Yep. The original manga had a lot more humor alongside the more serious aspects. The movie was just so successful that adaptations after that kept closer to it in tone. The original manga is pretty short, only 10 chapters or so. If you end up liking this version of the anime it's worth a read.

First episode of the Ghost in the Shell reboot was great. They're faithfully animating the original manga this time around.
