    Planetside 2

As a dirty casual, I'm having a tough time hopping in and being productive without just 'digging in' which I really don't like doing. I'm not sure if I'm missing something here....

Just as a counter point, DAOC probably had more hardcore ex-EQ PVE players then they did PVP ones. If you make the PVP content accessible by your normals with a minimal of griefing, and part of the overall PVE world then you can kill two birds with one stone. I have yet to see a fantasy MMO...

    SWTOR

I agree they had great promise, but it sounds like you got your moneys worth from SWTOR, right? I feel I did, even though I currently choose not to subscribe. Just out of curiosity do you feel the same way about WOW, also? I imagine you've spent a ton more on it, and it still requires the 15/mo...

I agree completely with your point, Vonador, but, er Nagafan was in EQ.

    SWTOR

This is straight from the Sony freemium extortion playbook. Guild Wars 2 was built from the ground up to be a free to play game, though. GW2 charges you to increase your bank and bag space, too btw. I think they very grudgingly went to the F2P model and have embraced it in a limited fashion as...

Maybe. I think EQ would be much easier if one started as an Iksar Shaman almost two years after release versus a Human rogue, with no SOW, regen, or newer Ro items. Shaman were beasts. I agree the game wasn't difficult due to mechanics, but tougher due to the need for caution and attention to...

    SWTOR

Creed, it seems so in this thread and that surprises me. Is the game really that bad, though? Terrible to me would be Shadowbane on release. I think SWTOR is disappointing, but I felt I got my money's worth out of the game. There are problems, but what game doesn't have them? Rift bored the...

D2 came out a good while after EQ was released. When exactly did you start playing? Which MMOs were harder than early EQ in your opinion? The reason EQ was more difficult wasn't killing solo orcs in North Ro, it was the fact there was very little hand holding. It sounds like when you started...

    EQ Never

This is nonsense, unless you started playing EQ in 2005 or your memory of levels was your friend twinking and powering you to 50. I'd love an average of the amount of times people died in EQ 1-20 in the first few expansions with their first character, compared to how many they died period in...

    SWTOR

I'm not quite following you here. Are you complaining that you actually have to do the level process to follow the storylines for each class? Even with the slower process via F2P I'm still going very quickly through levels when I play, which I admit is very infrequently. My viewpoints about...

Your list essentially points right at Vanguard, you know. I'd rather have a game that went completely away from traditional EQ design myself, and I'm more interested in fresh dynamic content delivery and non repetitive gameplay then I am about rebuilding a Mcquaid-like vision of a game.

Very good write up and I agree with most of your points, Grim1. I think changing progression from vertical to horizontal is really the thing I am waiting for in a new MMO. What you are proposing is very much like EVE in a fantasy setting with a bit more focused design to allow for the normals...

Hey, it's not like I accused you of being Tuco or anything... I think SWTOR and GW2 both are very good. WOW never looked that good to me, but the animations went very well with the game. I liked EQ2's graphics much better than it. When do we get to the point where game graphics look as...

    Guild Wars 2

I'd guess 1-50 they are fairly similar. I've found range is better for me leveling early on. I tended to swap from Shortbow to P/D dropping Caltrops and circle strafing stuff. This was more efficient for me than Black Powder. Higher level is different as I now use a lot more d/d.

    SWTOR

I wonder how many subs Star Wars Galaxies had over it's lifetime and the ripple effect of NGE. Galaxies was hamstrung by using the timeframe of the movies and trying to actually create a wholly different game. However, it was something new and innovative before Lucasarts pushed to turn it into a...

Open World dungeons with static respawns limit the MMO environment and really do not hold much interest for me. They're great for single player games, but I really hope the days of running dungeons more than once or twice and killing the same mobs over and over are done. This is where I think...

Vanguard - I don't give a fuck if it's dead, It's still brown as fuck (Download link in 1st post)

It's funny, but we had a regular Druid in our steady EQ group from 99-01 and he was the same way, but the times we swapped him out kills took longer and the group just went slower, and we died more frequently due to no spot heals and utility. Plus, ya know, if he wasn't around, who woudl've...

    SWTOR

Same here. I love the fact I can fire up Guild Wars 2, SWTOR, or PS2 and have a few hours fun without a sub. The funny thing is I bought MOP, and after making 90, doing a few raids, and doing a few dailies, I went right back to the other three games SWTOR at max level is still awful. These...

I like the idea of classes having unique abilities. The problem is when those abilities become essential, a la the cleric and enchanter in Everquest. Despite the many problems I have with the game, to this day the classes in EQ to me are *perfect*. I really hope EQ Next goes in a completely...

There's absolutely no reason why current MMO companies should take five years for a new project. A company like SOE already has the tools, databases, QA, and customer service setup. How long did the original DAOC take? That was from Mythic, a very small company and they did quite well with...

    Well, now what?

Except I completely disagree with that premise. Games and TV are a thousand times better than even ten years ago. Even more so than twenty years ago. Software design is based on process. Art is subjective but in my opinion the quality and quantity is far better. I know that I've changed and...

Minimaps and exploring are segregate things. For a great example, I'd refer to Guild Wars 2. A minimap is not changing encounters, revealing traps, or changing underlying things. I like the convenience of it, and it makes the game better for me. Exploring in EQ was for the sights, but after two...

That'd be WOW. EQ was revolutionary due to what it offered at the time. Given the nature of the gaming universe right now, we've evolved. I think people really do not know what they want, but it involves a paradigm shift. I played EQ from day 1, and while there was a lot of fun, some here...

I agree F2P is the last stop for a game built around the sub model. However, a well built non sub MMO actually has far more potential as there are a magnitude higher amount of players who could play the game, and spend the bucks to buy extra content or services. The MMO sub market, especially...

    Well, now what?

That's not the point. The AD&D derived, Diku based game built from a small group of passionate people with a Vision? is far different from the focus group built, soulless drivel being released today. There's a reason SWTOR and WOW don't even use their own fucking game footage in advertising.

In reference to your 401k, do not cash it out, get a loan for your mortgage down payment from your provider. It's both tax deductible and there are usually special offers for that. In my opinion you've answered your own question. There's no plan B if you lose your job, which does not sound...

    2012 NFL Season

In typical fashion, the Cowboys fired the one competent coach on their staff. I say this not being a Ryan family fan. I'm still trying to figure out the Doug Marrone hire at Buffalo. I get the feeling there's some Robert Kraft wormtongue type whispering into Ralph Wilson's ear, or something.

    Wheel of Time series

Since it's been such a long time, I'm actually starting at book 1 and rereading the whole series. I'm 1/4 of the way through Eye of the World and while the characters are all familiar the story feels fresh again to me.

    Well, now what?

Theoretically this is true, but it ignores quest rewards, being directed to new and better areas as one levels, convenience, and most importantly not being at the whim of groupmates unless you are doing the Sam Deathwalker routine. Also, I don't quite get the hate for a top right GPS style...

    Well, now what?

Getting back to this, I have to say that while I agree users 'building' content Dungeon Master style with any sort of elevated privileges is indeed not a great setup, user content as in your users having their own dynamic piece of the pie(i.e. keep, dungeon, castle, lair, etc) that they can...
  36. G

    Well, now what?

I agree you don't want your players building 'worlds', but there's no reason you can't make it modular, as I mentioned. You have your own keep you build with your own NPC guards and traps. Bob the Troll has his own cave where he stores his loot and buys his goblin and orc minions. Groups can...

    Well, now what?

Player generated content is mostly done at a macro level within a 'Dungeon Master' framework now. However, if the content is done via hiring NPCs, PVP, or dynamic group versus group goals then there are a lot more possibilities. It also at the same time adds community to a game, and if done...
  38. G

    Well, now what?

There's no need for FFA PVP. The answer is to create a DAOC style 'Frontiers' area for PVP and world conquest, but keep your entire playerbase and PVE areas open for everyone so there is more content allowed. 'Sides' should be player created, and not an entity of 'A' vs 'B', IMHO. I...

    Well, now what?

I dislike hard coding sides, and I like the direction Rift is going in that you can choose 'factions'. There should not be an invisible wall between ones player base. As far as designs, there needs to be a treadmill or reason to play in an MMO. I like some of what Guildwars 2 is doing, but...
