Tool might eventually release a new album someday

When someone says "songwriting" I take that to encapsulate the entire composition of the song, not just the lyrics.

Also, the song you cited as an example, there is more going on with the vocals/lyrics of that song in particular than just the words. Might change your opinion on calling it "mediocre" might not. /shrug

If you think that is an example of mediocresonglyric writing, what would you consider an example of excellent lyric writing (just curious)?

Well first off, just because something is more complex doesn't mean it's any better/worse. Secondly, what I meant was can you honestly remember more than a couple guitar rhythm's from Lateralus? Aenima has an amazing guitar hook in virtually every song. So yes, Lateralus sounds very mediocre when compared to Aenima.

So the one riff that makes up the entirety of 46 & 2 makes it a better song than anything on Lateralus simply because its more memorable?

This discussion is going to turn into a shit storm real fast. We should all just agree to disagree right now.

I must be the only person here that thoroughly liked 10,000 days. From start to finish, I enjoyed every song on the album and thought a few of them like Jambi and Rosetta Stoned were some of the best songs they have done period, on any album.
I don't know if I feel that positive about it, but yeah, I thought 10,000 Days was pretty solid from start to finish. Better than Lateralus, but behind their other releases. Rosetta Stoned is awesome on a number of levels. Every time I hear it now I have a huge smile on my face, because I find it incredibly amusing that such a serious sounding song is actually such a big joke lyrically. But that's what got me about Tool when I first heard them when I was 13: Disgustipated. The cries of the carrots!

I love 10,000 days. Not sure why people are so critical of it. Rosetta Stoned, Vicarious, Right in Two, Viginti Trees, Wings for Marie, 10,000 days. Sheeeit love pretty much every song on that album.

Tool's Undertow and Aenima are 2 of my Top 10 all time albums. Possibly Top 5. Such amazingness.

A Perfect Circle's first album was great too.

I'll give this a listen but Maynard's definitely moved on from the industrial post hardcore so I can't say I'd be a giant fan of his new stuff, but I'm still giving him my money purely on respect 20 years later.

Lateralus is one of their best albums with the title track possibly being the best song on the album. It's all pretty damn good.

Nothing like rocking out to 'The Pot' either.

Why do Tool fans take any negative said about Tool so personal?
Do you understand why people cringe at putting ketchup on a burnt steak? Some people are so ignorant about music that their opinions are offensive, and other people are hypersensitive and easily offended.

I don't know, if the steak is burnt/ruined (MW+) and you're still going to bother eating it, you might as well drench it in ketchup or A1. I'm not sure how that analogy really holds up regarding music. If you like dubstep you might as well blow a tranny while you're at it?

Puscifer wasn't aimed at me, but I appreciate what Maynard was trying to do. Tool/APC (effectively the same in my head, thanks Maynard's vocals) are two of my favorite bands, and I am eagerly awaiting more. Even if it might be a rehash of a now bygone era... I would welcome a brief return to that era.

Because the retard that started this flame fest (which attracted a_skeleton_03 to troll like a fly to shit) stated his opinion as an objective reality. He doesn't like Lateralus personally? Fine. However he doesn't get to say "they tried to hide mediocre song writing by having longer songs" and not qualify that with "in my opinion" and not expect some blowback. I would say the same thing for someone hating on Bieber or some such. It's ... all ... opinion.

PS. @ a_skeleton_03 .. go read up on the Fibonacci sequence and then re-read the lyrics to Lateralus.

Fine. If blowing trannies is a thing that's easier for you to relate to than cooking steaks, I'll try an analogy that's hopefully easier for you to swallow. Rezz's Tool/APC comparison looks like an appropriate example too. So here goes...

Rezz's comment equating Tool to APC can pretty easily be interpreted as extreme musical ignorance (or apathy? either one works). In this case, the comparison between the two bands is tantamount to saying "I don't even care whether the tranny I'm banging is pre or post op. As long as he's got a big 'ol pair of titties and a hairy ass crack, I'm going to town." Fortunately, Rezz clearly stated his opinion in the form of an opinion, so the only people that are going to take his comparison personally are basically mongoloids anyway. More reasonable people are going to accept Rezz's opinion for what it is, and then never ever ask him for advice about strip clubs and escort services.
