Started the game, got to the first fanatic vs heresy vs iconoclast decision point

i hate all these profile pics. I'm thinking of AI generating my own, lol. I'm playing as a jedi build. Not sure if i want to do light or sith.

It's funny watching the melee companion eviscerate streams of mobs while the battle sister pew pews for like 2 damage and then has to rest up. Don't mistake this observation as a request for help to play the game, i want to enjoy being clueless.
Hah. Yeah in my current run Argenta clears entire rooms before they get a turn. :D

The difference in this game between "optimized" and "average" builds is way more than Kingmaker or WOTR.

Yeah I'm going in blind but I can already tell from the first talent selection that there is a lot of synergy available.

I just did the mid-flight mini-quest to quell the unrest in the lower parts of the ship. In most RPGs with these types with three options of "retarded lenient" vs "retarded strict" vs "sensible middle ground" the sensible middle ground is the obvious choice and always yields the best rewards. It's what I chose in this run but I know next month I'm going to wake up with an archenemy dildo up my ass placed there by the worker I was kind to. I love it.

I went full Dogmatic for my first run. If I play again I'll go heresy. The extremes are fun in this. I'm a zealot at this point. Even the crazy religious zealots tell me I'm good to go.

I started this when it came out, and I loved the story but I found that many of the fights were WAY too long, not that they were too hard, but had too many enemies and just took too much time and eventually just stopped playing.

I wish I could get back into it because I truly enjoyed it other than length of combat.

Maybe my builds were just bad. :)

There are one or two fights like that because mostly I plow through everything now in a round or two. You start pretty weak and end up OP like most RPGs these days.

I'm almost done with Act 1. I'm playing on the second hardest difficulty and my bladedancer main and Kibella continue to be absolute monsters compared to everyone else. I'm sure the others will come into their own but the ability to use Death From Above multiple times per turn and Blade Dancer throughout is just ridiculous compared to everyone else.

I know this game is centered around turn-based combat but the number of actions a character can take per turn highlights the difference in flow between this and a real-time with pause games like Baldur's Gate 1/2. I'm enjoying the combat but every fight ending within a few rounds and the fight being highly determined by the initial turn-order dice roll is goofy.

My faves are the sniper xeno bitch from act 2, abelard with a shield going into arch militant, and Argenta with heavy bolter going into master tactician. Argenta takes a few to get going but once she does, she is blasting. I dont use too much of Kibellah because my main is the same but better. Pasqual is my buff bitch but he can blast some fools too. Heindrix can be good too. sort of like a psyker version of abelard. Can build him tanky and plus some psyker powers. The new dude is super cool too. Shotguns shield and doggo. Multiple attacks by him AND his dog in a single turn. Pretty cool. I use him too because, well, he is like the main focus of this new expansion.

Nice. Just finished 2nd run through on Daring with Santic Pskyer Officer / GS as well. With 3 Officers / GS always, TBH almost every ground combat was near trivial. Three Officers that always go first, giving you potentially 3 Bring it Down, and 3 Finest Hour before any enemy gets to move.

Will definitely be back for a Core difficulty run when all DLCs are out.

I've had this game forever, but haven't played it because I wanted to wait for all the DLC to come out since I rarely (if ever) play a CRPG a second time. However, the next couple DLC aren't scheduled for release for another year so I'm just going to run it with the two that are currently available.

As I've said, I know jack shit about the 40k ruleset. I don't have any interest in playing on an extreme difficulty that requires extensive knowledge and juiced builds. Combat will work itself out with companions so I want my character to do well on the social checks and be a bit of a skill monkey -- if those two are possible to combine.

I have a couple of characters built Noble Officer and Noble Soldier, but leaning towards the Officer.

Also, are shotguns worth using?

I have some sort of shotgun on Abalar or whatever his name is, and it seems to be okay as a backup to a two handed sword.

I did the same this week. I had started a deal maybe a little after I bought it but shelved it because of getting busy, picked it back up.

I'm doing a noble officer. I just finished act 1, and I've been using a las rifle. I honestly don't know what weapons to build into and what's good and what's bad. Part of it is just a learning curve with figuring out what your different companions are able to do and where you can fill the gaps. It's nice being able to make most skill checks and conversation stuff without any issues though.

It looks like you can respec, so I might change it up once I get a grasp on everything.

It's definitely a little more complicated than just jumping into a 3.5 or 5th edition version of d&d where I know all the mechanics.

I'm having a lot of fun with it though and stayed up pretty late last night finishing that first chapter. I'm trying to figure out what second archetype to pick. Problem is I start pulling up guides and stuff and it gets a little overwhelming where I just kind of want to play the game, but it looks like you can respec whenever that I'm sure there's a mod that allows you to do it.

They're fine if you go all in on building for them which doesn't really mesh with your plan to make your RT a social/skill monkey. If you want to use shotguns on your RT I'd run an Arbitrator-Vigilant Soldier rather than a Noble Officer.

I'm not particularly tied to using shotguns. From reading the Officer skills, it doesn't look like he'll be doing much damage himself, but I entertained shotgun as a way to defend against stuff that broke through to the back line where the Officer would be giving orders.

I haven't played the game so I am really just theory-crafting out of my ass. Thanks for the heads up.

Which companion should I be looking for as my 'rogue' stand-in for finding hidden/secret stuff?

Shotguns are not bad. They are short range weapons and push enemies which can be built for decent extra damage.

They recently got a buff too. new dlc companion uses them. They are an aoe weaon. So if you position your dude correct you can hit multiple enemies. Or enemies and your dudes too, so be careful. They also added a ton of shotties to the game because of the new DLC dude too.

The skill checks can be spread out pretty well. 6 man party kind of makes it pretty easy.

cassia/argenta are great for perception.
Argenta for demo/agility.
pasqual can handle any int check skill.
Jae iirc can do EVERY skill thanks to her bonkers cold trader passive.
heinrix xeno iirc. cassia/idira warp.
