I think you're being a little too hard on yourself. To me, this sounds more like a planning problem than an organization problem on your part. Your boss might mean well, but constantly throwing unplanned work at you without taking anything else off your plate just isn't sustainable. And you're...

Kinda neat -- all this stuff works perfectly in Linux.

AI: The Rise of the Machines... Or Just a Lot of Overhyped Chatbots?

Haven't seen any mods that add companion content like new story and voice lines. Nothing stops someone from making one, but it'd still be a lot of work even with AI help. If you're thinking new areas, you'd still have to build the environments in Larian's toolkit, and that tool isn't very...

AI: The Rise of the Machines... Or Just a Lot of Overhyped Chatbots?

I've been creating BG3 mods. I'm trying my hand at crafting outfits but this requires Blender. There is a MCP for this and it all works but the output is pretty meh. Not sure if there are any skills to improve this or I just need to wait a couple more months...

Well, I did it: upgrading to Claude Max. Opus 5.5 is just too damn good.

I enjoy learning new shit that I'm interested in, but absolutely despise studying for these certs. I have a work goal to take the simple GH-300 exam this year. Been dragging my feet preparing for it.

Aniara (2018) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7589524 Man, if you want to watch a depressing ass movie, watch this. I thought it was pretty good, but it definitely requires a certain taste. It’s based on a 1950s poem about a big transport spaceship that gets knocked off course. Passengers get...

I agree that someone needs to have a deeper understanding of these things. I just don't think every developer needs that same depth of knowledge anymore. The people who have the interest and the mind for it will still dig into how everything works. That expertise still has value, but I think AI...

As I mentioned previously, we write drivers for various handheld devices, which requires a lot of manual testing. Upper management made the brilliant move of letting go of most of our local manual testers in favor of Indian contractors over in Mumbai, and favoring the local coding testers. Boy...

Fair point on tradeoffs, and I agree there's no free lunch. But people made this same argument about compilers, and again when IDEs started auto-completing everything. I don't think the 'click' goes away. It just shows up on different problems. Less often it's "oh, that's how this syntax works"...

You still have to get good at using the thing. At work, the split is pretty obvious. The people who’ve actually sat down and learned how to use AI get very different results from the people who still treat it like a chatbot. Same tool, but the output is night and day. The learning hasn’t...

The model-kit feeling is real, and it is fine as a reason to like the work. It is a bad standard for whether the work is going well. The job is to ship software that behaves correctly and can still be changed later. “Write a bunch of stuff, press run, look, it goes” is how you find out that a...

I find this attitude bizarre. For me it is the opposite. This is exciting. My mind keeps turning over things I could build, because nearly anything I can think of is now possible. Do you enjoy coding for the sake of coding, rather than for what you are actually creating?

What I find curious is developers loudly advertising, “I didn’t use AI for this project!” Which has me thinking, okay, you’re an idiot? It’s kind of like, “Look at me, I built this house without power tools. It took me 30 times longer, and the construction is shoddy. Go me!”

I like Maximilian Schwarzmuller. I've bought several of his videos on various subjects over the years on Udemy. https://www.youtube.com/@maximilian-schwarzmueller/videos He mentions an upcoming course on AI development workflow. Might want to consider registering.

That's kinda the thing, dude -- this is all changing so rapidly that we're all still trying to figure out how to use it efficiently. The only real recommendation I can make is to immerse yourself in it and practice using it. What we're doing today could look radically different a year from now.

Same here. I don't use "Plan" mode or really any mode other than Full Access / YOLO. The plan is the Markdown document generated from the investigation. The point is to have a "hard copy" that the agent can follow rather than relying on its memory of the earlier conversation. Keep in mind that...

This is similar to how I work, except that I do not work inside the chat session entirely itself. I work in several phases, and each phase produces a durable Markdown document: - Pull the ticket or user story from ADO. This writes a `story.md`, which I then review. - Initiate an investigation...

Got a cold email today about a full-time contract grading coding-agent work for a frontier lab. Remote US, $150/hour, 40 hours a wee for 6 months. The work is reading agent transcripts and pull requests all day, which patch is actually better, which tests are game-able, what the diff really...

I remember back in my night community college classes there was a group of students from the DRC. They were well dressed and groomed. Good students. Quite the opposite from the local African Americans with their pants halfway down their ass.

I mean, this sounds exactly like every other legacy system that already exists. We maintain an ancient ASP.NET WebForms app that started in the early .NET 2 days. Over the years people dumped in different third-party frameworks, flipped patterns every couple of years, and nobody ever cleaned the...

We write device drivers to interface third-party physical devices with our software. Unit testing can only take you so far, especially when the vendor's spec documentation is often WRONG. It makes the process extremely labor intensive and honestly makes me wonder why we're still in this business.

I'm on SuperGrok ($30/month) because that gives you access to Build. Unless they changed it, you don't get access to the CLI tool with the basic subscription.

Grok is a big boy. I have subs to all three (OpenAI, Anthropic, and X), and Grok is equally capable.
