On a related note, I'm hearing more about the weird formations the pats have been using. Anyone got a link to something that discusses that intelligently? What they're doing, how it's working, what the rules say about it, etc? Not that I expect Bill to use the same tricks again, but it sounds interesting.

All it is was switching out skill position players (RB, WR, TE) to be ineligible receivers (like linemen) and then back to eligible, and hoping the defense didn't notice. It was complicated because you don't have to line up in the traditional formation of TGCGT for it to be a legal formation. So you can have a TGCG and then your right tackle lined up off the line of scrimmage, and your TE split way the fuck out, but on the line as ineligible. So effectively your TE is treated like a lineman. He just runs around behind the line of scrimmage so there's no ineligible man downfield penalty.

The next snap you hope the defense isn't paying attention and doesn't cover him.

So basic run of the mill trickery? Except that doesn't a player has to come out of the game for one play when going from ineligible to eligible.

Does he also run the swinging gate? Hey, this would be a good game for them to try the "Wrong Ball" play.
