Hearing rumblings that an interstellar object (Atlas?) is on course to intercept Earth in 2027. Lot of folks think it's extraterrestrials. If it really is just a rock, it's got the potential to slam into Earth like a bullet. Hopefully it's a ship instead, full of peaceful creatures that just want to tell us all the secrets of the universe and the trick to immortality. Or we just get savagely dinosaur'd by Lavos. Who knows.

I never really bought that Oumuamua was just a rock, given the behavior it exhibited. I think most people were just programmed to think of it like a rock because every news article about it everywhere showed a CGI rendering of a long space rock at the top of the article, despite that we never actually saw it up close in any way.

3I/Atlas will be long gone by 2027. Hubbel looked at it and it's definitely an interstellar comet, probably on the order of 1-2km in diameter with a coma probably on the order of 10-20km in diameter.

I think Avi was just listing reasons why it’s important to study this object and this is just the media taking the most click-baity possibility from a list of things Avi said it could be and running with it for clicks. Not that I trust Avi or anything. Or it could just be that that pushing that part of the story benefits whoever is controlling the media.
