FF14 is like going to a fancy 3 Michelin Star restaurant but the complementary bread and water is mandatory and they are very generous with it.

FFXIV has a lot of revolting weebey and cutesy shit. But calling the game unplayable is a take.
The gameplay feels engaging and fast paced at the upper end (except for the tanks). It’s pretty fun to learn ways to optimize the play style and rotation of most of the DPS and healing jobs. The daily duty system remains rewarding for most individuals but also maintains the feeling of a connected community. Plus the FFXIV community are also a lot nicer than WoW kiddies, fuck using the WoW group finder.
Lastly, and probably most important, the FFXIV devs respect their player base.

The thing that makes me laugh the most is when someone like Asmon is watching the FF trailer and sees a cat girl (who is basically human, but has cat ears instead of regular ears) and goes "ugh, furries!" and his whole chat agrees, but half the races in WoW look like they could fucking cameo on an episode of Disney's Tailspin and not be out of place.

That's because Yoshi-P is a MMO nerd that played UO, EQ and WoW, with DaoC being the longest. That is probably how he got the job with ARR to begin with.
Now contrast that with the current WoW devs. There's probably no one left at Blizzard that knows what an EverQuest is.

Different times. Furor wasn't making tens of thousands of dollars a month streaming EQ1. Furor had the option of a divorce. Asmon is like an abused spouse that can't leave the marriage because they can't support themselves if they divorce.

Haha just resubbed FF14 and they apparently have had a Torghast for a long time (Deep Dungeons), it's side content but seems super useful for levelling and I had fun doing it despite it seeming pretty simple.

Most people suspect Torghast was inspired by Deep Dungeons in FFXIV, but Blizzard's design philosophy with WoW required it take a much different design than SE's view of it. FFXIV is a lot more "alt" friendly because all your jobs/classes are on the same character, so you don't have to slog with all the same rep grinds/unlocks/etc with every single class. So having a fairly easy method of leveling those jobs makes things like Deep Dungeons useful, which is their primary purpose.
Because WoW is less alt-friendly, they chose to make it just another grind for your main.

Torghast strikes me as something nobody playtested. If anyone in QA had run that thing more than 10 times they would have told the designers that having to loot corpses for phantasma feels fucking awful. It's gonna feel even worse now that there's timers.
