I dont like relying on people to do a job in an online game. I also am not really reliable. Fuck raiding.

This sums up my feelings. I don't like being beholden to a schedule for gaming, so I have practically 0 interest in raiding these days. I would just flake out, so I don't bother committing.

I don't hate it, but I am no longer fond of scheduled game time so I avoid it.

I enjoy raids and raiding.

I dislike that they are perpetually the highest form of progression. I would be very happy with a game where larger raids are relatively simple and used to gear up, in order to allow you to complete the more challenging solo and small group content. I just came back to WoW largely sold on the idea that Mythic+ dungeons might sort-of deliver this; we will see.

I like raiding when it can be done in under 2 - 4 hours max. I am not really into the old school lets sit in front of my fucking PC and group up for 2 hours and raid for 6 like eq was/could be.

Being into my 30s with a family, work, and other shit to do in my life, then this resonates with me. I have done LFR in WoW mainly because I can jump in when I have time, and if something comes up I don't mind ditching the group. I could not put real friends through such shenanigans.

But what about if you had a guild that let you just show up whenever, and they would be raiding all the time. So forgetting about scheduling, did you actually enjoy the raids themselves?

Same thing for me, I like to raid but its tough with a full time and more job and then coming home to do the family thing. I prefer the shorter type of raids which last maybe 1-2 hours max and then you're done for the week.

I would say that I enjoyed it...sometimes. I always enjoyed the learning of encounters. The farming, not so much.

I don't actually enjoy raiding. Even when I had the time, being locked to a single game for several hours with people I could barely tolerate is not my idea of fun.

The social aspect can be fun. And it can be bad when the margins are so tight it brings out the worst in people.

I agree with yerm in that it doesn't have to be the pinnacle of gear progression. I think a lot less people would participate in cat herding if the gear reward wasn't there. Mythic+ serves up challenging content on a much more flexible and reasonable schedule.

Plus, there's almost rarely a game mechanic that makes me go "oh, I'd like to try this with not just 5 people, but 20+". Damage/tanking/healing meter dick waving is actually the only one I can think of. File that under best and worst of social aspect.

I like raiding because I enjoy being part of large (50+ people) communities, and raiding brings everyone together in a literal sense.

Without a reason to get together, there's no reason to form guilds and the community tends to stratifies on cliques and capability. This isn't a bad thing necessarily.

If the group content is easy or doesn't take many runs to get geared up, the hardcore population will get BiS gear and quit the game.

If the group content is hard or takes many runs to get geared up, the community will hyper-stratify based on capability where the hardcore players (40+ hours a week) will group up and tend to exclude the people who only play ~20 hours a week.

If the group content is hard, the ~20 hour a week players will have a tough time getting groups and clearing the content. The uber players will finish it all and leave in the dust.

If the group content requires many runs to get geared up, it becomes really monotonous and frustrating for the ~20 hours a week people who have to run an instances for weeks or months to get geared.

The problem to a lot of the above is having a "hard mode" in ever encounter that lets ~20 hour people get through the easy version, and lets the hardcores have a real progression.

I think the real question is if every instance had a raid and a group version, and the gear dropped and difficulty was the same, would the raid versions ever be done? I bet not. The hardcore players that would normally do all the heavy lifting in a raid would get geared in the group version, and the people riding the bandwagon would be incapable of doing either.

Enjoyment of raiding has a lot to do with the people you are doing it with. And I mean on the personality side more so than the pro-gamer side, but of course there are certain expectations that need to be met.

In all other respects... it's just a video game.

I enjoy raiding. I'm 32 with a wife, kid, mortgage. I typically ask for 2 nights a week to raid and they line up with the nights she works. Kid is in bed early enough anyways.

I think wow does it right with the 4 tiers of raiding difficulty. LFR is the scenic view, normal is introductory, heroic are the raids hard enough where certain players can't keep up and mythic are for the high level raiders.

I do get a little peeved that the game made epic (purple) gear basically drop all the time, but at this point it's whatever. Now we have legendaries then next expansion they'll drop like candy.

I really enjoy getting together with a bunch of people, especially those I consider friends, and working towards defeating encounters. I've never been a gear whore, I do it solely for the fun, and grab upgrades as they fall. Do I wish sometimes I could just skip a raid or not login or something? Sure, a schedule sucks sometimes, but I deal with it to enjoy the game with friends.

I have always hated raiding for various reasons, but do not fault those that like it. In EQ it just seemed to take for freakin' ever to actually get up and going, and then once you did it was too late in the night, but you still felt committed to it. WoW's aren't nearly as time consuming, but with the mechanics in play, they definitely take a much deeper form of cooperation and communication, thus dealing with asshats in a pick up raid. The Siege patch in MoP I think hit it just right with Timeless Isle. It gave those of us who just want to hop and do something things to do to get gear while those who loved raiding could do theirs. It sounded like that mostly went away in WoD, and not sure if something similar is back in Legion or not. I have kind of moved on from MMO's and enjoy open world and Dark Souls style games to get the itch that MMO's could only scratch.

I agree with this sentiment as you put it. What if, however, the raid version was actually slightly easier than the group? So the idea was you could choose to do the easier version at the cost of herding, or do the harder version but with the advantage of less pleb interaction. I suspect both would see use.

based on 90% of raids in WoW I'm willing to bet everyone enjoys eating cheesy poofs and letting the rest of the group get them loot.
