Keeping it short and cheeful is also definitely a strength. Works for what it is and for doing a Naked Gun movie without Nielson.

ALL of The Naked Gun movies are fucking great. The 1st one is definitely the best, but I don't understand anybody hating on the sequels. Hot Shots Part Deux got a lot of hate too, but I thought it was even better than the 1st one.

IMO, 1 > 3 > 2.

None are bad, but 2 definitely the weakest on account of getting a bit heavy-handed about environmentalism at times.

I don't hate the sequels but I think the unpredictability of the laughs and gags from the original really started to go missing. And how could they not its extremely hard to make comedy that way. This one I think had the advantage of a 30 year break so between lots of topical humor to mine from, Liam Neeson coming from a different acting background (action) then Nielson (drama) and a cultural shift, it felt fresher.

Yea no. This is so full of jokes, gags, and background shit that if you catch everything in your first viewing I'd be shocked.

Again humor is subjective but that's just flat not true

Fuck yeah! Hot shots part Deux, most kills in a movie ever! I saw both of them in the theater, and I even think a couple of the naked gun movies.

I go back and rewatch stuff like airplane, naked gun, scary movie, and any of that slapstick Zucker Brothers style of comedy. my wife apparently didn't watch any of that stuff when she was growing up, and I've tried to make her watch them, and for some reason it just doesn't click. I don't think she ever saw the police academy documentaries either.

I think it requires a certain level of superior intellect to enjoy that style of comedy.

That would be extremely worrying that a comedy like Naked Gun that's basically nonstop gags, would only have 2 minutes of jokes.

Weird Al did it first:

I mean it's definitely that Zucker Brothers style slapstick humor, and it's an amazing film.

I remember renting a UHF from the video store multiple times as a kid. He also had an anthology of his music videos from the '80s that my friends and I would rent and watch. I think we discovered weird Al when he did his smells like teen Spirit video, and one of those bought the album and would make copies on cassettes for everybody else.

I think someone mentioned it before, but Angie Tribeca (Rashida Jones) was very much a successor to the Naked Gun type of comedy. And that was mid to late 2010s I think.

Angie Tribeca was amazing. I need to rewatch that for sure. We just started rewatching Veep to have a background 30 min comedy. This’ll work well too.

I've been rewatching Veep this past week. It's way too accurate

Veep is fucking nuts after the Biden presidency. It was funny when it first aired. It was sad a decade later.

Veep and Idiocracy need to be granted their own special category of "Films and shows which STARTED as a comedy and BECAME documentaries"
