I’ve been reading through the Dhammapada. It’s considered one of the earliest and core teachings of the Buddah. I can’t recommend it enough for anyone. So much wisdom for leading a good life that, I think, applies in this modern age as well as anytime. It does mention reincarnation but it’s not central. I think if Christians and atheists gave it a chance they’d see the wisdom in his words.

I see we are getting closer to waxing philosophical about Siddhartha. Fascinating. This has always been a great read, don't get me wrong. But what makes you so against to reading Christian philosophy if you're now willing to read far Eastern philosophy?

Do you weigh Buddha as better than Christ in some way? If so, why? If I were to sum up the single most important thing about Christianity it would be that it promotes us to emulate Christ. Which is to willingly sacrifice and suffer for the sake of others. Other religions do not have this perspective.

I consider Buddah and Jesus to the two of the most enlightened teachers. I wouldn’t really weigh either higher than the other. I highly value the red texts sayings of Jesus in the New Testament but can take or leave what Paul and others wrote. There are definitely some good things that Paul and others wrote, even in the Old Testament but also lots of garbage. I’m pretty familiar with the canonical gospels so lately I’ve been looking into Buddha’s teaching and the Gnostic Gospels that the early Christian church tried to bury, specifically the gospel of Thomas and the Apocryphon of John. They have a lot of similarities to my beliefs and the portrayal of God in the Apocryphon of John closely matches my idea of God.

I also don’t think Christs main message was to suffer for others but I want to think that out a little more before I reply to that.

Buddhism addresses this from a practical perspective. It teaches you to find the source of your suffering and learn how to handle it. Helping others comes in all the usual forms as part of mindfulness.

I think it’s dangerous to glorify suffering and you end up with some nasty cult of suffering leaders like Mother Teresa. I don’t think this was Christs message. I think Christs message was, in part, that with Unity Consciousness you can eliminate suffering altogether. You too will do all these things and greater. You too can turn water into wine, you too can feed the multitudes with 2 fish and five loaves of bread. Scarcity is a lie and our Creator provided us with abundance but we need unity consciousness to access it. Human greed, separation from God, and forgetting we are all One, are keeping it from us.
