Fasting is totally fine, the only reason most people have an aversion to it is because "they're literally starving" if they only had a sandwich for lunch and it's past 4pm or some shit.
I had pretty bad ulcer problems for a good many years, and have gone 4-5 days without eating many, many times. I know it's just the first day that sucks, and everything else after that is fine. Really any change you make - it's just the first day you gotta get thru, and your body adapts. Eating 3k calories and you need to eat 2k a day to lose weight? Well, sorry man, but today is gonna suck. Tomorrow is gonna be better though, and every other day easier after that. Then you come to the conclusion that you're not eating because you're hungry, you're eating because you're bored.
The easiest thing to do as far as I'm concerned is just have self control for an hour a week - the hour you spend at the grocery store. A lot of weeks I don't even go. But when I do, it's chicken, blueberries, milk and I order my protein powder off Amazon. That's literally 85% of my diet (wife cooking dinner is the other part). Just don't buy a bunch of bullshit at the store, and you can't eat a bunch of bullshit.
The other thing that really made sense for me and really makes it work was the advice to always have prepped meals available. My freezer is full of chicken and burrito bowls. I have chicken every day for lunch (I freely admit my superpower is I tolerate low menu variation) and if we don't have a dinner plan, I just pull out a burrito bowl. 392 calories. You know how much "oh let's just grab something for dinner" is? Usually a fuck of a lot more than 392 calories. If you have a plan, and you can eliminate the temptation, you can accomplish quite a lot.
Reminds me - I gotta take out a pork shoulder to toss in the crock pot this weekend. Gonna make a fuckload of burrito bowl/pulled pork meals and freeze them.
