I can't be of any help. The only machining we do is on a type of machine they don't make anymore I don't think. Vertical lathe made for doing driveshaft and flange work in WWII. Still going strong and does what we need for turning plate we but on the plasma table to manway flanges and pipe flanges up to 6' diameter quick and dirty.

is that the same thing as a turret lathe? That's probably porn for somebody here

No idea, not a machinest so have no idea with a turret lathe is. I'll take video if I think about next time I go in which doesn't happen all that often now. Anyway we have 2 of them that have always been termed "vertical" lathes. One has a table you put the part being machined on and it fits over the center spindle and the tool rotates around the spindle and moves in and out to machine the part flat like a flange. The other is the same thing excet the tool stays in the same spot but the part being machined rotates around it. Produces the same result. I don't do anything with them other than draw and cut the plates that will be machined. So 1/4" to 1/2" most times donut shaped. Round, with a hole in the middle. Just like a pipe flange which is what they are or a manway flange or door/window acess cover which is rectangular but some principle.

The guy who currently runs it (not a full time operation at the shop, just as needed) is a guy who is 22ish and I think worked at another machine shop, no real training other than what he picked up on the job. He has other duties most of the time like fitting. Might go two weeks making nothing on them, then have a day or two running them for an hour or two or all day.

CNC maching is pretty rare for the shops I've dealt with. I'm not sure but I think they are more used for repeating stuff multiple times. Most of our stuff is one off, short turnaround stuff. The machine shop that is local that is heavy into CNC they run their machines all day every day, which is pretty rare for the shops I deal with.

The only actual machining I've done is on a lathe I had before multiple moves and I got tired of moving it. A clausing and most of what I used it for was chambering a barrel, which if you have the right lathe and right tooling is pretty simple as far as maching goes.

Yeah, careful you'll get the "you did it must not be a big deal, now do mine FOR FREE" heh.

Lol, honestly I'd rather spend more and travel further to get something done well, esp if it's someone I "know". Even tangentially.

I know my school has a CNC router that could do the foam, in all likelihood. I don't remember if it takes straight G-Code or what.

No idea on that painting, though. That seems super specialized.

I can do single color 3d prints myself, and I've thought about getting some kind of CNC machine to do larger terrain models out of foam or wood, but it really doesn't do me much good unless I can get some kind of visual content in there as well. I've looked into Vacuum Molding, too, but I don't think that it would be efficient for what I'm trying to do. I'd still have to 3d print the mold and then print a texture map out on mylar and use that. I can get full color sandstone 3d prints from a company in Colorado, but they're expensive as hell. $400-$2,000 for a model less than 200mm x 200mm.

The CNC + Inkjet head in that video I linked above is like a wet dream for me right now. I want to be able to make tables and countertops for the vineyards around here by routing out the terrain of their site, then printing the vineyard block layout on top of it, and then finish with resin.

I don't have any of those examples uploaded, but here's a few that are relevant:

Smith Rock State Park Trails - 3D model by PBSusa (@PBSusa)

Here is a GPX file to 3D G-code creator
GPXtruder: Make 3D-printable elevation models of GPX tracks
You can load you GPX file of a walk or ride and then print it

These are 2 different rides to scale

kinda pointless but fun to see against each other.

Could you slice the 3D model in layers and have them cut on a router then glue them together?
Then some filler to get rid of the steps.

Ummm, paint be hand :D

Yeah i guess you are trying to do as little work as possible for the end result.

I had seen a video where the model was made in slices then a heap of people painted it, it was Nepal and the locals came in to do it.
Made for a really nice community project.

Shit, i just got time to watch the video, that 3D painter is awesome.

The lab at my school has done some relief maps with thin plywood. But they either laser-cut and etched layers individually, then stacked the layers, or they cut out each layer, painted each layer, and then stacked them.

I'm not sure if you could stack and glue umpteen layers of material that is already colored, and then just route that down, or not

What they did was something like this

048.jpg

So the blue was lasercut out, and then painted. The elevated land was laser etched and cut out, and stacked on top

I kicked around that idea as well, I just don't see as many opportunities to sell the result as with something full color, where I can overlay project plans or proposed designs.

I'd still pick up a laser cutter/engraver if I could find a decent one for cheap, though. Is it possible to do a gradiant/shading with those things?

Here's what i do.
Not my bike or Dyno cause you know, i don't want you to know my name haha
Full time i design and build Dynos, part time i build turbo kits for bikes and tune them, along with anything else that someone wants.
Hey @a_skeleton_03 , you told me about a motorcycle-related idea when we talked on the phone a few years ago. This fella designs dynos.

Did your idea ever go anywhere?

I use global mapper to convert my geotiff or landXML terrain files to STL, or meshmixer/meshlab to convert my 3d models to STL for printing, after adding wall thickness and a hollow base.

Here's a picture of one of my single-color prints off of my home 3d printer of a vineyard, and a color sandstone print of a landfill next to it -

This one is my favorite, though.

No really, my idea was on the gathering engine data side. There are a few projects out there that are similar and the cost to get it going was going to be huge so I put it on the backburner until someone else makes it or I get independently wealthy.

I'm not sure. I think some can, but I don't think the results are necessarily great

Go to 19:30 if you want to skip all the setup and just want to see how that machine cuts

That is one machine that scares the hell out of me, i hate them.

We had one at work years ago and i refused to use it.
