Would have thought at the beginning of the year DC would release their biggest financial failure of a comic book movie and yet it would do better than an MCU film? Crazy.

They will be lucky if it breaks 100MM.

270MM to make, another 100MM to advertise. 370MM. They need 740MM to break even. This film won't break 100MM, so they are on track to lose more than half a billion on it.

The really fucked up part of losing $600,000,000? Not a single person will lose their job over it.

You can't just completely ignore the international numbers like they don't exist. Chuk was factoring that in. Still, talking just in terms of theatrical returns, it probably is at least a $400m loss and maybe more.

i guess i dont understand, how do you lose more money than you invested in the movie? 370m, it makes 200-250m worldwide. split that in half and you have about 125m return on your 370m investment. how are you getting 500m loss?

Because the gross number is being reported, but the theaters are taking 50% of that, so for the movie to break even for Disney, he's doubling the total production+marketing budget.

The math is still wrong though, because they wouldn't be losing what they didn't invest, so chuk's right, they're only out the quarter of a billion, not half a billion.

Fucker's definitely gonna be right about his conclusion though, not a single person will lose their job. Disney is not in the profit business anymore, they're in the activism and social change business, so they still consider the movie a big win and they will absolutely double down on diversity for future projects.

thought studios get 40% domestic, 30% foreign and like 25% of china.

iirc, $270m budget, -$50m back from uk. then unknown for reshoots, $125m for marketing.

before covid, disney used its leverage to get a lot more out of theaters like larger percent and x weeks on large screens. locally marvels went from large screens to single closet screen this weekend.

Not to mention most reshoots are done quietly and don't get announced in trade publications unless they are massive in scope. Disney is notorious for testing endings and reshooting.

Chances are they are way over budget as usual for a Disney production, so add 40-50m to whatever they claim the budget is.

Supposedly Danvers and valkyrie hooked up in this movie and she was her love interest. But it got cut with a bunch of other stuff. Might as well have left it in. It couldn't have made this bomb any harder than it already has.

A lesbian scene caters to the "patriarchy" more than it does the gays. So, of course they cut it. We also already knew Danvers was a dyke. Rocket even pointed that out.

This is correct. Well the percentages vary based on the studio and the deals/contracts in place but at the very best, like pre-covid, studios only saw 50% of domestic BO. Nowadays the best you can hope for is maybe 40% of domestic. In some cases the domestic cut is even worse. This all came out of the disaster known as streaming where studios saw the Netflix money and figured they could cut the theater out of the loop and then after sinking billions into the money pit realized they still haven't turned a profit on streaming and the only thing they accomplished is they cut their own throat on home video sales (DVD/bluray, where a lot of profit came from later on in a films life cycle)

And when you say "studios" you mean the entire Hollywood apparatus, the actual studio, the production companies, director/actors with percentages, etc.

both of you guys math is wrong but chuk is accidently closer to correct. You cannot lose more money than you spent, but they sure as hell aren't keeping half of the BO. They spent probably 400 million dollars on this turd and will be lucky to make 70-75 mil off of it, losing about 1/3 a billion.

There are more factors involved, But I tried to just give a ballpark estimate. International bo brings you less than 50%. They got compensated for shooting in the UK. Stuff like that. Yes the movie cost 400m including production and marketing, but it will likely break 200m. So they will loose around 300m all said and done. It's a flop regardless.

So I haven't seen reviews on the forum really blasting the movie. From those that have seen it, is it worse than Thor 4, or Ant Man?

It's worse than Thor 4 but better than Ant man 3. But all 3 are fucking horrible.
