Boston Marathon Explosion - Today's Topics: Public Schools

Sounds like 1 suspect is in custody and another is down but not in custody yet. They are checking out a possible bomb at the site though (robot etc is coming). *edit* you beat me to it Also, it's weird to hear chatter about random other things happening in Boston while this is underway.

I caught him saying that while checking the TV for a broadcast about it, but didn't hear his full statement. Was that a suspect description?

Yeah, the suspect is a black male who shot a cop and stole his gun before running away.

Fertilizer plant explodes in West, Texas

There are two smaller silos just north (left, from the camera's perspective) of the main one. It'd be nice if the gif was slowed down a bit more. I'd do it myself, but I don't have the Adobe suite anymore.

Fertilizer plant explodes in West, Texas

It was bad enough that it will share the spotlight for a while, but big accidents don't have the same staying power in the news as terrorist attacks. Nobody has to worry about that plant blowing them up when they are going to work tomorrow.

Looks closer to 200 yards. Most people would probably assume they were safe at that distance.

Fertilizer plant explodes in West, Texas

That's pretty crazy. There were a bunch of houses in range as well as the nursing home that someone mentioned. Here's where the guy seems to be. The yellow dot is the truck's location (school parking lot), and the red dot is the explosion site: ...and here's an overlay to show parts of...

Boston Marathon Explosion - Today's Topics: Public Schools

Nah, healthy living trees are much tougher than legs. Small trees like that would flex with the blast and the shrapnel would just make small gouges in it.

Boston Marathon Explosion - Today's Topics: Public Schools

I really wish I could find the picture I saw earlier. It was not long after the blast (people were still cowering in the doorway) and you could see everything very clearly.

Boston Marathon Explosion - Today's Topics: Public Schools

The second explosion wasn't as big as the first, and the explosions themselves weren't that powerful. The picture isn't detailed enough to see if there are dents in the mailbox or small gouges in the tree. With something like a pressure cooker as a vessel, I'd imagine the first point of failure...

If you read the article he linked to, it states that there is no sign of the bag in the second photo. They have a copy without the blur, so you basically just have to believe them. It also mentions that the second picture was taken a long time after the first, so the bag might have been moved...

The Big Bad Console Thread - Sway your Station with an Xboner !

Pretty much this. I sat out for the 360/PS3 generation, but I am planning on buying a console this time around. It won't be the Xbox if the always-online thing stands. I don't buy PC games that require a constant internet connection (barring games where it's necessary like MMOs), and I sure...

40 second skip protection was amazing. Mine was only 20 seconds - not quite enough to never skip, but it was pretty rare. I remember the rich kid at my lunch table showing off his MiniDisc player all the time. Even when it was the "best", it wasn't very impressive.

    LOTTERY WINNER...what if ?

I've spent a dollar on much worse things than the lottery, so I don't mind buying a ticket when the jackpot gets up to 200m+. It's worth it for the entertainment value of discussing what you'd do with your winnings. Also, more in line with the thread: The main thing I'd want to do is travel.

If you know where they are, you can usually soften them up with a grenade/rocket. The other option is to use the explosives to create a new entrance where your guys aren't at a height disadvantage.

    Tablets

Thanks for all the responses. For those who chose the Kindle: The one issue I noticed with the Kindle was the lack of a good way to go back/home. Sometimes there's a little icon on the side, sometimes there's a bar, and sometimes we just had to tap the middle of the screen to bring up menus...

My grandma is going to start chemotherapy soon, so we decided to get her a tablet to pass the time. My sister's dog on Christmas. I'm not sure if he's sad because of the sweater or all the wrapping paper laying around (he's afraid of everything). I would've reshot this if I noticed that I chopped off part of his paw, but it's too late now. It might've been a good idea to set it up so the...

For the macro shots, I sat down on the ground next to some flowers/bushes with a cheap 70-200mm non-macro lens and manually focused on the bugs when they landed near me (it's impossible to autofocus on the right spot when the bugs are moving around and the DOF is so shallow). I really like...

Sorry about that - I took your comment in the original post as "none of these are significant" rather than "the random bokeh ones aren't significant". I think the way you processed the picture was fine - I like a little more contrast, but that's just a personal preference. As for the...

The B&Ws could use a bit more contrast. The fact that the composition is so bad makes the lack of contrast seem worse than it might have otherwise been though. Put up a B&W with content that you like and it'll be easier to judge.

Final Fantasy XIV (Guide in first post)

In addition to the general pace of the combat, there are a few things worth pointing out about the first battle in the quest/combat video: - The player was level 15 and fighting level 8 creatures - It took about 1 minute to kill them - Her spells were interrupted kind of a lot - She used 1/2...

Need help overcoming a weird obsession

Merely coping with these powerful feelings is not the answer. It's obvious that there's something to them - you need real answers. It's weird that Evelys didn't realize that hosting the forums basically guaranteed his outing, but I don't really care that much.
