There's another thread in the technology forum for older topics but if we wanna talk about VR gaming specifically can do it here
Virtual Reality

All three products now are priced with release dates. Oculus Rift is $599, shipments start end of the month with new orders for July. HTC Vive is $799 with shipments in April. Playstation VR got announced today, $399 but need seperate camera/move controller

HTC Vive:

I'm kinda excited but have a feeling some of this is gonna be like Kinect or Wii motion too - fun for a while, then kinda set it aside and not really use it anymore.

I've already preordered the Oculus Rift, passed on the Vive since it is $200 more, currently not as compatible with as many games as Rift, and is optimized for full room play (moving around) and the touch controllers instead of sitting down with a gamepad.

Playstation VR isn't up for preorder yet but should go up in the next 24 hours at amazon, gamestop, best buy, etc

Don't yet see really a killer game that makes me want VR RIGHT NOW - Elite Dangerous should be cool, and I think No Mans Sky will have VR support on PS4. Any other killer games you know about? The games that come with the HTC Vive sound terrible.

Also EA announced a Star Wars Battlefront "experience" exclusive to PSVR, not sure if its a DLC to Battlefront or a seperate game or what. Doesn't sound like a standalone game.

Playstation VR also comes with a seperate processor unit, not sure whats in it but assume some tech to help with the rendering load and splitting up the displays.

I was kinda hoping Sony would be like 'surprise, we're also supporting the SteamVR platform' and make it more than a $550+ PS4 accessory.

Sortof. The processor unit does *not* do anything additional to help the PS4 render pixels. So the PS4 itself still has to do all the heavy lifting. However, modern VR relies on a few pixel shaders to distort the image so that when it goes through the lens in the unit it looks normal. That kind of stuff is what the extra unit is likely doing.

Probably a very limited supply of standalones too after release too, to ensure more of the sure more profitable $499 bundles are sold.

I've already got a Vive and Oculus both coming, and I don't even own a PS4, only a PS3 but I'm surprised how good the Sony headset and software look. I really hope the best for them and I hope they sell a ton of units and people don't get violently ill playing this stuff. A good launch for everybody will be good for all of us in the future.

What are the chances of PC drivers for playstation VR? Is it even going to be possible?

Steam client beta updated today:

Added new Desktop Game Theater support, run any of your normal desktop games and have them appear on a giant virtual screen in your headset. Any game that supports Steam Broadcast should work with this feature, some tuning of the games graphical settings may be required for the best experience. This feature is currently in beta and can be accessed by adding "-vr2dgames" the command line when launching Steam.

My HOTAS came in the mail this week so I built a test rig to mount it to. This was a proof of concept only to make sure the measurements would work. The real thing will be made of plywood with a kreg jig and obviously be wider so it is stable. I think it is going to work out pretty well. What I didn't want was to permanently mount it to the driving cockpit that I built, I only want it there if I'm playing Eve Valkyrie or some other flight game.
