Best practices - synchronize database with external source?

Ah. I had it set up that way so you could do more efficient batch inserts/updates/deletes, but that works too.

Best practices - synchronize database with external source?

Something like this should work well enough if you aren't dealing with a lot of data: HashMap<key, name> current - store all keys currently in the database HashMap<key, name> updates - track updates HashMap<key, name> newEntries - track new entries

Do you have any specific examples from countries that are similar to the US (prison conditions/philosophy, social conditions, religious views, etc)? Maybe before/after stats for US states that abolished it? I'm looking for info on that right now... *edit* Most of the articles I found...

The main problem is that I completely avoid metro as soon as I turn on my PC. The Microsoft Store might as well not exist if it can't run on the desktop. I haven't looked at it since the day I installed W8.

If the state hands it out, it can be a deterrent. A lot of people are more afraid of death than spending life in prison.

Excellent job ignoring the point of my post. I think it would be a shame that some random inmate had to do the job that the state should've done in the first place. The "death penalty" in that case would be meaningless because the state didn't do it.

Is it justice for a man to only serve 20-30 years of his 200 year sentence before dying of old age in jail? Why not just call it a 30 year sentence at that point? Does that seem like a reasonable punishment for stealing a collective 30 years from those girls and raping/beating them throughout it?

It just seems weird to me that a person can describe a crime like this by each component - Gavinrad said that the death penalty is only merited when one of the individual crimes is a capital offense, which is probably in line with the law. I understand that each crime has a specific...

    Vikings

I was surprised to find out that it was the last episode of the season. I expected something more substantial. There are certainly some flaws in the show, but I enjoyed it. I'll be watching the next season.

    The E-cig Thread

I think e-cigs are a good thing for people who are trying to quit (I know a few people who are using them for that purpose) - I just don't think they suddenly make "smoking" in enclosed areas acceptable. Some of them produce a very small amount of vapor, but the guy on the train was blowing out...

    The E-cig Thread

While they are obviously better than regular cigarettes, e-cigarettes are still annoying. Some asshole was using one on the train next to me today and kept blowing huge clouds of vapor on everyone. They still have a smell and I don't want to breathe in whatever shit they put in there. I hope...

    Fuck Comcast

People shouldn't have to call in. When Comcast realized that there was a problem, they should have immediately figured out who was being charged erroneously and fixed it. Relying on customers noticing the problem and taking the time to call in is shitty service and a great example of why people...

    Service Providers (Internet, TV, Etc)

12/4 on Comcast is $65/month here. I'm in suburban Chicago, so it's not like I'm out in farm country and it'd cost a lot for them to improve service. AT&T might as well not exist since their service is so shitty, so Comcast has no reason to provide better services or prices. At one point a few...

Oblivion - Tom Cruise goes WALL-E

I'm usually pretty good about turning my brain off for sci-fi/action movies, but for some reason the part where Tom flies into a thunderstorm and dodges the lightning bolt by taking a hard right when he sees it coming bugged the shit out of me. The movie was entertaining enough, but nothing...

    Computer Issues

You can grow/shrink partitions, so you can shrink your storage one and grow the OS. If you don't feel like doing that, you can always just install stuff on the storage partition. The software (probably) won't work if you reformat the OS drive, but all you have to do is delete the installation...

The Big Bad Console Thread - Sway your Station with an Xboner !

The 360/PS3 had hardware that was comparable to a decent gaming PC when they came out as well. It didn't take long for PCs to blow them away again, but that was expected. When the next generation of consoles comes out, they'll capitalize on all the progress made in the PC world again, and the...

Boston Marathon Explosion - Today's Topics: Public Schools

As a general rule, one guy makes vests for lots of suicide bombers. The vest maker doesn't kill himself. Over here it's not as practical to have a central vest maker, so they make and detonate the bombs themselves. They can choose to kill themselves if they want to, but it's not required or...

I don't know. It never makes sense when you hear the reasons people give for people doing shit like this. I'm just trying to think of the most common way that it comes about. A random killing spree just for the hell of it doesn't make sense based on the little bit of info that's out there on...

Boston Marathon Explosion - Today's Topics: Public Schools

The first guy who died has an African name and one of the "we miss you, Sunil" videos had a shot of his sister offering him a Zanzibar (Tanzania) soccer jersey because apparently he really liked that team. Tanzania is ~40% Muslim, so his good friend could've converted him.

Boston Marathon Explosion - Today's Topics: Public Schools

I think this is one of the few situations where the cops would prefer to take a cop killer alive. It's safer for their city that way. It's really important that they learn everything they can about these two guys.

People still want the nice HD video and commentary though. They'll be around with cameras and pundits, but the actual news will be dead (if it isn't already). Has anyone found a more stable police scanner stream? This one seems to be having a lot of issues.

Boston Marathon Explosion - Today's Topics: Public Schools

That guy looks pretty white. Was he just an unfortunate person in the area or was he arrested? They are saying they don't have a second suspect in custody, and the first suspect was supposedly on his way to the hospital when that news footage was taken. Agreed. Just thought it was an...
