YouTube's War on Ad Blockers

I'd be shocked if they can touch Firefox. They said the same shit a year ago, and there were 1 or 2 blips for everyone here then back to business as usual.

They'll need to redouble their efforts-- remaining skeptical based on their track record. The excuse last time for them not following through after their announcement was "it's regional rollout for testing" so not every region is affected.

I'm starting to believe they just can't fingerprint existing accounts that never re-log back in. That seemed to be a big trigger for FOH members here who had issues with Firefox last year. I never log in or out, never clear cashe or cookies, and I've never seen a disruption in blocking.

I think there is going to be a unified resistance against it. I could see this being a modern issue that brings people together to fight back (In a weird way).

This is just the last of manifest V2 being removed. Yes, it nerfs ad blockers, but it does not block them. uBlock Orign Lite is manifest v3 and while it isn't as good as the original, it gets the job done.

Still shitty, but the "OMFG! No more ad blockers on Crome!" is pure hyperbole.
They actually did me a favor by forcing me to use Brave. Not being logged into my account prevents me from posting comments, so I don't even look at them anymore.

I'm not using Chrome, but if you think they aren't going to try and completely remove all ad blockers from service you are out of your mind. Look what's going on with private servers, the hammer is coming, they've squeezed all the money from us and the only way to continue to increase profits is by forcing ads on people (And propaganda likely).

And Twitch laid the blueprint that you can take adblock to war and win.

They defeated 3-4 different iterations as block methods kept trying to adapt. Twitch won in the end.

I guess I stop watching YouTube? Who cares?

But what I do know - Im gonna keep using the browser that has had exactly zero problems with any of it right up until that point.

It's not just youtube, it's going to be a battleground for all things browser related. I hope they give up, I think they will but it might suck for awhile.

I still have the original ublock installed on Vivaldi, but I wonder what will happen when I have to reinstall at some point.

Turns out you can just stop.

Let's face it man. We've been on the Internet for 30 years. Ain't nothing we ain't seen. If YouTube goes tits up tomorrow, I'll just turn it off and walk away. Just like I did with cable. Just like I did with broadcast TV. There's nothing you need there. Just quick dopamine hits and click bait bullshit.

UBO vaft script works amazingly well on Twitch. They didn't win shit.

They beat custom uBlock which was the gold standard at the time. 3-4 iterations of Twitch to wear everyone out.

About a 2 year battle.

That's great UBO worked out after a few years. The majority couldn't be bothered after the 3rd time UBO got taken out. I still have no interest in adding the latest script. The first time was ok, the 2nd time was pushing it, 3rd time, I'm out. Over time they can wear people down and they will just abandon product rather than continue to support it.

They won in the sense that 90% of UBO's just moved on to ad-free product offerings or places where they don't need to add the latest script when Twitch pushes a new update.

The large majority of us can't be assed with that shit anymore. I don't personally give a fuck about Twitch that much where I'm going to keep adding a script to UBO every time Twitch says jump. And neither did anyone else. Check the views post adblock war. All down.

That's what happened with Twitch.

Yeah, you could keep adding new scripts each time Twitch pushes an update and call that "winning" I guess.

That's like a corporation saying "Hey jump" and a faggot responding "how high?" though. One or two times, alright. 4-5 times, get the fuck out of here.

They overestimate how many people care about their product. Some will jump through every hoop, but the large majority of people, even in the target demographic, don't give a fuck.
