I was thinking about buying a motorcycle when I was in my 20's because of course I was and I went to some motorcycle message boards and newsgroups and it was nothing but people talking about crashes and close calls with cars (they called people driving cars "cagers"). By the time I had spent a couple hours reading posts I was like "What kind of moron would ride one of these things?". I was in California at the time as well so I got to experience the thrill of lane splitters going by a foot away from my mirror at 60 mph.

They're cool but the road I live on has a little memorial where a geezer pulled out in front of a motorcycle and killed two people. Even going by that spot on a bicycle feels weird.

I looked back but didn’t see anything so R.I.P. Rony Ely.

The Tarzan show was a fairly significant part of my childhood and Doc Savage was cool.

Sounds like he had a few rough years before he died.

I know of 2 serious motorbike accidents, both were opposite ends of the spectrum of riders.

One I work with was early 20s at the time, he would get together with a group and blast about some of the nearby mountain roads. Fun sure - but highly dangerous yes. Well his mis-judged something and got flipped over at high speed. He broke ribs, crushed a bunch of vertebrae that needed to be fused. He was lucky to not die or end up in a wheelchair. He is about 3 inches shorter now from lost body length plus him now walking stooped like an old man.

The other was a guy who, I actually never met him but . . . he was a guy that my mother was looking to become good friends with - after my parents had divorced. He was the good and sensible type of rider mid 50s, always paid attention on the road etc. But one day some junkie chick in her car, just plowed straight into him head-on killed instantly.

So fuck ever getting a motorbike.

Dang dude I just looked him up. That was in the 1960s! Congrats on your long beard.

I remember watching him in the 70s but, yeah, when I looked him up I was surprised it went that far back. I grew up on repeats in the UK though. We watched shitloads of Laurel and Hardy and Howard Lloyd.
