question -- for how many of you is this the first new album you listened to this year?

Not even close. Black Keys, Whitney, Big Wreck, Junius Meyvant, Raconteurs, Aristocrats, The Heavy, Ghosts of the Forest, White Denim, Snarky Puppy, Dream Theater. Probably missing some. Some really good new stuff this year.

Fripp was so boss.

i wanted to be all like "what do you mean WAS?" and come in hot with a fresh YouTube link of one of their metal jammers from their most recent tour (this year), but Fripp locks up his intellectual property TIGHT, PERSONALLY roaming the internet to find and shut down illegal uploads of his music. he even found the albums uploaded to PornHub.

so the best i have is this link to their official site, a download of the song "Larks' Tongues in Aspic, Part Five," recorded live in Tokyo in 2018, originally recorded for their 2003 album The Power to Believe. they've been rocking non stop for a long time, at few points in history has it ever been a "was" haha :D

i apologize that you have to make an account to download it, but the download is free. promise that it rocks harder than a lot of stuff these days, despite being played by a dude who turned 73 this year :D

you guys that actually have listened to a bunch need to stop showing off, or the ones that haven't listened to a new album since 2013 are going to be too embarrassed to out themselves. i knew you'd be good Alex haha :D

Looking forward to: Pixies, Blink-182

Need to get: Raconteurs

Sat down on my balcony last night with a cup of coffee and a joint. Put on my good headphones on and gave the album a listen for the fourth or fifth time. Just closed my eyes and really listened and spent a lot of time trying to count out drum rhythms and stuff. Man the album rocked me the way tool used to when I was in high school. It bums me out to read all you guys not enjoying the album so much. But the more I listen the more I’m digging it. If I listen to it casually it doesn’t grab me. But when I give myself the time to really dive into it...totally different experience.

Admittedly played it through in the background, I'm sure other people here did the same thing.

Everyone should probably give it a fair spin.

I have been completely enthralled with Invincible.

The lyrics, the progression, all of it.

I'm getting older and mortality becomes an issue more and more every day, whether my own or of my idols. And this song is just speaking to me.

Weapon out and belly in!

Not going to give it full play-through again. Targeting specific tracks people mentioned here is a better approach for me I decided

People are not wrong to be critical but I’d say as of this very second:

Invincible
7empest
Pneuma
FI
Descending
Culling Voices
Chocolate Chip Trip (which is just a drum solo)

Not even close. I’ve probably listened to 100 new 2019 albums this year and probably 200 older years that were new to me. I listen to SMOD and a couple other channels on YouTube on a weekly basis. When I hear one I really like I find all their previous albums which is usually anywhere from 1-5 previous albums I’ve never heard. I do this to a lesser extent with other genres, metal, electronic. I can listen to music on my nice Bose headphones at work so I’m constantly hearing new stuff.

Yeah I'm sure there's a bunch of us that haven't listened to anything else new this year, but all you guys showing off have now scared them away from admitting it :p

That’s crazy to me. I constantly need new stuff, although I can listen to old stuff, and listen to some albums over and over but I always need more new. I am the same way with some hobby stuff I do, video games, board games. I’m guessing it’s some kind of mental issue but I’ve never tried to look into it. I don’t want to self diagnose as autistic or something. I don’t have any social issues, so maybe it’s just I get bored easy, idk.

There are some people here that also haven't played a new MMORPG since WoW so :) remember the audience haha

I'm always going through phases with new material. At least new material as it pertains to me. For example a couple years ago I dove really hard into Elton John's catalog and Steely Dan's catalog a year before that. Tons of stuff my parents never introduced me to that I've discovered over the years. I should be more into what's going on now - as in 2019. It's just when I get into something I get into it pretty hard and will continually listen to it for a month or so.

Thankfully I'm part of another online community that's music-focused and at the end of the year there's always a Best of 20XX thread where I find a ton of goodies.

This carries over into some every day shit too, like, new flavor of M&M's that doesn't even sound good? Must buy.

I remember hearing somewhere about the big three words that drive marketing: new, free, sex. Apparently most people are keyed into one of the three and mine would definitely be 'new'.

Back when I was first getting into warez, I would download anything and everything just to try it, even if it was just for a few minutes to figure out it was garbage. I think I was always looking for that holy grail/hidden gem. I feel like I've toned it down quite a bit but I also think that's because I've discovered that most 'new' things now are just a rehash of the old things I've already tried.

Sorry for the derail but it really hit close to home for me. I hope Maynard writes a song about it.

Haha, exactly me. I bought those horrible sounding jalapeño M&Ms over the summer. I even said “wow these sound bad” as I grabbed them.

Turns out they were not bad.

I hate Tool but I like King Crimson and certain prog bands. I listen to new music all the time but most of it is jazz, folk and experimental music.

I like Vashti Bunyan, Jose Gonzalez and A Wall Becomes A Bridge.
