What doesTomorrow Landhave to do with Tron? Tron: Legacy actually had pretty decent box office numbers I thought?
They are run by the same studio.... Disney doesn't want to risk anything that isn't 100% going to generate them a lot of money now.

The decision comes following the lackluster performance of Brad Bird's Tomorrowland, which was budgeted at $190 million and opened to a meager $33 million last weekend. Add to that the recent disappointments such as The Lone Ranger and John Carter and Disney has struggled with big budget blockbusters as of late... at least those that weren't already established properties (i.e. Marvel) and/or live action fairy tale adaptations.

It is, but not a major one. They tried to keep the IP alive between films by creating the Tron cartoon, but the cartoon failed to find an audience. With the Marvel and Starwars stuff being "guaranteed winners" cash wise, they have little incentive to spend large $$$$$$$ for less than guaranteed returns.

Anybody with a brain could have told them Tomorrowland, Long Ranger, and John Carter would all bomb. If the trailers make your movie look terrible, it is beyond saving.

Technically Carter didn't bomb, it made a 40 million dollar profit after the 280 million budget/marketing craziness.

Lindelof wasn't the problem with the opening weekend numbers. Somebody in charge at Disney doesn't know how to market unproven IPs. Even if you are going to create a more thought driven kid's action movie, you've got to promote it like slam jam thank you ma'am blockbuster if you want little butts in the seats.

The last burst of trailers for Tomorrowland looked too violent for a kid's movie.

Disney sees the genre fatigue with Star Wars and Marvel clogging the market for the next couple decades. They're seeing gaps in their lineup and that's why they got Brad Bird--one of their big guns---to try to build a franchise for the female YA hunger games/divergent/twihard crowd.

They won't give up on that space though. They know the kid's segment is basically just Frozenstan now, and Marvel+Starwars is a goliath, so it just puts those gaps into relief for them.

It wasn't even PG 13. It was PG.
PG/13 = PG or PG-13

What khorum said. Apparently some Disney exec said they were trying to find a spot for it in the next 5 years lineup and couldn't. Now that could be complete bullshit but it was the reason given.

"Now we can either try to make another Tron sequel which may or may not make much money, or we can make wall to wall Marvel and Star Wars films and build Scrooge McDuck's moneybin IRL"
