Welp, I wanted to do another run through with this new exp pack but now im hearing there is a huge 1.5 patch coming up this fall that basically redoes all the balance so the game is not faceroll easy. So I guess im waiting for that to hit now, lol. I was just about to fire this up this weekend too.

Started it when it first came out, but something else came up, so shelved it. Then DLC that was incorporated into the game was announced, waited for that, then a supposed patch, waited for that, then new dlc with added stuff, waited for that. Then this 1.5.... might as well wait for that too, but wouldn't be surprised if that turns into a "oops, we overtuned the balance a bit too much the other way, fix in 1.6 coming around winter!"

Rolled credits, fucking finally. Long ass game is long. Was gonna roll a new character but saw two more DLCs are coming with the season 2 pass so gonna wait.

The second to last bolter you get is insane on argenta, the aoe explosions on top of the burst fire damage I damn near killed the boss in a single round.

yeah, I've talked about the dlc, patch, preorder problem here, and in Owlcats forums..

Owlcat themselves have talked about the things they learned from WotR''s dlc. wh ich sold, which reviewed well, etc. and sadly, its alot of the wrong lessons as far as I can tell.
this is even extended with the great reviews of Void shadows. which is blends into the core game so well. cool!

except.. why would want to buy the game at release? why would I preorder? patches and core DLC both dramatically favor me NOT buying your game for 1-2 years, until its finally finished, and I get experience the whole game. every timey ou announce a DLC, every time you announce an upcoming patch. "I guess I'll wait, and I'll tell all my friends to wait a bit longer"

sales obviously also play into this as well. there is zero incentive for me as a consumer.
this is REALLY bad for the developer.

its a real shame WotR's dlc through the ashes, and lord of nothing did so poorly. as those Side campaigns unaffiliated with the core campaign,, are 100% the correct way to do dlc.
they really need to go back to old school, expac style dlc. where they added new campaigns, that came with new classes, etc, but didn't directly make the main campaign incomplete without them.

I do suspect this is exactly what Dark Heresy is. its almost certainly just RT engine, etc, with minor asset upgrades.

Doing what I do for all their games: Normal run at release, Hard run after a few expansions, Core run after last expansion. The extra encounters, xp, and gear usually makes harder difficulties way more doable. Also the build guides have long been perfected.

Yet to try Unfair but doesn't look fun. :D

Waht would help is a more non linear story with a more open ended world with some choices that change shit up. Would make replays more interesting.

There is only one story DLC left and its a ways out. Probably worth doing a seperate heretic run for that one, if you have not already gone down that road.

I actually got into the quest line of the arbites DLC and it is short but solid. It lacks the depth and full story integration of Void Shadows, but the fights are less overtuned than the later Void Shadows encounters. The biggest game breaking things are their implementation of shields. It is frankly too powerful as a mechanic to be as freely accessible as it is. If you thought Abelard was tanky before, he is basically immortal with any of the better shields equipped. Literally any character not a psyker has one on my team and its ludicrous how much stronger they are at ignoring damage. Sadly this puts the Space Wolf guy (who cannot use one) even further behind the normies than he was before. And it gets worse as you go into the endgame.

Overseer is an archtype that started out very strong, but once you get into the endgame it peters out fairly fast, with a couple exceptions. If you are playing a skill monkey support character, the servo skull is great for certain things (usually granting an autosuccess for certain tests or alternative ways to achieve goals) AND ITS ae mini heal is continuously useful. The psyker bird is usefull as another source of buffs and minor damage, but becomes a bit cumbersome for action economy reasons and you will struggle even keeping it alive in most situations. The cyber eagle is shit from start to finish. The Mastiff's main issues are requiring an arbites background (so main character or the DLC companion only) and its damage tapering way off mid to late game, while also getting ganked by the AEs the later bosses toss around. You also cannot reposition the pets, so there will be crucial fights where the computer will put them in a spot you really want another companion sitting in.

The other concern I have is that with the DLC shoe horned into the main story, it presents other pacing and challenge issues. Pacing wise, the temptation will be there to rush through Void Shadows, but the end fights of that DLC are so brokenly overtuned (especially at anything higher than normal difficulty) that you can wind up locking yourself into an unwinnable state. The last sequence is locked in and lengthy, plus it can occur as early as when you are in your first archtype if you rush the plot. This puts you into a locked set of encounters that are impossible to win without reducing the difficulty. On the other hand, if you are careful and wait to trigger the final bit until late in Chapter 2 while meticulously doing every other questline you can, you will be halfway through Exemplar archtype before you set foot in Commoragh which pretty much makes the rest of the game a complete joke until the very end.

Overall, the game is still very enjoyable particularly if you are a fan of the source material for the story aspect. Its easy to overlook the warts of balance issues in this one, especially after the ridiculous power creep that was WOTR. If nothing else, the story is decent and if you want you can play to your speed. My way of keeping things sane is to play at lower difficulty but avoid using psyckers as much as possible and avoid the Blood Web NPC when feasible. Cassie just flat out breaks the game and having her paired with a well designed psyker main character makes the whole thing silly. I really wish the end game were not designed around that level of cheesing, frankly.

Cool, yeah plan is Heretical run with a bunch of psykers and the xenos I killed off first run.
Hard not to aoe blast 4-6 times a turn across half the battlefield hitting for double everyone else with Cassia but you could just not use her…

Amazing. Space Wolves are one of the more prolific shield users among Space Marine chapters, they even had them as an option on their dreadnoughts at once point (maybe still do) which I don't think I ever saw on any other chapter.

Yeah they did the space marines dirty in this game, slowest, dumbest, and near weakest character in the game. All while taking up 4 squares severely limiting movement.

The only thing he has going for him is his higher base HP, but he can't take hits in the end game encounters as well as the real tanks (or dodge masters) can, so it does not matter. As a 40k player, I hated the Cheese Wolves but I actually feel bad for the NPC in this game for being so weak. Like you can actually take off the rack Jae and make a more survivable character.

I think the problem with Ulfar is that he's actually a well balanced character in a game specifically known for it's wild balancing issues.
