If this is true i do not think you will get the job
Then I will conquer his lands and enslave his women.

idk, boss pulled me aside today, told him about this, he offered to match me and basically put me in the IAM position here and says he's going to work with corporate to get a safety net in place. So it looks like either way this goes, I get about a 30% raise and get to build a team. I talked to him specifically about changes I wanted made to the team, assuming we get the contract in August and staffing changes are possible. He was on board for it.

Part of me thinks he's only so on board because he needs me, but whatever. It is what it is.

So all the apache pros, help me out. This lady at work wants to make a web page and I have to set up the back end. She wants to have a home page with a login spot. Based on the user credentials, she wants them to be redirected to a different area only those specific credentials have access to. For whatever reason, she doesn't want to use wordpress. All html/css. I have been wracking my brain trying to get the htpasswd/htaccess files to do this. Is there an easier way? using Centos 7 and apache.

Edited to add, I am currently trying the usedir file and vhosts but idk if I am barking up the wrong tree or not. Not all that good with linux.

So I'm taking a year off of school before I pursue a PhD in History (mainly due to financial circumstance and the fact that history programs around the country are closing). I don't want to teach or do some bullshit job in the meantime, so I've been looking into consulting. From what I've read online and people in the industry have told me, it's possible to find a consulting firm willing to hire someone with an MA in History, it's just going to be a little more difficult. I'm hearing the same shit over and over, "diversify yourself from the business majors, emphasize analytical skills and research ability, sell your degree" etc. etc.

Wondering if anyone here is in the consulting field and knows of hirings outside of the business, math, engineering etc. degrees. Am I wasting my time?

I know I usually troll the fuck out of you guys but I'm really trying to turn my life around here!

Well.. What kind of consultant jobs are there out there for people with degrees in history? If you don't like teaching history probably wasn't the best choice of major unless you plan on writing non-fiction..

I worked with a woman at the grocery store who held a BS in electrical engineering from MIT but decided never to pursue any jobs.

It was the most depressing thing I had ever witnessed. Then she got lung cancer... still with us, still working there..

Well for instance, take a look at the description of an associate at L.E.K. Consulting:

Associate Position:

The focal point of an L.E.K. project team is at the Associate level. The Associate is responsible for the comprehensive research and analysis upon which each client engagement is based. Success of the team is dependent upon the quality and creativity of the analysis that Associates perform under the guidance of senior team members.

Specific responsibilities include:

Gathering primary and secondary data on markets, competitors, and customers through database and Internet searches, market research and other commercial reports, internal client data, and telephone and in-person interviews.

Developing rigorous strategic and financial analysis that will be utilized to determine L.E.K.'s recommendation to the client. Examples include developing a spreadsheet model of market growth and competitor share, developing a valuation model for a company or product using discounted cash flow analysis, testing customer sensitivity to product attributes using adaptive conjoint analysis, or determining probability distributions of acquisition value.

Collaborating with project team members to derive trends, conclusions, and recommendations based upon the analysis. An Associate must transform what he or she has learned into thoughtful insights regarding the client's strategic direction.

Making L.E.K. an enjoyable and rewarding place to work. This includes coaching colleagues and transferring skills, offering constructive advice, and contributing to the social environment of the office.

Now I may not have the financial skills (although I have worked as a junior accountant for 6 years -- 3 years in Florida, 3 years in Jersey) they're looking for, but the research requirements are right up my alley. Who can research better than a Historian? And my written and verbal skills were shaped during my time pursuing my MA as well. Does this seem like a stretch? Or would they take my application seriously?

I think the problem with a job like that is not that they'd take your application seriously - they'd take a whole bunch of people's applications seriously.

I tend to think places like LEK will look for really strong MBA or MA (Accounting) graduates not History. Can't hurt to apply.

Well... what better reason would there possibly be for him to be on board? Because he thinks you're just a swell guy?

To hell with that. Take "I need you" every. fucking. time.

If your recommendations pan out then he'll need you even more. And if they dont? Well, he'll still need you the same amount because you just unloaded an entire wheelbarrow full of bullshit into his lap!

The irony here is that I was an accounting major with a 4.0 gpa and decided it was too boring and switched majors -- and ended up working 6 years as an accountant. So perhaps I can sell my work history along with an MA history to show my flexibility or ability to succeed in any field.

Accounting is boring, so that was good, but then you chose history? History is interesting but then, what do you do as a job, teach history?

Spent three hours on a plane next to a cute undergrad who wants to go to law school. Crushed her ideals like a fucking gnat. You guys can thank me later.

Thank you for what? How is she supposed to resort to porn WITHOUT crushing student loan debt?
Maybe you have to be in the law to feel the burn of this one but we don't need yet another cute female law student who wants to work at the Hague and do international civil rights or help children or something. The 75% of them that already want to do only this and then "sell out" to go to work for real law firms and then complain every step of the way and act like work is oppressive etc is enough.

I went on some first date with a chick whose parents paid her way through SMU law and she wanted to work for the UN so she "could make a difference", but had to settle for a local firm after her dreams were dashed. I spent thirty minutes listening to her whine about how she works sixty hour weeks being a legal slave to the partners, and how she was soon going to quit the legal field and become an interior decorator. I was amused that she actually though the UN has a positive influence on the world, but was less amused at her flippant comment regarding her parents when I asked how they felt about covering 100K+ for a law degree only to have their daughter become an interior decorator instead.

You could ask any of the 55% or so of the female law students this. Very few of them care anything about actually being lawyers and think going to law school is just the thing to do to complement their english literature degree and will allow them to get daily starbucks, apple and BMW products, and be an "educated" housewife vs. a stay-at-home by necessity. When I was in my third year one of them remarked to me that she really was disappointed that there weren't more jobs in international issues so that she could work in Europe where she really wanted to be.

I was like. Holy shit, get a fucking grip. You got a professional degree, go be a goddamn professional.

And its more than $100k now, lol
