Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

Why not? Pretty much every one of these games made are basically niche now anyway aside from WOW. Until I actually see something of substance, I actually do expect s38 to be another one of those. Yeah Curt is shooting for some WOW dethroning and he has some heavy hitters in his corner, but the...

Eh, I don"t think people are really attacking the talent at s38, just whether they can actually get it done. I give Curt a pass at the moment simply because it is too early to say otherwise. I did the same with Brad, until I started seeing what he was actually making at VG, then I gave him hell.

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

It really isn"t true, and I am probably going over a topic we might have discussed 4,563 pages ago in this thread. The bulk of the people who play WOW really are playing it for the game, not because of a lack of alternatives. WOW INCREASED the game space when it came out. This is a point many...

Oh come on, you really think the vast majority of the MMO players would switch games over a few dollars per month? The monthly cost really isn"t an issue with these games, it is the product itself. Produce a somewhat polished game (it really doesn"t have to be perfect as some might want), with...

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

Nah, not true. The interest built off it"s battlenet products, despite what others might say. Kiddies wanted to blast each other in a MMO setting instead of the B-net format. No argument here, however, that S38 has a tough nut to crack but they are committed to a fantasy MMO, so that"s it.

    That is an excellent point.

If they did revamp LOTRO away from it"s niche to a more pvp type game, yeah I might give it another look because it in essence becomes a completely different, and hence new, game. And you are right regarding a completely new IP, they really do only get one shot at it.
  8. M

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

That really isn"t a fair comparison, since you are comparing a basically pvp (with pve option) game to a basically pve game. LOTRO, simply went niche. I said it before, people wanted to play Sauron"s minions vs. rohan"s horsemen. They didn"t get that. Gameplay will always be the most decisive...

Back in the "EQ days" you had at most 400-500k tops playing. So, yeah, you remember names better since it was a smaller playerbase.

I really hate people who can"t spell a simple word like "what" correctly. Really, I do.

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

Well aside from looting the people you kill, you still have full fledged pvp on pvp servers. Sure the real loot is in the instances so that is where most level capped people go, but do you really want to bring back the whole "camping" thing again in games?

I submit lag has a lot to do with the rise of instancing too by keeping the numbers on screen down to a manageable level.

There a reason why you made me use a magnifying glass to read your post? ;p
  15. M

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

Nah, I disagree. I think it is more of a function of time commitment to the game. I am sure you have your nuts who play 24/7, but I would think the vast majority are not your "hardcore." Brad thought there was this large "hardcore" market out there too. There just isn"t. And that actually is a...

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

Actually that is a strong possibility that WOW replaces itself (or increases the gaming space more) with another product based off Starcraft (a non-fantasy game too).
  17. M

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

Well to be honest I wouldn"t mind something fresh too. But at this point I just view these new games as new content that I don"t get from WOW.

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

You acknowledge how ridiculous it would be, yet you still say it. Based on what we know, it is absolutely silly to even make the assertion. Yet you still do it. EQ thought that it would always remain "king of the hill" at one point too. They (I forget exactly who) even posted saying how...

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

By "establishing an IP" I would define it as producing other things besides the MMO, such as consol/pc games. Doing so is cheaper, quicker, there is always a market for them, you can actually make millions off them and *gasp* help meet payroll, and you begin to create an interest. Of course...

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

Why are you giving the man business advice when you are absolutely clueless about even running or creating a major multi-million dollar one? While I agree about trying to build up an IP before a MMO launch through console/pc games (which I argued earlier in this thread), it is not impossible...

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

    1) Nope. Mainly for the reason you said in point 2). 2) See 1 above. 3) I don"t think to as large a degree. Sure people meet people online tons of times. But in the end the majority still remain anonymous to each other. People may follow initially to try something new, but if they don"t...

Some priceless quotes by Curt. Hate him as a ballplayer (Cardinal fan ;p), liking him as a person. Praying he delivers.

My biggest concern is the ability to update the game as time progresses. I really do get tired of hearing "sorry but the spaghetti coding can"t do that." In WOW, for example, they made a great feature called Battlegrounds, but apparently they can"t easily create random new map variants. At least...

Oh give me a break. You know damn well neither Brad nor Jeff has ever written anything of serious quality. And don"t give me some lame meaningless Eq expansion as an example. True talent wins out in the long run and neither had it, aside from ego.
  28. M

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

Well my hope with studio38 is that they do have a quality author in RA to at least help create a good story. With VG you basically had Brad and Jeff creating a story that, I am sorry, they simply were never qualified to make. So in the end, true talent imo proves important, regardless of...

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

Well considering your product (nuclear aircraft carriers), I would hope so. But despite all this buzz word discussing on how to set up a MMO production "model" it all still means nothing if the game just plumb sucks. And to be honest that is all I as a consumer really care about.

Well can be a bitch not getting that "last hurrah" in, but fortunately it isn"t a life shortening or permanently debilitating injury. On a positive note, he can now devote 100 pct of his time to this venture and get a solid product out.

I wouldn"t ignore the impact of wage disparity and tariff laws/foreign country subsidizing of their particular industries.

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

Not to be the Negative Nancy, but it will still come down to whether the actual game sucks or not. Hoping it doesn"t, since competition is good, but the market can be so fickle and unforgiving.

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

Well you kind of lost me now with this. What you are describing is good management which any company would want I suppose. But I had a different vision concerning QA. Yeah keeping the project "moving" is good, but making sure that project is "polished" and entertaining is what I envisioned the...

Please oh please hire plenty of coders. I refuse to play another game where you are told that the coding can"t handle change "such and such."

Nothing to rant about yet ;p
  37. M

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

Oh don"t get me wrong, I absolutely like the pvp/pve type game. But seriously, if WOW did away with all the pvp, I would be gone since Blizzard really is way too slow with the expansions to keep my "pve" interest going.
  38. M

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

I"ll toss in the most important date for you. When WOW was released with all those, umm, pvp servers filling up. The PVE ones did too. I went pve first simply to see the content without the griefing. Then got bored and restarted on a PVP one. Was having a blast until they came out with honor for...
  39. M

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

I"m pretty sure it would have been the PVP one. And if WOW was a strictly PVE game its subs would have dropped a ton, once the charm wore off. Speculation on anyone"s part of course. But that"s what you have to go through when trying to predict the future.
  40. M

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

Ok, good, so now you at least acknowledge the possibity that half of WOW is pvp focused using the pvp servers as indication (logging into wow and checking the server types and population size). Yet you assume the other is pure pve which I submit is not, except maybe the wussy RP servers. You...
