    Rift: Planes of Telara

Rift is a good mmo to start with. They cover most of the bases and it's has a very healthy population. Another good game is Guild Wars 2, it's a bit different from most mmos and very popular. EvE is spaced based mmo, heavy into PvP. It is very different than most mmos and also quite popular...

I wish some devs had the balls to try it. Never experienced that and wish I had. Every mmo gaming experience since EQ has been a letdown. A lowering of the bar, a reset to something less than what was before. There have been improvements in the mmo sphere, but they have been at the cost of...

Yeah, there is something to be said for FFA open world mobs. It's a gaming element that was never really explored enough in other mmos (and unintended consequences in EQ). But it was awesome. Every server dealt with it in different ways. Most had rotations, even our server did for a very...

Nah, been a PvPer since DAoC. It was just in EQ that I had no clue about mmo PvP. DAoC and other games changed that. Still with my DAoC guild griefing players to this day. edit: EQ classic had a sort of PvP on some raid FFA servers. Guild vs Guild griefing at the endgame. Pulling whole zones...

Didn't PvP back in the EQ days, was a Doom/Quake PvP addict and thought PvP in a game like EQ was lame. I also had no idea how to PvP in a mmo back then. But since then mmo PvP has become a kind of holy grail for many players, myself included. Even though the twitch skill is minimal, the set...

Just have to say, I love all this speculation so far from August. There is a lot of pent up feeling for EQ, good and bad, the next couple of months are going to be an interesting ride. I hope it's a good one but even if it sucks, there will be DRAMA.

There was plenty to do in EQ classic for solo players, it was just much more efficient and rewarding to group. And grouping opened up much more content. Which is the way it should be. The problem with modern games is there isn't any reason to group except for instanced dungeon runs (and the...

Take the original EQ (not Luclin) models, upgrade them with higher poly counts and then work from there. That isn't Rift. WoW's art style is.

False. We're not talking about ultra realism here, we're talking about not looking like a fucking Saturday morning cartoon. Plenty of FPS games have "realistic" graphics and do just fine. As do many rpg's like Oblivion, etc. It's a matter of proportions. Having huge shoulder armor and...

The guy is a good artist but his style is too cartoonish WoW-like for EQ. Keith Parkinson set a more realistic tone and it was perfect. It sucks that the powers that be at SoE are philistines. If the game looks like that art piece then they should just rename the game to EQWoW.

I loved the original EQ character design (except for the human bucket helms). It was low poly for sure but every race looked different. They didn't have that boring "everyone is super powered muscle bound hero" look. And the animations were awesome. The luclin models improved the humans (and...

It depends on your playstyle for LoTRO. I like to do the achievements, etc and have a couple of toons, so getting the needed points isnt' that bad. It just happens. And they have made some of the zones free that they use to charge for a couple years ago. Anyways, I found LoTRO's shop to be very...

Well that's subjective. Although I've never made it to the endgame, I do play LoTRO off and on and enjoy it. It reminds me of EQ for some reason, more so than other mmos anyways. Their community is very much like EQ's, much more social, etc. I like their version of FTP too, it's kind of a combo...

Considering the amount of money the fashion industry generates I'm surprised that there isn't a mmo that doesn't take more advantage of it. Then again most gaming devs and gamers (yep me too) are fashionless geeks so I suppose it makes sense.

I agree for the most part but xp potions do nothing but get a player to the endgame faster. Which is why I never use them. I prefer the leveling game more than most mmo's endgames. Racing to get to a grind of dailies and instanced dungeon runs seems kind lame. But if racing to the endgame is...

I can understand the desire for a sub over F2P, but it's just another thing that is going the way of the dinosaur. It's a highly competitive market and the F2P model is winning. Even WoW is being forced to change. The best option is to just make sure that the mmos have good shops. XP potions are...

I don't give a fuck if someone has more time than me to play. It's their life they can spend their time as they want. Just used that example to refute the notion that buying xp potions is P2W. Complaining about one or the other is the same thing. XP potions are just another way to access...

In a sub required game, people who don't have jobs and can play 24/7 have an advantage over those who can only play a couple hours a day because of life and family. What would you call that? No Life 2 Win? I just don't care about xp boosters. If those bother you then you won't be playing many...

They'll probably use the Planetside 2 F2P model, with modifications for a fantasy "sandbox" mmo. I'm not too concerned about it. SoE has proven with PS2 and DCUO that they can make good games (and profits) using the F2P model as long as the game is is built for it. It's only their old sub games...

GW2 isn't P2W and they are doing so well with their cash shop and the B2P model that they don't see a need for an expansion. They intend to release an expansion worth of content free and have already pushed out a ton of new content already. They release new content every month. P2W is not...

    Guild Wars 2

Well that's true of many dungeons in other mmos with LFD tools. Usually someone explains the basics if a player speaks up that it is their first time though. Or they carry him until he figures it out on his own, or the group drops. It's instanced dungeons, there are only so many ways to...

    Guild Wars 2

I prefer ooc for games like old style EQ. But for instanced McDungeon games like GW2 give me a LFD tool like Rift's (I assume WoW's is the same). I don't give a fuck who I'm playing with if it's not a guild group, I'm not going to talk to them and the dungeons are easy. Any warm body will do...

    Guild Wars 2

Not every mmo needs or should have a LFD tool, but for GW2's type of instanced dungeon design it's a no brainer. It was a huge mistake on their part not to have it at launch.

I agree, but if the world is seamless then leashing becomes inevitable. It really depends on how the world is set up. And as Mr Creed brought up it is better if mobs leash according to their nature. If a lioness is chasing you then it would only do so long enough to get you away from her...

What I miss most about EQ and hope to see in EQN is distinct classes and some of their abilities. I played a SK, I loved FD (not EQ2's crap version), pet pulling, fear kiting, etc. I didn't play an enchanter but was always amazed by the good ones in the early days. Bards doing their amazing...

Didn't play WoW long enough to experience that. The idea isn't to make it a dance game, just to bring enough unexpected "oh shit" situations to each fight to keep dps meter watchers focused on the actual fight and not their hotbar rotation. @Draegan.. yeah, I like those ideas.
  33. Grim1

    EQ Never

I've thought about that. Specifically how to eliminate dps meters. Most people like to dps but having your whole gaming experience tied to a fucking meter and a FOTM macro is pathetic. One way to eliminate the dps meter bull is to just add more unpredictable reactive situations to fights...

Yep. I'm not against having every role available to people but it should take a serious effort to access them. Rift's way doesn't work for me and just increasing the cost of respecs is not the answer. Roles should be well defined and semi permanent, switching can be possible but not encouraged...

    Camelot Unchained MMO

No doubt he could have done it with less. But Curt's business plan was for a AAA title. And back then everyone was spending buku bucks on new mmos and kept increasing the amount until SWTOR imploded. Bubble mmo funding mechanics. My point was if he had gotten the cash then he would have...

I think his point was that a good necro could help in a group when an enchanter wasn't avail. Which was true of many of EQ's classes early on. Skill really mattered in non traditional group set ups. Playing a SK made me very aware of that fact.

    Camelot Unchained MMO

You could be right. And if that happens it will largely be because of the lack of funding imo. The kickstarter money is nice but not nearly enough. They don't need 38 Studios boatloads of cash but 5 mill ain't gonna cut it. So Mark will have to get that extra from somewhere. 38 Studios died...

In many ways WoW was more of a social phenomenon, like Facebook or Twitter. It was the place for a certain group of people to gather and hang out. Everyone was doing it so everyone did.
