I work with multiple CNC machines on a regular basis, but nothing like that. Sorry. Dust is just a non issue working with metal for the most part. It eventually falls down through the grate supports and onto the standing water below it.

So, I'm gonna drop this here since it's what I'd consider "woodworking adjacent" , it's about using a CnC.

I plan on picking one up soon, probably something in the middle on size build plate range (like 20"x20"). But the real endgame for me with it won't be woodworking, it will be graphite working. Has anybody around here done work with a CnC where you had to be cognizant/in control over super fine particulate dust coming off it? I'm debating a shop-vac with a shoe for around the router bit and a bag in the shop vac, but want to make sure I get the right bags/etc to handle graphite powder as it's conductive and will right and proper screw shit up if it gets into stuff.
You need to talk to the owner of precisebits.com (think and tinker)

This guy is a master of machining anything. He loves to talk. He'll tell you what you need to know, and if you buy a few of the correct bits from him, he'll be thrilled.

That'd be a spendy piece of wood in the store.

Now those tool marks are driving me crazy. Shit looks like I need to wiggle the antenna.

Next project underway. I'm going to try glow in the dark pearl and ocean blue mica powder for the epoxy inlay.

(Also, I need a new surfacing bit, I know)

Here it is with a black background.
Black = Maple / stock
White = glow in the dark pearl resin inlay

I think 0.3in depth for the elevation band was too much. 34 hours to cnc it, and its going to take....probably......60 or 70oz of resin. But I'm going to try to make it semi opaque so it has some depth. Its taking 34 hours because of all of the 3d tool paths/ advanced vcarve. I could simplify it but I like seeing all of the peaks and ravines and small detail.

What do you think of that "hand held" CNC Router? I have used it at a trade show a few times, its quite awesome...

My work bought a CNC but then returned it (never set it up) - for space and lack of use... I told them to get one of the hand held cnc router things as it is a lot smaller (router size) and can do "CNC lite" type things...

this thing - shaper origin.

I used it when it was a cobbled together kit that looked like a normal router + bunch o stuff - then a few years later their custom made rig as it is now- each time it worked quite well and got better and better.

It's very useful if you're mostly doing small work - say 24x24 or less. They just came out with a docking system that will move it around like a small cnc so you can automate some tasks. It's slower than a typical cnc, but you can "program" on the device's screen without a PC for many simple tasks. Better buy cases of that domino locating tape it uses for spacial locating.

It's built well and works well. You're not going to want to cut out cabinets or do carvings with it. But its easy and fast to do small 2d and 2.5d stuff. Limited to 1/4" bits i believe.

Bandwagon Bandwagon wtf is the process where they smoosh the map on to their relief? It looked like from the video they’re using a different material than you, i.e. not wood, but thought it was interesting and thought of you.

That's vacuumforming. That's been around forever. Usgs put out a bunch of those maps back in the.....40s or 50s I think.

I just figured the topo would stretch and tear so it must be a special print. To be fair I just got out of surgery so am scatter brained 🙃

It definitely bends, but it doesn't tear. Its some kind of plastic that gets heated up and draped over a mold, then auctioned.

Unrelated - just poured the pearl!

At work I have adjustable tables to work with which the company provided. I also have a desk for maths and desk shit. However, the company is dragging serious ass for a work bench for my smaller jobs. What I'm currently using was actually built by a woodworker 25 years ago.

It's old, it's splintered to hell and I'm looking for something different to use that's a similar build.

74x64x24 is it's size. Length, height, depth.

Any recommendations for a work bench like this but with more practical storage and possibly built-in power strip/source. It doesn't have to be exactly like this. Looking for anything that works for smaller jobs.

Thank you!

I'm not aware of any commercially made workbenches that are in this form factor.

Your best bet is probably Sjobergs (Home - Sjöbergs) but they are pretty expensive. They are highly configurable, so you might find something that works for you.

Although building one to your specifications would be much cheaper.

Can I just say, sanding sucks ass?

I mean, I'm almost there, but holy fuck. It's a good thing I have a lot more of these to level, so I can break up the monotony.

Since everyone is giving project updates today, here's more of my adventures in cnc maps pics. Re-do on the text went pretty well, but I went a little more transparent than I should have. All that's left now is a clear top coat, clean up the edges and put the legs on.

It's the absolute worst. It's the point where I often stall out and start taking forever to finish projects, but it's also the part that makes such a massive difference in the finish. I find listening to a good audio book helps lessen the suicidal thoughts.

I heard an interview with a guy that makes high end furniture and he said that when people ask him if they should get into woodworking he just tells them that about 90% of the time he spends on a piece of furniture is sanding.
