Column may be right, it may take 5-10 years for the technology to mature enough for it to be as widely accepted (reduced price, PCs capable of powering the tech) like how cell phones have evolved to today. Hopefully its toward the 5 year estimate (a few generations). There are areas where VR can be improved performance wise, like Tuco mentioned foveated rendering would improve performance for lower-end systems to run at higher refresh rates. Supposedly this tech should be in version 2.

Cool video. I havent seen anything about cv2 having foveated rendering. I think we will need it just to keep pace witb the resolution arms race that will happen.

This is making me reconsider my preorder. Something like that could change VR entirely. I don't want to have a massively outdated piece of tech the moment it hits the market.

I wouldn't worry about it. I think CV2 will release 2-3 years from now and feature:

1. 4k resolution.
2. Improved optics.
3. Improved input device.
4. A bunch of random shit that we learn is bad about the CV1.

I expect that CV3 will release 4-6 years from now and feature:
1. 8k resolution
2. Foveated rendering.
3. A bunch of random shit that we learn is bad about the CV2.

the full immersion sweet spot of VR is 16k panels, with eye tracking and focused rendering. So yeah, we are years away from that.
AMD Determines That Absolute Immersion In VR Requires 128 Megapixel Display

Some rumors have started to float around on prices too, with Sony's Morpheus looking like its gonna come in at $499. The Vive rumors are a bit more out there, with one taiwanese site saying $1499 (LOL) but that seems insane. Sony release seems to be June, probably have a big final announcement at E3 with "shipping next week" kinda thing.

There are lots of bad rumors coming out about the VIVE, both in terms of production issues, delays and costs. I'll take it all with a grain of salt though.

The Morpheus being $500 is pretty good. I think Sony is pretty ballsy spending the effort they have into making a great VR product at a great price before there is a real VR market. They'll be limited by a system that wasn't specifically built for VR and won't be as powerful as the Rift's GTX970 or better systems, but I think the static state of the system will allow developers to build high-value experiences that will be much easier to use.

Exciting stuff.

Oh and the other big things on the road map include body tracking. This is a pretty old and well-funded field so I don't know what they plan on doing to get high fidelity body tracking without

I got a google cardboard to go with my nexus 5 and tried a few things, overall it is neat but without some sort of idea of a killer app or some great porn it is kinda a meh thing. Are there any great apps or porn that is just must see that would work with Cardboard?

If I'm reading that chart right then that cost is only the goggles. Once you factor in the Vive controllers and sensors I doubt they'll be able to hit the 500 dollar mark unless HTC or Valve subsidize the shit out of it.

I think people are holding VR to an unreasonably high standard. All technology needs time to mature and ultimately hit an optimal level. People should be happy we get to experience this platform now, rather than waiting "5 - 10 years" for something mindblowing. Its a process like anything else. How bad was the PS3 launch not only in terms of software available but supply shortages? It recovered and became a great console experience, and now the ps4 is selling like crazy.

Remember Sega CD? I do. I was so amazed at FMV at the time, even though games like Night Trap etc were garbage, at that time it was new and interesting.

We are at the same place with VR. No one is forcing consumers to pony up 600 plus dollars for an experience you dont deem worthy. But some people like to get to the party early so to speak, opting to fimiliarize themselves and be willing to deal with the fact that things probably wont start getting interesting till later.

Obviously the VR market will have some struggles and have to overcome hardware issues and lack of quality/immersive/replayable content out the gate, but that doesnt mean we should all just say "ill come back in 10 years when VR is wholly immersive and has 1000 awesome games/apps there for consumption."
