I always just assumed that it was the way people differentiated between the actual plant you smoke from vapes, edibles, etc.

Personally I like smoking more, I find it easier to settle into. The vape carts, even the Live Rosin carts with no fake chems make it hard to portion out and just hit different.
Try and find a sale where you can buy an assorted variety of pre rolled joints. After smoking them, determine which one gave the best effect for you and try and stick with that one for a bit.
Everyone's nervous system reacts to things differently. I would check this BASIC chart of terpene types. This is not gospel just a starting off point. As new terpenes are being discovered and the corrosponding genes isolated all the time, more and more options will be available to you.

Same but in MA. Hasn't used THC since highschool and I don't drink, so decided to hit the dispensary. Literally a 2 minute walk from my house... And it was the nicest atmosphere with the friendliest people lol. We had some national fame because this dispensary both 1) randomly put on a concert with method man and cypress hill in my small town and 2) put up a borat billboard and got sued by borat.
The worker must've been high but he also tried to sell me on his Goonies 2 script.

I've tried smoking weed(years ago, college, likely dubious quality), 20mg edibles more recently, and 6 hits off my wife's vape. She uses it medicinally and recreationally, so I at least trust she's getting efficacious stuff.
I can't feel a fucking difference every time I try it. If I really wanted to verify that I have the world's most useless super power, what form of THC and amount should I try?

No idea about vape bullshit.
But as far as smoking actual plain old weed. Most users I've talked to have a similar experience as me. The first couple times, it had no noticable effect. I don't pretend to know the mechanism. Its a statement about how subtle the effects are, though. Its like your brain has to learn to recognize them.
Just try it a couple more times, it'll kick in. After those first couple times there will be no more question of "am I feeling it yet?"
