Car UI’s are a point for me. I do not like android or apple auto things

I loved the Volvo infotainment in my XC90… it was ground up their product..then 2022? The moved to an android based version- where they emulated their UI style and look, but used android as the OS…it became junk.

My MachE fauxstang has ford sync… and I actually like using it better than my apple car play… however ford wants me to pay to use my “advanced” navigation…. So….i may get used to CarPlay.

There's no need to apologize. I assure you that your opinion on my car will never hurt my feelings. I ran into a guy on the BMW subreddit who was talking about his Taycan looking cooler than some other car and I mentioned that 4 door Porsche will never look cool and he got very upset. People get very offended like they designed the car...

Modern MS Sync isn't bad. The original versions weren't horrible, but were primitive. I still remember when we got my wife's Escort in 2013 I am tinkering with it and see it has a wifi access point built in for some reason. I turn it on, connect, and run nmap. Dear fucking God..... I can tell you it was running Windows 2000 CE, and let's just say if I had wanted to violate it, it would have had little recourse but to lay back and enjoy. But I didn't want to break her car.

Now that same head unit is sitting in a box in my garage and I can't get the time/desire to tinker with it because it's so old. The Infotainment system in the caddy is the Cadillac Cue system. It's not hard to tell it's android based, but mine is also the 2017 model and doesn't support Android Auto or Carplay over wireless. I have read some articles about people jailbreaking and popping the bootloaders on them. So that might be a down the road project. Would love to be able to roll my own build and load it onto the system with the integrated access to the cars onboard systems.

I think the optimal system would be for auto manufacturers to build good built in systems, and have them ALSO have Carplay and Android Auto available. If they're systems are really good then people will use them instead. If they're bloated, less than optimal, and turn your car into a microtransaction/subscription hell that would make a mobile game maker envious well... that's your own fault.

A current system that both sucks and is “simple not over doing it” is Mazdas… either step forward and be a full fledged system with all the bells and whistles or step back and be old school classic necessities only.

I love that color.

I had totally the same thing years ago, totally (ok it wasn't as fun of a green color :p )

Also check out that peak early 2000s interior. I loved my police scanner and whatever that thing plugged into the OBD connector was called. I STILL get emails from that Tom Tom company. I have no idea how they are still in business, but apparently my 20 year old GPS monstrosity above the dashboard can longer fit modern map updates, oh no :*(

It was a police scanner. In some states, it would detect if the police shoulder mount repeater was close enough and warn you. Back when I first got it, it would pick up early cell phone conversations before those were digitized lol.
