OK, so I'll preface by saying that I was an idiot in this story.
So I realized, at some point, that paying 30 bucks a month for a land line seems like an extravagant expense for something I rarely make practical use of and mostly use for receiving scam phone calls. After much time had passed, I had decided to act on this realization. The timing of the cancellation was a bit weird, to be fair. See, the last time my internet conked out it was because the phone line provider had fucked something up and they had to send someone to fix it. Anyway, the only reason I was able to get someone over to look at the problem at all was because the land line ALSO wasn't working, so I was able to deal directly with the phone line guys and not the internet guys. Oddly, this service-related problem happened AT THE SAME TIME that my ISP-provided modem also conked out. I was able to address this by being lucky enough to have a friend (Mire) who had a usable modem to lend me which ALMOST worked the moment I had internet re-set up (see, it turns out when he configured it he accidentally and coincidentally chose the exact same IP subnet for the router that my ISP had chosen for the modem, causing a rare conflict that required us to re-configure the modem, but I digress...).
So I felt all proud of myself and called to cancel my land line. I was very cordial about it. I even let the CSR go through her whole schpiel about if I knew what I was giving up or not. She mentioned how in the case of cell phone service interruption, I wouldn't be able to get in contact with anybody, yadda yadda yadda. I made it clear what I was willing to pay and she made it clear what they were willing to offer and there was no overlap. And it was fine.
Slowly, unnoticeably at first, my internet service got a little slower. This wasn't an uncommon occurrence. Mire had often suggested that I pay the extra 10 bucks a month and just get cable internet, that it was significantly faster and more consistently dependable than the error-ridden DSL shit I was using. I mean, I had just started paying by the YEAR for my internet service, that's how confident I was that I was happy with what I was paying. But then the slowdown became more noticeable, and eventually became an outright stop. I had no internet.
Coincidentally, the last time this had happened it was also on the weekend. This meant I couldn't contact the internet guys directly (they were closed on weekends, and the phone service person trying to convince me to keep my phone service was quick to interject how inconvenient that was when I mentioned that fact). But I had their email address, and I was hanging out at my friend's place so I decided I'd get the process started on fixing my internet. I emailed the last service guy that had been in contact with me to mention that I had lost service again. We had come to the conclusion that everything was OK on my end and everything was OK on their end so it had to be an issue with the phone line guys. They told me they had sent a ticket to the phone line guys to come check out the problem (for the third time).
After a couple of days, the phone line guy never even made contact. I called the internet guys to make sure everything was OK, and it turned out the reason I wasn't getting any internet was because I had CANCELED MY LAND LINE and not signed up for a DRY LOOP. Apparently the effect is not instantaneous (as it was for the phone line itself) but gradual. Surprise! Now, just because why not, signing up for a dry loop involved paying an installation fee of 50 bucks or so and an extra eight bucks a month. While that's certainly cheaper than the thirty bucks a month for a land line, it doesn't seem like a great deal compared to paying 10 bucks more a month and getting the far more reliable cable modem.
So, fuck it. I'll join the modern era and just fucking switch to cable modem. I'll never have to worry about disconnection or slowdown issues again, right? As an added bonus, Mire has a cable modem I can use that will save me 85$ since I don't need to buy one from my ISP! Sweet! It took a bit of effort, as the ISP guy who (correctly) assumed I didn't know what I was talking about explained how some modems that have already been linked to some account became unusable for new accounts or something... Anyways, I called back from my friend's house, my friend explained how the modem was from a competitor but the exact same model and an agreement was reached that this modem would work just fine. Unfortunately, the process could take from 10-12 business days, which is a long time to go without internet. At this point, what choice do I have, right?
So a couple of days pass and I don't hear anything from my ISP. I figure I wanna stay on top of shit and make sure the ball is rolling so I give them a call. Despite the fact that they had made no effort to contact me, it turned out my request for cable modem service was on hold. Why? Because I live in Quebec and the infrastructure guys won't even activate cable modem service at my location unless I buy a modem from my ISP (which they supply). Well, that fucking sucks, since I already have access to a modem that both sides have acknowledged WOULD WORK, but whatever. Capitalism, right? So I got no choice, I agree to buy a modem from my ISP and piss away 85 bucks.
...And a few days pass, and again I hear nothing from them. I'm only even able to check my email from work (which I will only be able to do for another few days), but I get nothing. So again I figure: I gotta stay on top of this shit. I'm calling them to make sure the ball is rolling. So I call them and... guess what? Have you guessed? For the first time in this CSR's relatively long history with the company, this is the first time she's ever seen them out of stock on the modem I need. She even called the stock department, who she was under the impression received new shipments 3 times a week, and was told there was no current ETA. They don't even KNOW when they're going to have more modems.
FFS. Here I am, in full "take my money!" mode and they can't even give me internet with an existing and functioning infrastructure and a perfectly capable modem... My life is a fucking carnival.
