  • Microsoft has reportedly ordered 50 million AMD chips for its next-generation console, the Xbox Magnus, signaling a major push to innovate in gaming hardware.
  • The Xbox Magnus will feature two models: a hybrid console combining PC functionality with console simplicity, and a standard console for traditional gaming setups.
  • The hybrid model supports a Windows-based OS, multiple storefronts like Steam, and PC peripherals, aiming to attract PC gamers and console users alike.
  • Xbox Game Pass integration enhances the Magnus’s value, offering access to a vast library of games and lowering the entry barrier for PC gaming enthusiasts.
  • The Magnus faces stiff competition from established players like PlayStation, with its success hinging on pricing, performance, and market reception.

Seems odd to just flat-out order 50million chips for a "possible" console, it just is weird and a very specific number.

Unless AMD is really hard up needing that "investment".

Once upon a time the console deals were a big deal for AMD, but small potatoes now vs. the large AI server pie that is out there now which they are starting to get pieces of. So I don't don't think AMD is "hard up" right now.

Who knows what the real numbers are - but of course Microsoft would have to give some minimum value on the guaranteed spend they will send to AMD before AMD agrees to design it.

The way that PC gaming is going....$2K-$4K per box, video card being 1/2 that price, they just might attract PC gamers if they offer a competitive product for like $800-$1000. Who knows?

There was some youtuber I was watching complaining how consoles are getting too expensive and nearing the price of PC, I was scratching my head having jsut built a pretty basic mid system for $2K.

If Sony is serious about PS6, it probably is already at or past a really early alpha design(No chips actually made yet, but they are running testing on models).

They should be almost to the stage of needing more info on custom hardware designs the console producers want.

But *shrug* count me out for either console, with even Sony now allowing first party devs to sell on Steam, I don't see the point anymore.

Were all PC gamers here for the most part, but there is tons of people that just want a plug and play "console" that jsut works. So they can plug it into their 65" TV and sit their asses on the couch and play games. I mean you can do that with PC too, no doubt, but its not as easy plus you have to deal with the whole PC thing like bugs, shit not working, have to have a KB+Mouse when not playing games... etc...

It's not super far fetched if they're trying to secure 50M chips over the lifetime of the product. Last time buy and chip EOL is a thing. AMD doesn't want to be cranking out old process chips for the duration of a console.

PCs are getting prohibitively expensive because of "AI". Give it another 5-10 years of AI driven scarcity and PCs will turn back into a "hobbyist" thing again, rather than just something basically everybody has.

And while that sounds like a fantastic return to the "old ways", understand it's because they want to force everybody on mobile devices so you're easier to track.

It is even easier to plug a PC into a TV now days then its ever been.

Some TVs are even starting to have DisplayPort and, pretty much every video card that has been produced in the past 10years has HDMI.

I'm waiting for the AI bubble too pop, someone is gonna do something that is gonna piss off the wrong group of people, and all these LLMs will be destroyed because of it.

Doesn't matter how much they piss somebody off, they can't put the LLM genie back in the bottle. They are everywhere, they're too easy to create, and too useful for a lot of things. Yes, maybe a market bubble will pop soon. But what happened to the internet when the .com bubble popped? It became bigger than ever. Same thing will happen here with AI.

Digital Foundry is putting the Machine at roughly the same power as a base PS5(less if the game is VRAM hungry), so a little disappointing.

I see someone at Valve is still married to the idea of shitty haptics and making the worst controllers devised by man. Even Nintendo couldn't come up with something as retarded as the Steam controller. At least the touchpads are separate from the dpad and right stick this time around... baby steps, I guess.
