    Winter 2024 Anime Thread

I just got around to watching the first few of this. First episode I was ok, not too bad, very serious business, wait what the ?! Second episode with the expressions on the military officers in the briefing while Braven talks about his first time with Izami, had me laughing harder than any...

    Dune: Part Two (2023)

Yeah, but the crawlers weren't shielded. Also the fremen are basically terrorist insurgents; trading one guy + laser for a crawler, it's fliers, and the bunch of troops guarding it seems like a win even if they *were* shielded. ( Even assuming the blast is big enough to kill the gunner - they...

    Dune: Part Two (2023)

I thought this was really good, worth it for the visuals alone IMO, but the rest of it wasn't bad. Fremen need to work on their tactics though - if you are going to bury yourself in the sand, at least wait til they get to you, don't jump out of the sand 30 yards away and then run the remaining...

    Star Trek: Discovery

The opposite really - it was actually pretty good storywise up until Fuller left ( most of the way through s1 ), after that it turns into more or less meandering nonsense. Kind of like Heroes, and for pretty much the same reason ;p

    Constellation

This is a weird show. I don't know that I'd count it as a 'mystery box' though, it seems to make it pretty clear what's going on.

    Legends of Idleon

Sneaking is kind of like Home Alone, but you are playing as the burglars. Your ninja twins learned everything they know about stealth from the kool-aid man.

He also has clearly fallen into the trap of not spending points on int - 'No, I can't take this money I need to remain low profile and secretive', *uses blindingly flashy loot box in public park then sits there staring at his loot for a while. Goes and opens portal to hell in a residential street*

I know nothing about the author's views on anything, but the character Maya is a literal social justice warrior - and she is also fucking crazy. Not even in story characters take her seriously.

    Mr. & Mrs. Smith

This was 90% boring relationship drama. Not my thing I think.

Solo Leveling is good fun, but I can't help but lol at the thought of the logistics involved in dragging a multi-thousand ton block of granite into the gym every morning so the company head can 'warm up' ;p

Baldur's Gate 3 by Larian Games

That one is also true, but a bit more edge case. AFAIK for spells that two different classes both get ( e.g. both wizards and sorcerers get fireball ), if you have both wizard and sorcerer levels, it will use whichever the most recent one you raised is to decide if the fireball uses int or cha...

Some other stuff I have checked out over recent months - all of them have at least 1 'book' completed which makes a decent stopping point : Elydes - this is an isekai/litrpg, although it is quite different from the usual fare there. It's pretty laid back, for example the number of enemies...

    Stormgate (RTS)

The art design killed Blizzard ? That's... certainly a novel opinion. What's your line of thinking there ? It's been pretty consistent through their best and worst periods, as far as I know.

    What are you playing?

I've been alternating between Cosmoteer and Trouble Shooter. Cosmoteer is like a cross between factorio and starsector. It's nominally a space combat game, kill pirates, mine stuff, upgrade your ship etc; but the bulk of the game is really in ship design, which is the factorio part. You build...

Baldur's Gate 3 by Larian Games

The order for classes is mostly because some things you only get from your first class, mostly armor proficiency and saving throws. So if you start as a wizard and switch to warrior, you won't get heavy armor, but if you go the other way around you will.

Mmmm, first ep of this more or less left me indifferent. We'll see if it picks up in the next couple of episodes. I am confused by all the whining about lesbians though - the only one is Foster's daughter, no ?

    The Boys

What the shit ? I've seen worse plastic surgery results, but not coming from a better starting place. Getting from a 5 to a 7 is a believable goal for plastic surgery, getting from a 9 to something higher isn't going to happen ( has it ever ? ).

    Monarch: Legacy of Monsters

My suggestion for the "Snyder Cut" of this show - first 5 minutes of first episode, second last 5 minutes of last episode. Done.

    For All Mankind

The season started so well too, pity about the rest of it. Pet peeve - Aleda typed like 500 lines of code in 3 minutes, instead of obvious sabotage, a simple typo would stop the thing from working, and would be 100% explainable as an accident. If it failed to compile there wasn't enough time...

You could try the minimum subtlety version of thieving - disguise your guys, turn on non-lethal combat, beat him unconscious and then take all his stuff while he is out cold.

Solo Levelling - eh, it was ok, but pretty formulaic. will watch a few more to see if it picks up. Delicious in Dungeon - WTF ? Well, can't complain about it being unoriginal I guess - was entertaining despite the crazy. Chained Soldier - aka "Cuck: the anime". This is a no unless I get really...

Wrath of the Righteous and D:OS2 being better than BG2 is pretty non controversial I'd think - Underrail is a bold call though.

    Aquaman 2

Yeah, it's pretty much goofy nonsense. It's not offensively stupid, to me anyway, but nothing about it makes any sense. I have trouble believing that at no point someone pointed out that having an undead lich king burning totally-not-uranium in a literal furnace to cause global warming because...

    What If...?

Yeah ep1 was pretty entertaining if kind of dumb ( usb ports ? reaaaaly ? ), I got cinemasins flashbacks while watching - 'She survives this. *DING*, This plan works. *DING* ;p ep2 was just kind of ehhh. Sometimes seasoned actors can pull off ridiculously stupid lines, but this was not one of...

    For All Mankind

The Helios peasants storyline never made sense from the very start, their salaries should be completely insignificant compared to the cost of getting them and the supplies they are going to eat to Mars in the first place. Are you going to spend 20 million sending some under-qualified desperate...

    LitRPG

Piers Anthony is legitimately creepy as fuck though - just look at the lengthy instructions on how to fuck underage girls he included in Bio of a Space Tyrant for example. That tends to get a lot of hatred even to his relatively tame books like the Xanth series.

    Reacher

Aww, I was looking forward to the scene where they try to recreate multiple raid arrays out of a bag of unmarked harddrives and then manage to decrypt them somehow, then find they've stolen 800 terrabytes of log files and spend the next 10 years trying to find anything incriminating in them 8)...

    Beacon 23

No. After an interesting start, the rest of the season meandered around going nowhere then ended on a pointless cliffhanger which will never be resolved when it is inevitably cancelled. The two leads have almost negative chemistry. Aster sacrificing anything at all for the guy was literally...

    LitRPG

It's an interesting line of thinking though - I wouldn't have thought of Ender's game as a litrpg, if for no other reason than it pre-dates the genre by 30 years or more, but with how sprawling litrpg has become you could make an argument for it. The amount of number-go-up isn't really all that...

    Reacher

After the first 3 episodes, I like this better than s1, and I thought S1 was pretty good. The extended team work play off each other really well, action is good and story is interesting. Occasionally lols too, Robert Patrick's reaction to the Terminator joke was great.

    Starfield - Fallout fallout that isn't ES6

Never played it, but looks interesting, may check it out when I have some free time. At a tenth the cost of starfield, it would have to be reaaaaaly bad to be a tenth as good as starfield ;p

Bold choice on the high ranking for Shadow over Mystara, but I respect that - only very technically an rpg, it was still a hell of a lot of fun.

    Doctor Who

Moffat is like the canonical example of the Peter Principle - he was a fantastic writer, but then he got promoted into positions he was increasingly worse at until he ended up with a job he was really bad at.

    LitRPG

Dude does a lot of things well, but he writes female characters like the only exposure he's had to real women is watching anime. It's not like he doesn't know that though, so it doesn't detract from the story much.
  37. V

    Doctor Who

That.. wasn't too bad by Dr Who standards really. "You get a happy ending ! You get a happy ending ! Everyone gets a happy ending !" is a bit disconcerting when applied to existing storylines with bittersweet endings. It's like the writers are pissing on other people's stories to mark their...

    Monarch: Legacy of Monsters

Nah, they were actually pretty much that dumb ;p Fair point that the show's version was lacking a lot of 'OOOOH FUCK RUN RUN RUN' that probably happened in the real one.

    Will Wight

Eh, it was still an alright book despite the tonal and structural problems IMO. 'It was nowhere near as good as Cradle' is a position that I doubt anyone would argue with though.
