So I started thinking about what I'd love to see remade

Then thinking about how many great studios over the decades have been cannibalized by companies like EA.

Then I just got mad.

Anyways..

Ultima 7
Sim City 2000
Guitar Hero
Dragon Force

Either a remake or a 3rd in the series, please.

That's another good one. I don't know of another game after Prototype 2 that captured the kind of metropolitan armeggan as a violent, remorseless and confused monster.

IMO ALTTP still holds up really well but a graphical uplift would sell a billion copies. Sadly I own zero new(as of gamecube) hardware so it would be lost to me. Zelda 2 is one of my fav NES games and wouldn't mind a remake of it but again..I'll never own another Nintendo console.
There is a fan remaster of Zelda 2 that is a standalone PC game. It keeps the 8 bit esthetic, but it's in a wide screen format and everything is adjusted / changed. I never played it but it's supposedly very good if you want a Zelda 2 fix : ZIIAOL by HoverBat

As for the remaster thing, the game that always pops to mind for me is a PS1 japan exclusive called Front Mission : Alternative. It's a giant robot RTS in the Front Mission universe, but the original game was mechanically very bland, but had an awesome atmosphere. Upgraded graphics, better game systems and keeping the almost contemplative pace of the game would make for a great remake.

I'll go super old school with the remakes I'd love to see:

The original Wizardry, Ultima 3 and Ultima 4.

Total Annihilation and Star Wars Empire at War

TA doesn't need to be changed other than updated graphics. Hell the original if I remember right supports higher resolutions just fine, however instead of increasing graphical fidelity it just shows 'more' of the battlefield which ends up with units being progressively smaller as resolution goes up. Turning the game into true 3D instead of a pseudo 3D contour map with actual 3D units, along with camera controls to go with it, would be fucking awesome

EAW same thing really, just need it to run on an engine that doesn't bog down and shit itself. Love doing the Galactic Conquest mode but it becomes nigh unplayable after a certain point. The Battletech turn based game made by Hairbrained Studios has the same problem.

TA sort of got a remake with Supreme Commander and then at least kind of has a spiritual successor in Beyond All Reason. SC is still hella old at this point, though.

Definitely Xenogears. Xenosaga was somewhat of an attempt, 15-20 years ago or whatever it was. And while I did enjoy parts of Xenosaga, it just doesn't compare to how mindblown my buddy and I were playing through Xenogears at 14-15 years old.

I'd like to see the SSI Gold Box D&D games redone, not remastered but redone from scratch in an engine like GB3 or Pathfinder.

Maybe even the SSI Black Box Eye of the Beholder series.

The original Ogrebattle. One of the first tactical RPG's that I at least played with tons of different units. It only suffered from poor enemy AI and the system behind the battle map that turned it from tactical to zerg rush.

I finished this game a couple times. What I would do is consolidate all the most powerful characters into the first, second, and third units. The most powerful would go in the first, then second, etc. I wasn't trying to balance them or anything.

Then I'd leave units 2 and 3 guarding the base (unit 2 slightly in front, and unit 3 just there as backup). If anything slipped by and went for the base capture, they'd deal with it.

Meanwhile, my OP first unit with all the strongest characters stacked in it would BEELINE for the enemy base, grabbing any towns along the way, and rip through everything due to their OP levels. When they hit the boss, I'd bomb tarot cards (which I hoarded the rest of the time) to make sure the boss went down.

Was able to beat the entire game pretty easily in about 10-12 hours doing this, IIRC. However my reptuation meter was perpetually tanked, and I never got any sort of good ending, due to my lack of liberating many towns / keeping them secure once liberated, and having one unit do almost everything.

Xenogears should have been remade ages ago. It's one of the greatest sci-fi epic RPGs of all time, maybe THE greatest. It's also trapped on PS1, with archaic-looking 3D graphics (that were really nice / ahead of their time in 1998, at least).

I've never played another game with story/lore/etc comparable to Xenogears. The lore takes place over 10,000 years. I think it was originally supposed to be a Chrono Trigger sequel, considering it was designed by many of the same people, and considering there are six or so vastly-different time periods that the story focuses on (though you only get to play the present day, everything else is cutscene and flashback).

Xenosaga started out as a retelling of the very beginning of the Xenogears backstory (10,000 years before present) but since the developers no longer worked for Xenogears owner Squaresoft, they couldn't make it directly connected. So instead they had to dick about with slightly-changing everything to the point that it isn't a prequel at all anymore. So you'll have things taking place in 4748 AD instead of 4747 AD, names slightly changed, and no sign of the Eldridge ship that set Xenogears into motion.

It's a shame because a retelling of Xenogears from the ground-up could have been amazing, and kept Monolithsoft busy for like a decade.

Xenoblade Chronicles X also gets a lot of material from Xenogears without being connected. Xenosaga is basically the first era of Xenogears (10k YBP in space) and Xenoblade X is basically the second era (9600 YBP and post-crash). But neither is connected so it's all just concepts being reused.

Xenogears getting the respect it should (a remake, remaster, sequel, prequel, basically anything) should probably be at the top of anybody's wishlist who liked 90's Squaresoft RPGs. Cause it probably ain't ever happening.
