I bought Valheim maybe 6 months ago, and returned it before the 2 hours was up. I absolutely hated the building system and how fucking retarded it felt trying to do it in third person like that. Maybe I missed something, but despite trying everything I could think of I just hated the building, and since that's one of the things I enjoy in these games, it wasn't for me.

Did I miss something, or has it been improved since then?

Yeah, I've never understood the people who jizz over Valheim. Sure, it added some things to help move the genre forward in some ways, but it always felt very "meh" to me.

There are much better survival games out there. And even something as shitty as ARK, I've put a ton more time into.

I played a bit this morning and yea it is very goofy. Made me miss my drone from Empyrion.

I do like the feels of the game but ugh the women are just not right. It is a mark of the greatness of a race of man the gulf between the sexes. The nords have the highest with strong tall powerful men and glorious maidens that look straight out of heaven, a mark of their elven ancestry.

The women in this game just look like a man with a bit of cloth over the chest.

What exactly did you hate? In the first two hours of the game, you're going to be very limited in what you can do in terms of materials and size. It's not until after you break into the second biome that you unlock some materials that allow you to build longer and higher spans. Also, if you have not gotten a hoe and used it to flatten the ground first, building anything of any size is going to be frustrating. Frequently, we'll just repair an existing hut or barn and squat there until we have a good spot identified and maybe even tier 2 materials.

People build some amazing stuff but I seldom have the patience for gathering the materials required to do grand works of art. I am more about efficient functionality over aesthetics. One exception to that was Windrose. It was a real pleasure building in that game; it didn't feel like as much of a chore getting the materials to do some really cool shit.

Did they up the size of the starting island? It's so massive, not even partly explored it. Has a massive mountain biome on it as well which I got a map icon on that I haven't seen before. Thought I got lucky with the trader, but that's not it. Can't explore there, die to frost and I heard wolves so I ran. Still on bronze, but fairly decked out in it now, so guess it's time for boating.

Yeah, it's funny how certain games just click for a person sometimes and not another. On paper, ARK sounds like a game I should love but I have tried to start it a few times and just could not get into it. I would probably continue to give it a try every now and then if the download size were not stupidly huge.

Game plays like dogshit on controller. Dunno which you used, but might be worth a shot with mvk if you have any inclination.

It wasn't the materials or the items I had available, it was the mechanics of building itself. It has been a while so I'm probably not remembering exactly, but I couldn't reliably align a fucking wall where I wanted it, or my character was in the way or at a weird angle to it, or I couldn't get one thing to place on top of another, etc. I mean, I'm not totally retarded so I could do all of that eventually, but it took way more effort than any other base building game I've ever played, and that's a big negative for me.

I've played plenty of these games, with Abiotic Factor being my favorite. Currently finishing up PalWorld, beat the end boss but now just fucking around making a new base, breeding pals, etc. Played Grounded before that, tons of Minecraft, all the typical Sons of the Forest, Ark, Rust, Conan, etc. Conan even feels a little similar in terms of building, but none of them are as difficult for me to build in as Valheim.

PC master race, unless it is a Vampire Survivors type of game I typically always play mouse & keyboard.

Yeah, I also agree that Valheims camera is fucking wonky and makes building harder than it has to be.

I still maintain that Enshrouded has the best building system of them all.

I've been considering what to play next. Maybe I'll give Enshrouded a shot, but I worry that it is a lot more combat focused than I enjoy. I never finished Grounded because I got tired of fighting to get what I need all the time. Still, it looks pretty cool in terms of building, I'll agree.

Yeah I got suckered in my buying it from some of my friends and I played it one evening with them, I never touched it again. These types of games just aren't my jam.
