My sister has a PhD in psychology, and she's already treating men with porn addictions. After she tried out the VR today, and I informed her on teledildonics, she thanked me, so that she'll know what she'll be treating. She expects they'll be lined up for help on VR porn addictions.

They should do less hedging on pricing expectations and just release the price.

I'm expecting around 400, including the xbox controller. Hopefully they'll offer a package without the controller so people that already own one can knock the price down a bit more.

No way. The right play is to announce preorder dates + footage + demoes of the VR games they've got to drown out the reaction to the price and control the narrative.

I think they'll do that at CES and open preorders during CES.

I'm expecting $450.

My bet is $399 but personally would happily pay $999 for the thing, just release it already.

I'm OK with the price, but I'm not sure my ASUS G73 can handle it. What if you don't meet the specs they are talking about? Is there a way to turn down the graphics to have less lag? I'm not buying another PC just for VR.

It's likely that every game will have graphics settings and many games won't be terribly demanding. However there will be a good amount of games that only work on a NVIDIA GTX970 (what OVR said is the recommended minimum) at minimum settings.

In other words, you might be able to play 90% of the VR games and experiences, but won't be able to play EVE Valkyrie, the Crytek game etc.

Any good links on that? I don't want to drop $450 on a Rift just to find I can't play the best games.

After doing my research, I can expect 50 FPS on my laptop, and that's not fast enough.

So Rift will essentially 'replace' your entire monitor setup for full VR games, right? Doesn't seem bad at under $500 then, besides the early adopter penalty of it being more expensive/no content/frustrating to use/etc.

Buying it now definitely seems like buying a Nintendo system for 3rd party games. Hopefully it is easy for developers to support it w/o much added cost. No chance I would even buy one without a real life demo I can test out just to know I won't puke.

Not sure what you mean by replace, but while you wear the rift you'll be incapable of using your monitors.

There are also a variety of desktop apps that are pretty cool but more focused on allowing you to limp along with your desktop to run the next VR game without having to take the rift off your head rather than improving your desktop experience. As the resolution of VR improves this will no longer be true. I'm on a six monitor setup right now (3 stacked on 3 monitors) and it will pale in comparison to the kind of shit I'd pull if I had 8k VR.

My guess is that OVR will have a validation process before they will sell something on their store or give it the OVR seal of approval. That validation process will involve running it on one of those machines at some detail setting and testing whether it maintains a solid 90fps.

But your random configuration beneath that? Who knows. I recommend you get a new PC when you get a new VR system.

I am the most motion sick person you ever met. I can't play shooting games, and as a kid, used to puke at the amusement park. I can't be on a boat, or I hurl. Every time I tried VR before this, I got pukey.

I don't get sick with the Samsung VR much. As it has been said before, games where you driving something (spaceship or car) don't give much motion sickness. The only type of game that makes me sick are the ones where you walk in first person. Dread Halls made me insanely sick. I had to lay down on the floor after five minutes of that.

As time goes on, I seem to have gotten my "sea legs" and the motion sickness I had is mostly gone. Somethings set it off, and you learn with time what does. On Milk VR, the snowboarding demo is puke city. Also, I did a Blue Angels demo that was fine until they started doing barrel rolls.

I believe that Best Buy has Samsung reps who can demo it for you. You just have to know when they are in the store.

Wow, they haven't identified the right systems yet, and pre-order is opening up? If people get sick from judder on their lower end systems, because they don't have the right PC and didn't wait, that won't be good for VR.

Yep. That's a serious problem, as is people misconfiguring their systems and devs making bad software for it.

It's like people saying that cookies are terrible because they put in one tbsp of salt instead of one tsp, or some dunderhead made a cookie recipe that forgot sugar.

That's probably why I go to the Rift site to look at Rift ready PC's, and nothing is finalized. I thought I was past being an early adopter. The guys at the tip of the spear are the ones getting screwed.
