So I just turned 57, and have noticed a sharp decline in my vision. I'm not sure if it's coincidence but I have also been recently prescribed metformin. Anyone else in the same boat?
My dad has diabetes, so I know quite a bit about it. Others have chimed in with true statements as well, but thought I'd point out that if my dad's A1c gets too high, his eyesight gets worse. If he brings it back down, his vision gets better. I don't know the medical reason for that, but the doctor told him that's extremely common, and yet another reason to keep the numbers in check.
Also, it is not true that the numbness happens in the extremeties first, it is just the smallest blood vessels that go first. One of the first indicators are the tiny blood vessels in the back of the eye bursting, which is why diabetics have to go in at least once a year to have them checked. Furthermore, plenty of diabetics get numbness in random spots, not just the fingers and toes. A guy at work has a kneecap which is completely numb, and he's had Type I almost his entire life.
That being said, I'm 56 and the past 5 years have seen a substantial decline in my vision. It happens, we get old and our eyes start to suck as Haus said.
So, while I'm not really sure of all the side-effects of Metformin, it is most likely not the medication itself that is causing it. It is probably your age, but it could also be higher than normal blood sugar.
