That's what these are for. Just make sure you have 2 or more in case you drop your grabber. I initially got one to pick up brass at the range. But I found myself constantly getting it to pick up some shit that fell slightly under a table or chair. So now I have at least 5.

Ride through suburb of where you grew up. Stop at 5 way stop with lights, lanes everywhere. I wasn't driving. Say shit like "In high shool on my 15th birthday I took my drivers license test right here when it was a blinking yellow and blinking red. Came here because it was so quiet.

40 years ago, I'm old. They moved the DMV I can't imagine going through that shit as a new driver.

I'm so old that after I got my license, they did away with the road test requirement, and have brought it back again since then.

Edit to add: I was originally going to respond that Tx doesn't require a road test anymore, but I decided to double check first. That's when I found out it was reinstated.

Doesn’t seem like anyone takes that test though. Crap drivers outnumber good ones by a scary amount.

Yeah well, apparently if you're over 25 you don't have to do it. I'm sure most of the bad drivers are adult immigrants.

When we moved to Alaska and got licenses there, the wifey failed her written test 4 times. Like yeah there's bullshit 'how many points' questions, but just read the tiny booklet.

A while back I had an issue. My license had expired, but I was super busy with work and other nonsense so I didn't even think about it. It was expired long enough I had to go retake the damn drivers test.

I go take the stupid classroom test portion, realized you just need to pick the most conservative answer for every question. Then it was time for the driving test. I go get in the car, the woman comes out to do the test. She has me pull out onto an adjacent street, go through a traffic light, make a left hand turn, drive around a residential block and back to the DMV. Pulling up I ask, "Now, where do I do the parallel parking part?"

She looked at my like I'd opened my mouth and something funny had jumped out.

"We have some cones in back if you really want to, but we haven't required that in a long time...."

Both my kids took the driving test and both of them had to do parallel parking in Texas/DFW.

This says parallel parking is still on the test.

Guess either I was lucky, or that changed back less than 10 years ago... Maybe the girl giving the test was just blinded by my charm. I just found it odd. Or she realized putting a guy in his 40's who had obviously been driving his whole life through the test was nonsense.

I didn't have to parallel park on my test in texas. I avoided parallel parking like the plague because of it.

Then I went to europe and quickly learned how to master it. I feel like these cameras now adays are cheating.

I'm so old the age to drive was 15 and drink 18. Driving test was pull the car onto the road, drive a mile down the road, pull into a giant wharehouse and turn around in the parking lot and go back. 10 minutes or less. Only so many places to go.

My car was a hand me down drag car. Cluthed automatic. The lady giving the test looked about 80, she goes "well that's different".

I didn't either, there was no place that required it nearby. The only place that had it growing up was a few streets downtown around the capital. Out where people lived, not so much.

Had a manual transmission drivers ed car at 14. Nowdays it's the best theft deterent your car can have.

when i was in high school, in 9th grade PE class, everyone took driver's ed. iirc, it was less than 2 weeks. i really only remember a couple things about it. it was a long walk in the cold out to the driving range, there was a mouse and we watched some black and white films from a projector. in 10th grade PE class, you and 2 other people got to drive for a week. day 1-2, had 2 cars going around the driving range. days 3-5. each person would drive around town for about 20 mins each day, so about an hour in total.

my understanding the high school no longer does it, but can pay for the class and get out of PE to take it. this is what the website says the current requirements are.
36 fifty-minute classroom periods of instructions
14 fifty-minute periods in-car instructions (7 periods of driving and 7 periods of observation, including the final road skills examination)

think can wait till you are 18, take the written and driving test without classroom. can also get out of the driving test is adult signs off that you have drove 45 hours or more.

I don't think I've ever heard of a clutched automatic unless that's what paddle shifters are.

During Driver's Ed I was perfect at parallel parking. Day of the driving test, the trooper asked me how my parallel parking was and I said excellent. So he went, great, it's free now, lets get it out of the way before the road test. I hit the curb. The only time I'd ever fucked it up. As I pulled out, he said, ok before pulling out onto the road I want you to put it in park. I was confused but I did it. Then he asked if I was OK. Apparently I was taking a lot of deep breaths and he was concerned. He let me know it wasn't a huge deduction. Since I didn't hit the cones I didn't fail. It's going to be allright.

Anyway, that was my only deduction and I haven't parallel parked since. The only way I will get into a parallel parking spot is if there are 2 in a row free and I can just pull into it.
