I just spent a bunch of time in the mountains with my youngest kid. Just him and me. We camped, hiked, fished, saw amazing things, watched bears, climbed 14K+ feet peaks, and saw some good friends. In the entire time we were there, and we drove there so it was a wicked long drive, never once a complaint about the drive. Never a question about when he would get cell service back. Never once when it was not clear he was delighted to be there with me. He and I talked about things we've never talked about. I have never laughed so hard with him. He's turning in to a man, and the past week has been a crash course in me accepting that and treating him as such.
I just spent 8 days alone with my youngest son, and we came out of it with big smiles, no fights, and awesome stories. I'm going to count that as a win.
