I wouldn't say unprecedented. There's even a term for it. Typecast. It's happened forever.

You think the 3 stooges didn't take that to their grave? Gilligan? Come on. Hardly unprecedented.

If I ask my kids who the Three Stooges are, they wouldn't have any idea. They all know Captain Kirk, and not from me. I didn't care for TOS.

Edit: I just asked them if they knew who the Three Stooges were, and as I thought, they had no clue and my 20-year-old thought Gilligan's Island was in the Bahamas. All three knew Captain Kirk, and my two oldest knew Captain Picard (though one said, "Oh yeah, wasn't that professor X?).

I bet you Gen Z might not even know who Bugs Bunny is

Stooges were forgotten until boomers grew up watching them on tv as kids. Gen X/old millenials also saw episodes on TV.

Do they still play stooge stuff anywhere? That probably plays a big role in the current generations not being familiar with them

The show still plays on a channel that plays older shows. Just not that often. I seen an episode a few months ago. I very rarely watch actual TV though.

They had both accepted they are Captain Kirk and Picard-- rest of their work be damned.

As Shatner points out it's relatively unprecedented to still be talking about a character over 45+ years later as if it were current.

Patrick Stewart had made his peace with it as well.

RIP but he will be equally known as Professor X.

Damn had no idea. That was the first anime movie I ever watched in the mid 80s. Bought the DVD in the 2000s when I finally remembered the name. Just watched it again a few months back and its still amazing. Had no idea he voiced Lord Yupa.

that is recent

nausica is the reason studio ghibli instituted a no cuts, no changes, no trimming (basically film is untouched) and they have the final say on dubbing actors.

nausica was release in 85 and cut and trimmed to shit and thats when miyazaki instituted the new rules and it wouldn't be until the 20th anniversary in 05 they would release as original w/ a second dub (and why get patrick stewart)

Maybe that’s why I also didn’t recognize it as a kid, I attributed it to being young when I watched it
