Facebook Theories (Why everyone I know likes it but me)

I'm not on facebook, never have been. The reactions you get when someone asks to add them or say "I've looked for you on facebook, never found you," are great. Some people are actually dumbfounded sometimes.

I do work with a lot of people younger than me. If I ever go to the bar with them, I wind up dodging snapchats and "group selfies."

God I'd love to ditch FB but most of my friends and family use it so much I am pretty much forced to. I have many family members, and lots of friends living abroad, and FB is pretty much the only way *they* want to communicate. Also, most of my friends chat and organise meetups/events via FB so if I am not part of that then I would miss out.

Makes me sad :(

Same situation as valorath. I'll have someone tell me Every now and then I should have a FB page. My reply is always that I graduated from high school a long time ago.

Most of the people that want me on Facebook, are the ones I don't really want to associate.

So I don't have an account.

Events, messenger, and keeping tabs on family I would otherwise only see once every couple of years. I've made liberal use of the unfollow button for people that annoy me, but I see regularly enough that they'd get butt mad I unfriended (hides their internet diarrhea, doesn't let them know I did it).

Just delete the account and be done with it.
It is amazing what a positive impact this tiny little step has on your life. I deleted mine about 3-4 years ago. Its probably the best decision I've made in the last 4 years. All of a sudden, you're just completely free from the facebook idiocy. It disappears and never bothers you again.

If only I could convince my wife to delete hers. Anyone ever succeed at that?

LMAO, good one, I'm certain it might rustle some feathers hehe. How do people react to that?
I get dumbfounded looks as if I said I live in a cave or slapped them in the face.

In all seriousness though. this seems like a quite a difficult to deal with generational gap. In my experience with my own kids, I have noticed that in general old(er) people have a few more different *old school* communication skills and are better at coping with peer pressure, where as the younger ones *feel stuck* without even seeing them for fear of rejection or *loosing* a friend or family member. My childrens' friends have trouble living without having these glowing neon signs everywhere around them, but my kids are learning to sees social media more and more as just an extra way of communicating on top of other more valuable and viable first choice options. Same with cell phones.

Me I just avoid it as personal choice.....BUT I sympathize with others who have difficulty, definitely tough to avoid the pull. Shelly Turkle has done some interesting extremely interesting research on this topic.

Agreed, anyone else notice a pattern here. We pretty much as a group are not retarded and don't use Facebook. I swear everyone I know who uses it regularly has a twisted view of the world and is functionally turning into a retard.

So some of us move quite a bit and have friends and family that do also. Mainly talking about military. Facebook allows me to see how they are doing and where they are now. We talk every so often and then when we are stationed together again in the future we can pick right up where we left off.

We also do a lot of networking for jobs.

I don't know how other people use it because to me everyone else is fairly toxic on it.

The people who loudly proclaim they are anti-establishment enough to ditch facebook are as annoying to me as the people who are upset by others not using facebook.

I figure most people in this community view facebook as just another social website and not some unique thing.

Facebook is what you make of it, if you have interesting friends who post interesting (to you) shit, then it'll be interesting... if you have a bunch of shitposting asshole friends facebook will be super annoying. If you're one of those people who think people who live "ordinary" lives are boring and they need to break out of their mindless suburban consumer-driven lives... you probably won't like facebook.

Basically, if you're an antisocial hipster faggot, you will probably hate facebook. Otherwise facebook will probably reflect your friends, who you hopefully like. If not, defriend a bunch of people until it gets better. Or just don't use it? But why do you care if others do?

I've gotten increasingly tired of Facebook lately. I put myself into super hide mode or whatever. But I still use the Facebook messenger app a lot to contact people. Which is very useful as a lot of my BASE/Skydiving friends live outside the US or in vans and shit and I don't have their phone numbers anyway. Same with a lot of my old Army compadres.

Other than that its shit. As I have my redneck ass siblings and family in BFE Oregon, idiot skydiving friends, and occasional other dribble. Its only awesome to look at in small doses.

So... for keeping up with far flung friends social media is useful. But for all other things it's shit.

Got it

That's all I really use it for these days is all I am saying. Maybe calling it shit was bad phrasing.

No the irony was that keeping up with far flung friends is pretty much exactly what it is designed and used for by most people, so you actually are a common case.

Well, I don't use it to read the damn newsfeed is what I actually am trying to say. As I don't enjoy most of the postings my acquaintances like to put on there. The chat feature is plenty.

It just feeds peoples egos and narcissism IMHO.
Do you want facebook *friends* or friends you spend time with and do things with?

This. I haven't had one since about 2007 because like swag, I don't really care what anyone is up to and if I do, I'll text them. My wife also hates facebook, yet is completely unable to detach from it. It's basically just a mechanism for her to make snarky comments about people she vaguely knows and look at pictures of her friends kids. I've commented like 50 times how I don't understand why you'd Facebook Friend someone you A) don't know or B) loathe, she just says "That's how facebook works".

IDK, man. Shit's gay.

I remeber when facebook required me to use an .edu email to register and allowed me to add by cpurses with sections to it. Useful for you know, college. Now, I have one that no one can see because work keeps telling me chinamen are trying to friend me and spy on me for super gubernment secretz.
