I might actually trust this guy to change my oil:

Real cost from the dude's Facebook page is supposedly $300. Which doesn't seem that bad with as much care he puts into it (for people who an mechanically inept).

So my mom is shopping for a crossover/small SUV. Looking to keep it to $35k or less, paying cash. She doesn't drive much, as her 2013 escape hasn't hit 30k miles yet, but she just had to have the subframe repaired as it's rotting. She does some light towing, but mostly short distance rural and suburban driving.

She tested a Kona the other day, which she liked, and is going to check out a Crosstrek next. VW Taos and Honda HR-V are on the radar as well. I'm partial to the Crosstrek and Subaru offers a factory trailer hitch for it, which is a plus. When my dad had a hitch added to his Palisade by the place the dealership recommended, they royally fucked up something electrical and it took months to get fixed properly.

Just looking for Ideas to kick around.
A rotting subframe? How is that even a thing? Especially in a vehicle only 12 years old. Man that’s disappointing heh. 😕

I spent an hour in the BMW showroom while getting my car serviced last week and there's not many cars in there that I could see myself driving. Maybe i4 or i5 (although I really don't care for the front end). They all have the exact same interior too and the screens look like a 12 year old's idea of futuristic.

The center screen has a zillion icons and you need to scroll up or down to even see them all. Who thought that was a good idea for a car.

The same guys who did the last Nokia i owned I guess. My brother has an I4 and I always cry when I have to drive it. Try to find the where to go to disconnect the charging cable on the menu.

Maybe I'm weird but I set the ventilation controls once like 5 years ago and basically never touch them. I just move the temp (which is just one touch) up or down a couple degrees if needed. Not really sure what you'd even need to change in there, it's automatic climate control.

Where I live we have 30+ degree temperature swings through the day. In the morning it might be 65, which means unless I set the cabin temp to below that the heater triggers. Then five minutes later after the sun has warmed things up the AC is on full blast because it thinks I wants a refrigerator. In the winter if I'm wearing a jacket I have to set the temp in the 60's to keep from sweating, and if there's little greenhouse heating swing suddenly I'm air conditioning in December.

It's dumb. I just want a convenient vent function without constant active heating or cooling. A floor/ceiling is much more reflective of how people think about comfort.

Condensation? Isn’t the subframe metal? Idk I’ve only owned HD trucks the past 15 years

grass means constant moist air above it so things rust a lot faster

also, if you ever seen the inside of a 10 year old lawnmower, that is the kind of shit that will be stuck to your car

Parking cars consistently on grass does things.

Parked on pavement or in a garage (in the winter), but it still got plenty of salt exposure thanks to northern NY winters.

She ended up getting a 2026 Kona limited and was offered a low enough interest rate that she financed it. She's going to let the money do some work, then pay it off in a year or two.

Maybe I'm just not very sensitive to hot/cold but I just leave it on 70 year round and basically never touch it.

Yeah I guess. My last truck only had surface rust on the frame where that stick black coating had been removed over the years. Maybe it’s my location.

Ah ok. Yeah the salt explains it. That’s wild. Hope she enjoys the new car.

Please don't buy new cars around 30-40k.

You can get so much better on the 2nd hand market for that price.

In Europe the price of small cars has increased by 20-80% in a few years, because of required lane assist, belt tensioner, active pedestrian protection, ... shit you never needed and still don't.

I have nfc in what market a new Kona is an interesting proposition. A young x1 that has gone through the first few years of depreciation would save a lot of money I am sure.

It sucks we have to get to the point where the government has to step in to stop asshole styling departments and Musk from being idiots. I'm all for innovation, but all this stuff they've been doing is objectively substantially worse.

HVAC controls peaked with the 3 dials. Anything beyond that has been inferior.

I disagree. I bought my last 2 cars brand new. You just need to shop for deals. My 2020 Gladiator was 9k off sticker and my 2025 Mustang GT was 8k off sticker. I really wasn't looking to buy either car at the time but ridiculous rebates and low financing sold me on cars I wasn't even looking at.

Used cars were gotten rid of for a reason. Especially low mileage used cars. 9 times out of 10 you are buying someone else's problem without a factory warranty.

The thing about buying a low mileage premium to get 20% or more off compared to new (yes after whatever "reduction" you get) is that you buy it at a dealer and have factory warranty still.

You could have bought a gladiator / mustang with 5k miles on it and have saved thousands, if not 10+.

"off sticker" means nothing outside that garage. You shouldn't use that as a point to value the trade by.

My S550 ran about 300 bucks (at dealer). That isn't too bad.

There's huge money to be saved buying low miles used. I bought a used low miles Highlander out of state for $10k+ off local prices, and about $15k off new for a lesser trim. It was as brand spanking new. Why not get more for less?

It ended up costing me about $1k a year total, and that was with trading it in at a dealership. They were within $500 of my deal price, then I thought about all the assholes I wouldn't have to deal with selling it myself, and that loss was an easy loss.

For everyday runabouts like this, buying used is the only way to go.
