I looked ahead at the higher ranked rogue abilities, and yeah they get to kill from concealment too. Gonna start over yet again with spec ops and rogue turned off, but that will leave me with zero phantom classes. As OP as combat concealment is, I don't see myself being able to deal with ABA better pods/bp plus without it, so I'll probably turn ranger back on but leave grenadier, specialist, and sharpshooter turned off. Wish there was a good pistolier modded class, but I haven't seen one yet.

Samurai is somewhat op on normal but it was fun to play.
Maybe I played it wrong, but my Rogue didn't stand out as anything amazing.

I'm still looking for a beard mod..

My experience with Samurai is that it's roughly on par with the ranger rebalance mod I use. Maybe worse if you consider the aim penalty on their shotgun. Unless you make a melee class basically invulnerable, they will always be inferior to ranged classes in XCom 2. I posted some screenshots a couple pages back of a lone ranger (hehe) chopping his way through half a screen full of chrysallids, and in addition to that taking two mods + manually turning on a continent bonus that is supposed to be turned off with one of those mods, I still could have done it faster and with about the same amount of risk just used ranged attacks.

I'm not sure what it is about XCOM 2, I just can't get into it like I did the original XCOM. I probably did about 10 full campaigns in the original, 4 vanilla ones then 6 or so long war campaigns. Granted I didnt finish all those long war ones, but I would be sitting there on a Saturday wondering what to play and often times XCOM popped into my head. With XCOM 2 I played it through once and that was enough, didnt even really have a desire to run through on a higher difficulty. The game is more or less the same, in many respects XCOM 2 is even a superior game, but I'm just not into it like I was the previous one. Maybe I'm just getting old.

I've had similar low interest levels after loving XCOM. I think the satellite system in the first one actually created unique tension in the early game. With XCOM 2 it's just standard base building, territory collecting, light RPG elements. Played a campaign most of the way through 5 months ago when it came out but never even finished it. Now that all the season pass DLC are out I fired up a new campaign 2 days ago. Been having fun but the repetitiveness of flying around the map scanning things, getting interrupted by the same timed events, etc. is already getting a little stale. Not sure if I'll get through this one, either.

My problem with XCOM 2 is the strategic map and how your base flies around. It's really restrictive how you have one ship moving left and right. The board game feel is perfect but this restriction is killing it for me. It would have been much better if they've adapted the worker placement kind of approach to the strategic map and gave us more options. Also, the base is boring too and techtree is too short. Having three tiers of weapons doesn't help. Everything else about the game is great. I've played like 14 campaigns four of which I've completed; three ironman and 1 was my first non ironman. All the rest of my campaigns were ironman (faster, better, more fun). Most of these campaigns I've reached almost right before the final battle but I just lose interest there since tech tree is long researched by then and all my soldiers have all their abilities unlocked and I've got all the items I wanted and the challenge just drops hard and I lose interest.

Aside from your complaint about the strategic map, you've perfectly described XCom EU/EW.

The challenge drops off at the end intentionally, so you can feel like you're winning, then you can go finish the game.

Speaking of Long War, new mod is out that changes base 4 classes into base 7 and each have three branches instead of two.

Still looking for additional faces/heads and, more importantly, beards.

Yeah they also released a pulse laser weapon tier, which I'm assuming is a complete waste of time without adjusting the entire campaign. They do look sweet as hell though.

The original lasers didn't use ammo. I'd like to see a laser like that - even if it only recharged over time.

This thread is really keeping me from playing the base game. For now, I'll be waiting for the Long War equivalent.

The base game is perfectly playable.

Yeah, the base game is totally fine, and I would recommend at least one play through of it. I personally put 100 hours in (kinda surprised it's that high but I probably went to bed with the game running a couple of times). I'm just not feeling like running another campaign, but I for sure enjoyed my first run through. I'm starting a second one now with the new DLC, and as it seems there is progress being made on the long war mod front I'll probably start a third play through once those are done.

If this was the Total War:Warhammer or The Division threads I would understand, but this is the Xcom2 thread - the game is more than playable and already has a thriving and fully-supported mod community that has covered some of the more questionable design decisions. The steam workshop alone adds about $20 worth of content alone with new classes, map generation seeds/plots, game alterations, etc. If you want to wait for a price drop then okay, but any implication that this game isn't worth playing as is would be flat wrong.

Game isn't perfect, but it certainly delivers and this video still captures the fun I have with it when starting a new campaign.

Yeah definitely agreed. Any lamenting for a Long War for X2 is simply re: staying power and expanded scope. Game is just fine and well worth even full price. I eagerly await their assumed expansion re: TftD or w/e they were alluding to at the end.

Oh god that would be glorious. I wouldn't even care that it's silly and doesn't fit. Shit, my roster is populated completely with characters from my favorite shows, and Futurama is one of them!

Speaking of, is anyone aware of any good show-related voice pack mods? I have Zapp Brannigan, but I'd love more from Sunny in Philly, Futurama, Simpsons, Family Guy, Rick and Morty, Archer... anything really. I may even just make my own, it doesn't seem too hard.

Only significant Futurama characters still missing at this point are Amy and the Professor. I use Futurama, Durand, Zhang, a couple from Mass Effect, and Rex Colt.
