Cool game so far, on par with Divinity: Original Sin in terms of quality, and it feels a lot like Fallout 1/2. A lot of the mechanics are really weird, though. For instance, I'm several hours into the game so far and literally every single fight, with no exception, has been horrendously anti-ranged because every mob within a radius of three screens instantly sprints into melee range of your party in the first round.
It's to the point where entire weapon classes are completely without any possible purpose. Assault rifles and sniper rifles can't hit in close range, and shotguns are too risky to use in a crowd because of friendly fire. You can initiate the fight with a sniper shot, I suppose, but then you're unlikely to get to use it again that fight so it's not worth investing points into the skill.
At this point in time (about six hours into the game), melee weapons, handguns and SMGs are the only reliable weapons because they're effective and safe in close quarters. Nothing else is really viable as there is essentially no ranged element to this game, you simply use melee attacks or you shoot your guns in melee range. It's really dumb.
The only way I can see this combat system working out is if the majority of fights later on are against enemies with guns. So far, at level 5 or so, I think I've encountered two enemies that used ranged weapons. I hope this changes or I'll just remake an all-melee/handgun party.
