Main stuff I got from going to the Zalympix this year. It was a blast and I was totally lost on what everything going on was. This was pretty light as I spent more times talking to the growers than swag hunting. I got invited to help with a Pheno hunt early next year which is going to be awesome.

Also the second place winner was actually what I voted for as first place. Managed to pick up like the last jar in Michigan on my way home.

I barely smoke these days but there's a pheno from my teenage days that I would love to find again and have so far been unsuccessful. Its was grown by some hippie in western Oklahoma in the 80's, early 90's outdoors, probably a pure sativa. What was so unique about it was the smell/taste. It was like the most intense, Christmas tree/pine smell you've ever smelled. We called it the Fine Pine. Pretty much the opposite of all the skunky/kushy shit that floods the market now. It also had fabulous bag appeal, absolutely beautiful stuff. Man, if you ever come across a pheno like that shoot me a DM. An actual old school Northern Lights would be great too.

Haha will do. There is a lot of call for OG strains in Michigan. There is definitely an over abundance of Szkittles and Runtz cross strains right now.

Well, I'm pretty sure I'm going to look into getting a card this week. I hadn't messed with this shit since high school, and that was only a handful of times when I was hanging out with stoner friends. But I was in the military immediately out of high school, and then held a clearance job my entire working career.

I've got a fucked up back, with moderate degenerative disc disease in about half my thoracic, and then mild DDD in the rest of my thoracic, and half my cervical. Add in some bone spurs in my cervical spine for good measure. I've got back pain basically every hour of the day, although it's worse the longer the day goes (I get a reset in the morning, although lately I've been getting more nights where it just persists and I get no relief).

I've spent a few thousand dollars in the last couple years going to doctors. GP referred me to orthopedic, who said he can't do shit for me, but sent me to physical therapy. Physical therapy did all manner of shit from stretches and lifting (I lift 6 times a week already though, and that's probably the only thing keeping me from being bedridden) to cupping and dry needling (needles about 3-4 inches into muscle bellies on each side of spine and then passing an electrical current through them). None of that helped, so he recommended an interventional pain specialist. He said there's basically nothing they can do to make it better, and my best hope is maintaining this level of pain. He sent me to a nerve study last week, and then I follow up in a few weeks. He said the only possibilities would be a nerve block (think epidural), and if that doesn't help, burning the nerves off completely. I've had multiple MRIs and X-rays and I'm tired of throwing money at this to be told they can't help me.

Anyway, I was talking to my drum teacher last week about all this, and he gave me a gunny and said to take half of it. Now, maybe it was placebo, but it seemed to work pretty well. I didn't necessarily get high though, maybe a 2/10. So I'm thinking this is the route to go as traditional medicine doesn't seem useful.

All that to say, I'm in Florida and after doing tons of reading, a bit disappointed because it sounds like in major metropolitan areas the options are better (lots of people saying go to Releaf where it's a $90 card). The best price I can find in the Pensacola area for an initial consult is $200. The whole thing just seems like a shady money grab, but whatever at this point.

I'm thinking of just going edibles. One, because my lungs are already a bit fucked from three tours in Iraq and whatever nasty shit I inhaled there, but two because I'm looking for something that can last most of the day. I don't know shit about weed, but it sounds like indica is the way to go for pain relief? But I also don't want to be tired as fuck.

And while I say I want this just for pain (and also combat PTSD as a bonus), I probably wouldn't mind some for fun every once in a while (and could put up with smoking it on rare occasions). I drummed after eating that half a gummy and it was great, and I wouldn't mind that again. My only experience with smoking it was in bongs. Vaping sounds terrible and like one of those things that we don't know if it's doing terrible things to your lungs.

So yeah, long post, if anyone has any recommendations for me I'm open to it. Whether that's brand recommendations, where to find shit on sale, strains to look for, methods. Whatever. I'm not a stoner, so this is all foreign to me.

I unfortunately don't know shit about the Florida market. You will probably want to stick to Indica or at least hybrid-Indica strains. Mainly because Sativa is known to give people some anxiety and with some PTSD that wouldn't be good. The first test with edibles will be to see if you are one of those that aren't affected by them at all. Gummies are very wishy washy with me and I have to take like 100 mg to really get anything out of it. Part of that is also my tolerance as I consider myself a heavy smoker.

As for smoking, I would look into dry herb vapes. I have been using them for almost a year now and it's nowhere near as bad as combustion. Basically you are packing a bowl and then using heat either through conduction or convection that heats the flower and boils off the stuff that gets you high. This cuts out all the stuff that doesn't actually get you high from burning it normally. You get a nice vapor instead of a cloud of carbon. I have recently upgraded to an Arizer Solo 3 v2 and I haven't used anything else since.

Well, shit, didn't know you were in Pensacola. Was just there last weekend to see my sister.

My concern with vaping is I guess more about the vape themselves, not the bud. Seems like they're just a hastily adopted new thing that seems dicey. I dunno, could just be me buying into the news stories that cropped up right before covid.

I'm actually in Gulf Breeze, but there are no docs here for cards, so have to go to Pensacola. I actually found one not too long after I posted that has a fall special coupon code for initial visits, so I got it for about $100 (DocMJ). Wasn't super excited about using my credit card, but that's the only thing they'd take.

Going to take my VA disability paperwork that says I have a fucked up back and PTSD, and hope that's enough. Well, I've also got some MRI results I'll take, but no other doctors records. From what I've read, it honestly sounds like it's just a pencil whip exercise and they don't actually care, despite saying you should bring records. I've also seen a bunch of people say they get a temporary card immediately and can use it the same day, so we'll see. Appointment is tomorrow. Also hoping that I do this and next year Florida passes recreational and I don't have to pay for this again.

Appreciate the advice, I'll avoid sativa. I'm mostly trying to figure out what to buy because it seems most of these shops have massive discounts for your first purchase, so want to figure out what to buy. I'm getting gummies for sure, but maybe considering some pre-rolled. Getting some actual bud might be nice, but I just don't know how I'll consume it.

It is funny though, my mom was a huge pothead in her teen years (grandparents were hippies and they'd all smoke together). I remember listening to Cypress Hill and looking up all kinds of pictures of buds and stuff, and was always fascinated by it. But I think I smoked it 3 times and never bought any myself. The first was a joint when I was like 14 or 15 and I don't think I even inhaled, the 2nd was with a stoner buddy and I got super paranoid, and the 3rd I was shitfaced drunk and don't know that I even felt it. I'm assuming my mom likely thought I was a huge stoner cause I doubt I cleared my browser history, and I was a shit student (and I did weird shit like burn incense constantly).

Wrong types of vapes. The vapes that got a bad wrap are the crap distillate ones. Dry Herb Vaping has been around since the 90's.

Arizer-MAIN-Images-02_Solo-III.jpg

This is what I use. The flower goes into the bottom of the stem and then you put that into the top of the device. It's all glass pathway from the oven to your lungs. A lot of the devices in this category get made overseas as they are considered medical devices over there.

I will say be careful with prerolls as they usually are just using shake and trim from the buds. I rarely get them personally since I know how to roll and breaking it down from fresh nugs is just a better experience.

I have been smoking pretty consistently for probably over 30 years now. My first time was at around 14-15. We were having a D&D session and my buddy came over and had stolen some joints from his brothers stash lol. I have become more of a connoisseur since delving into the Michigan market and getting away from black market connections. At least I really know what I am buying now.

Edibles are absolutely the way to go if you're looking for that slow-building, long-lasting high - especially in your case, where it sounds like pain management is part of the goal. When I want something that keeps me mellow and relaxed throughout the day, edibles are always my first choice. I deal with fairly bad arthritis in my knees, and while I don't use marijuana specifically to treat that, it's definitely a welcome side benefit. Once the effects kick in, I notice the tension and discomfort ease up, and it just makes everything a little more manageable.

Now, vaping tends to get a bad rap, but honestly, a lot of that is blown way out of proportion. Kind of like when people were acting like the world's food supply was collapsing because a few processing plants caught fire. It's the same brand of media sensationalism. That said, I'm not claiming vaping is good for your lungs. Far from it. There's actually some solid evidence showing that marijuana smokers (meaning those who smoke straight flower, not vapes or oils) have lung cancer rates comparable to cigarette smokers. Still, I enjoy using a vape occasionally when I just want a quick, manageable high before something fun - like a concert, a late-night gaming session with friends, or even watching a great comedy show like Tires.

It's not something I'd recommend doing all day, every day, though. Constant vaping will definitely take a toll on your lungs over time. And, honestly, the people I know who seem most burned out by weed are the ones hitting their bong every 30 minutes without fail. It's a routine of self-sabotage, not a "lifestyle" like they all claim.

One more thing to keep in mind: you will build up a THC tolerance over time, especially if it becomes a daily or ritualistic part of your routine. In your case, that might be hard to avoid if you're using it for chronic pain, but just know that your dosage will need to increase the longer you stay consistent with it. Personally, I try to reset my tolerance by taking regular breaks. I'll use edibles or vape maybe once or twice a week for a month, then take the next month completely off. It makes a big difference in how effective it feels and it keeps the experience enjoyable rather than something my body just expects.

Damn, those vapes are fucking expensive.

Think I'll just take the above advice and stick to edibles. If I'm looking for a good time and not just for pain, I'll take a higher dosage.

Thanks, bros!

Haha yeah. The Solo 3 is considered one of the best and still costs just a bit over 220 when on sale. It is also a one and done, you don't really need to buy anything else unless you want to use a bong with it. The next steps up are like 350+, it's funny as fuck on Reddit when people ask for suggestions and these guys are all pushing 400 dollar investments that you also have to buy other shit to use with it. One of the other devices that gets pushed is the TinyMight 2 which starts at 350, but then they are all like you need to buy these addons to make it the best you can. Which is another 200 or so.

I'm an edible main myself. Only advice I'll give is take it slow at first. First couple times I took 10mg (after not smoking since highschool) and then the third time it hit me HARD. So hard that I felt unwell and immediately had to go to sleep. After that I found what dose works best for me is 5mg, but those first couple times were misleading for my body.

Definitely give it an hour or so before you up the dosage while you experiment too.

I took the other half of the one I was given a couple hours ago. I don't know if they were 10mg or 5mg. This one isn't even providing me a ton of pain relief (although I also probably bit off a bigger "half" the first time). Not even remotely anything you'd call a high.

But yeah, I figure whenever I buy some, I'll still start with half and take it from there. Would hate to be like, "well shit half of that one didn't work, so I'm taking a full one of this new kind" and get dumpstered.

Not sure what the edible/gummy scene is like in Florida, but if you have the option try to buy the rosin gummies. They will usually be a few bucks more, but they are better than distillate ones. Rosin gummies will give you a more full spectrum experience due to the entourage effect. It is also cleaner since they don't use solvents to isolate the THC.

Yeah, it's always best to wait at least a few hours before deciding if "these edibles ain't shit". If you get blasted on edibles, you have to ride the panic wave a loooooong time compared to smoking. THC metabolizes waaaay different in the liver vs. the lungs.

This is why I never tried that shit ever again. 1 edible? Nothing. Next weekend tried 1.5. Nothing. Final attempt? 2 edibles. I was high as fuck for the rest of the day, and ended up being extremely anxious about not coming back down, which made it quite awful. I was still feeling some effects the rest of the weekend.

Since legalization I've never had an edible that delivered any effect whatsoever.

Meanwhile back in high school we could make a batch of brownies with 90s dirtweed and get absolutely destroyed, I mean honestly it was too strong.

I'm pretty sure they're just selling straight up gummy bears now and calling them "edibles".

And when an ounce of high quality bud is like $40, why would I experiment with ""edible"" dosage hoping to find some magical number that actually does something?

Yeah edibles is definitely a take small amounts at a time and wait for your first dose to take effect. Also, make sure you check the dosage of your gummies. I have accidentally eaten 200 mg when I thought it was 80mg lol.
