So I just turned 57, and have noticed a sharp decline in my vision. I'm not sure if it's coincidence but I have also been recently prescribed metformin. Anyone else in the same boat?
I'm 50 and I take 2000mg of Metformin and haven't noticed a change in my eyesight since starting it.

My dad has diabetes, so I know quite a bit about it. Others have chimed in with true statements as well, but thought I'd point out that if my dad's A1c gets too high, his eyesight gets worse. If he brings it back down, his vision gets better. I don't know the medical reason for that, but the doctor told him that's extremely common, and yet another reason to keep the numbers in check.

Also, it is not true that the numbness happens in the extremeties first, it is just the smallest blood vessels that go first. One of the first indicators are the tiny blood vessels in the back of the eye bursting, which is why diabetics have to go in at least once a year to have them checked. Furthermore, plenty of diabetics get numbness in random spots, not just the fingers and toes. A guy at work has a kneecap which is completely numb, and he's had Type I almost his entire life.

That being said, I'm 56 and the past 5 years have seen a substantial decline in my vision. It happens, we get old and our eyes start to suck as Haus said.

So, while I'm not really sure of all the side-effects of Metformin, it is most likely not the medication itself that is causing it. It is probably your age, but it could also be higher than normal blood sugar.

I let my blood sugar get up to 350 last year. I think the a1c was 9.6. My eyesight took a nosedive. I started using readers and had most of my glasses swapped out to bifocals. I even added magnification to some of my shooting glasses. I also started metformin at the same time. It would be easy to blame it on the metformin, but I knew it was the blood sugar. Today I only use the readers when I'm tired and I wish I hadn't added bifoclas and magnification to any of my regular glasses.

In short, you probably started metformin because your sugars were getting high and that's what caused your eyesight to go to shit. Masturbate more and get your numbers down and the eyesight might get better. It worked for me.

Kinda seemed like the guy just couldn't hear the judge, which is more common than you would think for judges in courtrooms since their mic/computer setups are often not optimized for zoom.

I still don't need reading glasses but I can tell my distance vision isn't as good as it used to be. I think I'm one of the only ones in my office that doesn't go around with readers around their neck the entire day though. I think I'll finally start to feel old when I have to keep glasses with me, I have never had to wear glasses, ever. I might be fighting it harder because of that.
just do this trick, turn on your phone camera and read from that!

Hah I have done that for like super tiny text on bottles or something, but I still see 20/25 or so. I used to have more like 20/15 in my left (dominant) eye and I can tell its getting worse but still ok.

High blood sugar affects vision. Your eyes literally get tears that bleed. If you have an optometrist with modern equipment, you can actually see the bleeds. Metformin is a 'betus medicine.

I been a type 1 diabetic for a few decades now. If its high blood sugar the hazyness in the eyes is unprocessed sugar in your blood slowly being deposited in your eyes. This is mainly due to the muscles in your eyes not being very intense and doesn't go thru that much energy and couple that with higher blood sugars you start to get a thin layer of sugar you have to look thru on your lens. If consistent over time it crystallizes and now you can't see no more.

In short, cut out carbs and hike up protein intake, and hit the treadmill. Take the medicine if above isn't doable.

Thanks, I also have been told diabetes can affect the smaller blood vessels particularly in the eyes which has got me concerned/paranoid. Hoping its just age.
It is a condition called Diabetic Retinopathy, I am diabetic and have it, generally if you go see an optometrist and tell them you have diabetes they will likely check your eyes for that issue.

Side note on metformin, anyone else find the pills stink like hell? My wife thinks they are probably coated in fish oil to ease digestion.

I can't speak to the Metformin, but I have noticed even shit like the 800mg Ibuprofen I was getting after shoulder surgery a few years back would smell fucking nasty from the pharmacy, yet the bottle of 200mg you can buy over the counter smells pretty much like nothing.

I can't really explain the smell either. At least if they smelled like shit I could blame it on the 98% street shitters that work in the pharmacy at CVS.

Weird. My Metformin pills are manufactured by Precision and have no odor. They're not coated though.

It wasn't fun when I started the pills. My gut became a war zone getting used to the high dose. Thankfully I was working from home at the time. Dear lord.

talk to your pharmacist is you don't like your pills, they might be about to source a different brand. also applies if you get a new drug that isn't working or causes minor side effects. key ingredients can be from totally different sources. also, if doc is prescribing a high end brand name drug that you have big copay on, ask if they have samples.

I have no issues taking it, but one of the known side affects is getting the shits from time to time which I can attest to.
