Damn. I'll be 51 this year and my dad died about a month after his 51st birthday. So I've been worrying about that all year. But at least my mom is still going and all the grandparents I know about lived to at least 88.

This has become a pretty regular part of the morbid calculus for me. Since I have a spreadsheet planning out retirement needs, and it has a cell in it for "how long do I REALLY plan on living??"
Raised by my grandparents. Lost my grandfather in 97, he was 78. Lost my grandmother in 2010 at 88. Helping take care of my 74 year old mother now who is in decline (but has also lived a "rode hard and put up wet" biker/honky tonk lifestyle until she just couldn't any more in her 50's). So I figure myself for probably getting to the low 80's. Meaning I have to deal with you jackwagons for another quarter of a damn century....

Thor was 6'3" 185 lbs when he was ripped. You aren't lean at 6'0" 230. You can probably afford to lose at least 40 lbs. At that weight you roll in at an american "eh you aren't really that fat". You conflate obese with morbidly obese. You're at least below walmart american.

Bodyfat % would make a lot more sense as a metric than BMI, but bodyfat is notoriously hard to measure and since most people don't have any appreciable muscle mass, it works fine. BMI sucks for people who have added a fair bit of muscle mass.
Just be lean and don't care what the numbers say, if you have a belly, man tits or love handles, lose weight until you don't. The end.

I'm 6'4" and 230, I've been told by doctors that I'm considered obese. When I raced mountain bikes the lowest I ever was as an adult was 218. That was with literally no upper body at all and no gut. I think I could get down to 210 if I wanted to appear as a zombie in a movie.
As an aside your heart has increased strain when you are really thick even if you are fit. It's worse if it's all fat of course but it still has to pump harder to get to all that mass.

Christopher Reeve was 6'4, 210lbs when superman was shot. He had to gain 30+ pounds for the role. You certainly would not look like a zombie at that weight sir.

You’re correct, the cardiovascular system does have to work harder. I don’t plan to do this past 60 and I’ve never taken gear (never will) so I’m trying to be clean about it.
I don’t compete, I just do this for me and for my wife. I could cut to 215, but I would be hangry a lot. Every body is different. I happen to be lucky that I’m dense and not like extra large.

BMI is not meant for individuals, it's a population level thing. Also, the data points captured for the initial study to come up w/ the numbers was a pretty restricted group. Like thin white dudes ages 20 to 35 or something,
