I'm willing to accept the possibility that Nolan either was forced to cast Page/Lupita or decided to for woke cred, and then minimized their roles and made a great movie anyway. I'll wait and see, but Nolan has made great movies in the past. It's too bad we have to try to decipher if we're being hoodwinked into watching a DEI movie or not.
Nothing a little patience won't be able to clear up. The two DEI women are a huge red flag, but the online folks who were dogging the movie for that are also the types that will see it and own up if the movie is actually good.

It's the Oscar rules. You have to have the DEI bullshit in to even be considered.

the oscar rules thing isn't really a thing, it only applies for best picture (no other category) and more importantly there are 4 criteria and only 2 must be met. One is on screen 30% main/supporting must be gay as fuck, or two is 30% behind the camera. There are two quiet alternatives though which pretty much lets any big studio in - the studio must offer paid internships and support diversity programs for usual diversity crowd or marketing/sales at the studio must be gay/muslim as fuck.

I'm pretty sure Warner Bros already meets those two categories since just hiring white women counts as being diverse and most sales/marketing teams are stupid out of touch bitches so any movie with their name on it qualifies.

Rotten Tomatoes has been useful when critic score is too high (woke goy slop usually), too low (might be a fun movie), or when audience and critic scores diverge dramatically. Thats really the only barometer, sort of a reality check on obvious propaganda.

This ackshually shit keeps coming up about the rules.

Yeah, we know they can do the bare minimum. Do you really think doing the bare minimum to meet the rules gets you votes? Does that even make sense logically?

"Well I guess they met the offscreen requirements Jim, hell, now we gotta evaluate this one fairly with the other movies nominated. I'll let the boys know they have internship programs in bumfuckville and hired some 30% gay key grips behind the camera"

No.

You show inclusiveness with DEI in your main/support cast-- or you won't get the votes to win, and you won't be considered competitive. Period.

In what fucking Hollywood world would phoning in the bare minimum requirements for the Oscars be taken serious?

The rules were in place for Oppenheimer. Your argument has failed.

yeah was gonna say the rules first started in 2024 the year oppenheimer was nominated and won with zero non white people in the cast and just 2 women. just having some women in the cast is enough, and odyssey would have had enough between anne hathaway, charlize theron, mia goth, etc.

more and more i'm pretty sure nolan has a canny view of the political landscape and deliberately cast travis scott and lupita to get more attention on the movie.

There are going to be movies that are simply undeniable. It would have tarnished the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to not give Oppenheimer best picture.
So, in other words, what you said here:

Is incorrect.

Undeniable like Chicago over Gangs of New York? The members of the Academy are in it for life. The median age is in the mid-60s so they don't need help to shit themselves and don't care about diversity. I mean they don't even care about watching the movies they vote for!

2024 was a strange year for the awards with it being the first inauguration of the new 2/4 requirement.

There were all kinds of dust-ups and activism from all sides over them-- which makes it an exceptional year.

Once the rules settle expect movies that are putting in more effort to get stronger consideration

Such as the 2017 Moonlight win,

More effort pays, whether Oppenheimer won or not.

I just broke my streak of avoiding movie theaters since prior to Covid. Maybe I'll go for another six years starting now.

This was...largely good with some questionable choices, most not related to the casting. The mythical island encounters were generally well done and fun to see on screen, though they were heavily condensed to the point of feeling rushed. The decision to go with modern day dialog was a bold move but didn't really work. There were a few things things that were built up rather slowly and subtly and then paid off in rewarding fashion in the final act. Contrast against Abrams who turbocharges the build up but then either takes it nowhere or into a bunch of slapped-together bullshit. The main Trojan horse sequence was a highlight.

As far as the DEI checkboxes, Page's character is in no way a stand-in for or last-minute swap from Achilles. He doesn't fight at all, is immediately murdered at the beginning of the movie (before Troy is breached), and as far as I can recall from the poem, isn't given any of Achilles' dialogue during the encounter in Hades. Had I gone into this blind I wouldn't have had any clue who the actor was, nor cared. The Helen / Clytemnestra race-swap seemed utterly pointless and they surely overpaid for Lupita. She's effectively a glorified extra and if you stop to glance down at your phone a couple of times you could miss all of her dialog. Zendaya and her resting bitch-face don't have a lot to do either, certainly not enough to be worthy of either praise or derision.

Overall, an enthusiastic "fine".

you guys are forgetting a major plot point was Commie jews being maligned by evil white men. of course it got nods without black people.
I liked the part where Emily blunts character gets a girl power moment after being shown she's a coward and only like communism when it didn't impact her life.

I alluded to it but didn't want to get down in the weeds.

The activism of 2024 to get Jews included in the standard would have a direct impact for 2 reasons

1) many sympathetic voters in Hollywood

2) not just a few people complaining, but nearly 300 actors, writers, producers signed the letter

A biopic featuring 2 historically Jewish men would certainly get a boost that year.

That's where they look for the exceptions in order to elevate Oppenheimer, not reasons to disqualify it.

See Moonlight for example of what happens outside of a major Jewish activism year when they are just looking for DEI points.
