Christoper Lee sounded cool, too. Other than that, I'm hard pressed to find anything else. The betrayal system was a neat idea, but like so many things in EQ2 implemented terribly. Whoever designed their combat system should be drubbed out of the MMO industry. Sadly, he's probably one of the...

That pretty much covers it. If they had simply dropped EQ2s idiotic combat system and placed EQs on top the game immediately would have been a fuckton better. The overall design and heroic opportunity system remains terrible. There were a lot of other small problems and the game definitely...

I think LOTRO, SWTOR, and Warhammer Online have all proven that having a rich and killer lore background does not equate to a very good game. Warhammer Online especially pisses me off as all they had to do is make the game dark and gothic from the perspective of Gotrek and Felix and it'd have...

I'm interested in it, but I figured I'd let it cook for a while. I played both AO and AOC at release and had major issues with both games. AOC particularly pissed me off because of the vaporware siege game setup. Supertouch, The biggest difference between EQ and WOW from my memory was the...

I don't think UIs, limitations, or having a big enough world to run around in are problems with most modern MMOs. The problem is they all use the historic design based on levels, treadmills and mudflation. I could be wrong but a lot of people think that what we're missing is making that...

I don't think you can have your cake and eat it to with this design and still attract the normals. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't see it. Unless this has some hook and isn't just derivative of EQ then in my opinion it will not sell. I'm not Itzena, here to defend WOW. I'm playing Vanguard which...

What you call good players are often times min/maxer types who have the time/resources to spend 25 hours a week and an additional 25 creating spreadsheets or studying how to play their class or how to beat said encounter. This is no different really in single player games or MMOs. In my opinion...

The reoccurring theme we hear is this company was Curt's baby. This was his passion. He did not want to give up big stakes or control of the company. I think he actually made a mistake by not running the company himself and in hiring the CEO and execs they had. I'm curious if the CEO, the girl...

    Camelot Unchained MMO

What DAOC did well is cater to alts and have a very good roleplaying environment. That said their dungeons were by and large garbage. Heck, their 40+ dungeons weren't even itemized when I leveled through the first time. I played DAOC from day one. I spent a few weeks leveling my Champion to...

    Camelot Unchained MMO

GW2 and DAOC leveling actually were somewhat of a wash. There were loopholes to level fast in both, but it's not a large difference with those. DAOC was a small grind to level but it was nothing like Everquest. The majority of the game for me was based around the RvR, as well as for the vast...

    Camelot Unchained MMO

Someone rightly mentioned what was missing from modern MMOs is the group vs group small teams combat we saw in DAOC. I'd add in the stealther wars was fun, too, although I'm not a fan of total invisibility and prefer GW2s stealth mechanics far better. Outside of Frontiers, the best part of...

Interesting: It's really a shame a studio didn't pick up this game and give Chris Roberts control if development. I have no faith in kickstarter or crowdsourcing, so I have no real hope this will actually be polished and decent.

Same. Although with the wealth of fantasy material, why the fuck does Camelot need to be reused? I disagree completely, and my reasoning is he is creating a niche game targeted at a specific audience, not aiming for a bazillion subs. If his game requires 50k subs for a year to be successful and...

Vanguard - I don't give a fuck if it's dead, It's still brown as fuck (Download link in 1st post)

It's definitely rough and not casual friendly, but my experience is the complete opposite. I've run two dungeons and done the Isle twice, once just rushing through, and a second time concentrating on crafting and diplomacy in the last week. People are fairly friendly and groups are not too tough...

    Camelot Unchained MMO

I don't like kickstarter, but I'll keep an eye on this as DAOC was one of the better designed MMOs, even if it was released half baked. I'll give him a mulligan on WAR as it had quite a few EA idiots involved. I thought Jacobs was busy making IOS games, though?

I have no problem with first or third. Honestly, I prefer third person more than over the shoulder. In my opinion first person is far better for immersion. That said, it sucks when someone behind you is beating the shit out of you. Find a way to overcome that limitation and remove the...

I agree with most of your points, and they sound very close to my personal next gen MMO design goals that I've repeated in this thread multiple times of player driven content via personally owned areas reinforced by central game quests with more skill and social based content and a minimal need...

This goes back to designing a game based on a vision, and not appealing to the widest demographic of MMO gamer possible. In my game I'd personally get rid of most of the level process.. and alts.. and static zones of level X to Y. I'd make character progression skill based and everything...

Definitely. Rift over compacted the class structure to the point where they are meaningless and lack real distinction. Then they took the DAOC approach to balance instead of worrying more about fun. On top of that, their soul talents and abilities were boring as fuck and designed by a bean...

People run back to WOW because it's familiar, streamlined, and social. Demented and sad, yes, but social. The WOW of today has enough hooks for older MMOers, but is tuned for casuals and console people. The problem is most other MMOs try to target that exact same demographic missing the simple...

Guilty as charged, sadly, but my overriding point isn't that all fantasy is derived from AD&D, or that EQ didn't jack code from Sojourn, just like Sojourn jacked it's code from many other MUDs. My point is the jump from text MUD to 3D MMO was a huge progression. We have not made the next jump...

Are you really comparing a text mud with a 3D online world set in two completely different worlds? You could equally argue Sojourn was a waste of time as it was a cheap knock off of pen and paper gaming in the Forgotten Realms, and missing half of the Monster Manual and better parts of the...

I'm a good 10 years older than you. I was on Doors and BBS' in the early 80s. I actually wrote a Phaze MUD in the 80s when I was in high school. I respect the fact you are tired of WOW derivative games and Isle of Dawn definitely ripped off WOW. However, I'm curious what exactly do you want in an MMO? I have many issues with Vanguard, but I'm playing it because it has a ton of new, fresh open world dungeons I'm hoping to go play...

Your paragraphs really do not give justice to what EQ accomplished. They also sort of contradict each other. EQ blew away most of us who were long time gamers, as well as young new gamers. It was a huge leap forward in graphics, gameplay, and in the world. It's really like comparing silent...

To me EQ had less freedom in that you did not have the variety of options one has in todays MMOs, including modern Everquest. Quest hubs and sandbox are not mutually exclusive. People did not quest in EQ because the quests were worthless and the risk/reward was shoddy. They still had them...

How are are drops/items handled higher up? Is that handled similarly to EQ? Are there named spawns? I am playing this to try and mostly group and do dungeons, but I do like to be able to solo. It is nice as it has a huge EQ vibe, but it has a better design. The player base is a breath of...

I concur, outside of the fact I'm still waiting for Half Life Episode 3.... I don't quite get the Rift hate. I don't care for it, but it's a solid MMO with a lot going for it. If the world and classes weren't so bland, I'd probably play more Rift and to me it's a better MMO than WOW...

The game is nothing like the original launch. The biggest issue I had was stuttering on my i5/6970 rig and I mostly got rid of that by turning off Shadows. The game is fun, and the F2P model is actually decent which is surprising coming from SOE. I'm probably going to level a Shaman next.

Thanks for the info. My Warrior is sweating through killing solo and duo pairs of 2 dots.. Next to me is a Disciple mowing through things at 4 times my speed, and a Psionicist going even faster. Does this trend of Warrior solo suckiness continue? Is the rogue any better? What classes are...

You hit the nail on the head. SWTOR the MMO irks me to no end and is extremely limited and short sighted. However, SWTOR the single player experience is one where I can log in to the game occasionally and level through all six storylines at no extra cost and thisworks for me. Currently, I...

I agree this design is lacking, but like Democracy it is the best we have currently for most players. Well, now what?

I think as has been noted here, the genre needs some new blood. It seems we have so much recycling of game designers and project managers that we aren't moving the MMO genre forward enough. Even games that have some innovation still use most of the same design of previous games.
