There's basically four big VR systems that are either out or coming out:

Gear VR: for your phone, not a direct competitor to the Rift. It's out and pretty good for what it is.

PSVR: For the PS4, not a direct competitor to the Rift. It's not out yet. I expect it to be good, but without a community of people developing and porting content to it I don't know how much content there will be for it.

HTC/Valve's VIVE: For the PC. A direct competitor to the Rift. In terms of functionality it is almost identical to the Rift. The biggest difference is they are targeting standing/walking experiences, but can also do seated experiences. It's out sometime this year (probably summer).

Oculus Rift Consumer Version 1 (What is going for sale tomorrow).

If you only want to deal with one system my recommendation is to wait until the VIVE releases. I think the Rift will be better for me due to more content and community support, but if you really like standing/walking experiences the VIVE may be better for you.

I thought they were going to have walking for the Rift? Maybe I'm wrong. Please tell me that they'll have the same standard (Rift and VIVE) for specs on the PC.

The Rift sensors supports walking around, the only real catch is the wires running from your head unit to the PC. With some massive extension cables and a few sensors to cover an area I don't see why you couldn't wander around wearing a Rift. I don't know what the Vive is doing that's different.

i've tried out all the versions and will be at ces to try out the finals, but my experience was the vive was WAY more comfortable than the oculus. might be a head size thing or whatever but it felt a bit less forward heavy too

my pc isn't good enough for either though, kinda sucks. if i upgrade to a 980 ti i'd be fine, so basically $450+whatever.

Guy at work might sell me his DK2 for $200, fair price right? Not that much change in the CV1?
Hard to say without actually having tested a CV. The claims I've seen from people on Reddit who have had the chance to use it say that it is as big a jump between the CV/DK2 as it was from DK1/DK2.

$200 sounds like a great deal as far as collecting it to say you have one, someday may be worth something maybe. Don't buy it thinking you are going to get good performance out of it compared to either of the release sets though, I've had mine put away for a while.

I wonder if Sony and Facebook just played chicken over pricing announcements, nothing from Sony at their CES presser that ended a bit ago. Just over 12 hours to preorder, time to let the cat out of the bag.

I'm afraid of getting betamaxed. I'm gonna wait to see what gets the most backing from the porn industry and go with that.

What killer app is driving you guys to order this?
Eve Online, that comes free with it. And I have a Samsung VR, which can be incredible, off of a cell phone. I'm anxious to see what unlimited HD space and more computing power can do.
