    Pan'Theon: Rise' of th'e Fal'Len - #1 Thread in MMO

My philosophy on Pantheon is 'maybe one day there will be an mmo worth playing again.' Soon would be great, but they have a wide lane and nothing comparable coming out. I don't want them to mess it up.

I had a lot of fun playing EQ as a teenager. Went back in my 20s and played it again, still found it to be the best mmo I had played and it had little to do with "nostalgia" that everyone carries on about. Everything I earned in the game meant more, was more cooperative, which made everything...

    Pan'Theon: Rise' of th'e Fal'Len - #1 Thread in MMO

The challenge of EQ raiding was not rigid mechanics like mmos today. It generally wasn't as challenging when it came to the fight itself. The struggle was getting a full raid of competent players leveled up, geared up and online while content was available. EQ was open world, so nothing was...

AI or machine learning is totally unnecessary for most to enjoy an mmo. Just having mobs that are programmed to somewhat intelligently, somewhat creatively use their abilities to harm and heal requiring the player to pay attention and respond is a proven formula. Creating a half a dozen...

For most players, all the information they needed was there. Early EQ strategies were basically complete heal your tank and maybe have X resist or stand in a certain spot. Most raid info was available, and virtually anything you wanted to know about group or quest content which is all most...

I guess they can wait until beta to develop major parts of the game, but that isn't usually how it works. Generally, you don't go to beta until the content and features you intend to launch with are in place to be fixed and optimized.

If Smedley was still there, I'd believe the battle royale thing because he was always trying to capitalize on the latest trend, even to the detriment of the game. Don't believe they have money to continue development on EQ3, nor do I believe any other sane person would attempt to convert EQ into...

The challenge of EQ was not about knowing how to do something, but in the doing. The information has always been available for the 99.9% who aren't on the top of the curve.

There's nothing to say that they have to reveal everything to test 99% of the mechanics and systems. Besides, what is far worse than a game with information that is largely known is a game the is largely broken. The idea that in a year most of the worst bugs won't be revealed, is far-fetched...

I'm pretty sure I remember them saying, on multiple occasions, that they want at least a year of beta. Based on what we've seen, beta is still a long way off. They have 7 of 12 classes, and those are only partially complete (skills up to maybe the 30s). They're still working on the first racial...

DAoC would have definitely been more interesting if you progressed your character in contested content. They had the right idea with Darkness Falls, but for some reason stopped there. This was the main reason why I found EQ pvp so much more fun than DAoC. I actually got to kill people and take...

I personally don't care that much for the arrows next to group members. MMO should rely on communication over HUD when possible. The only way those should exist is in a very short range to overcome normal visual/audio limitations of a video game world.

    Pan'Theon: Rise' of th'e Fal'Len - #1 Thread in MMO

There is a big difference between good classes and good combat. I found the combat awful on all the 3 classes I played, but I loved all 3 classes and their abilities. Having to use 30 abilities simultaneously plus clickies should have never been a thing. Limited strategic combat creates a better...

Most who would pledged have done so already. Unless they could convince people that a decent kickstarter would seriously expedite the launch, I do not think it would succeed.

If EQ had 70 zones and Pantheon was a similar size, it would have about 20-25. Whether they split off areas like the arena or dungeons from the overworld, a bit more, but that first zone they've been showing off lately would house qeynos, sewers, qeynos hills, surefall and probably a chunk of...

I disagree. The gameplay itself in EQ was addictive. That it was a shared experience was great, yes, but the slower strategic combat and high risk vs reward item progression made it a every addictive experience aside from the social aspect.

So what you're saying is things haven't improved? When you can't even concede the obvious, it makes you look irrational, not me. This is one of the most popular pantheon threads on the internet, so it's the only reason I post on this forum.

Things have improved with every stream. As long as they don't stop improving, it's safe to expect it to look pretty good by launch. Combat animations are looking solid. Running/walking does look stiff, especially when transitioning to strafing or combat.

Still think a system where items age and eventually become no trade would be awesome for economy. It doesn't have to be a fast process, but without something like that in place, you eventually end up with 40,000 fungi tunics on a server of 1500 people. That also leads to old content becoming...

If done right, they can work together, and have worked together in other games. This just requires more thought and balancing, but really wouldn't be that hard if you just came up with a system (dropped variants of items have X stats, crafted variants have Y stats or X+Y if very rare). Even in...

If an mmo is actually creating a virtual world, there will be parts the appeal to some, but not to others. As long as crafters enjoy crafting, it will be mission accomplished.

What I suggested would make crafting anything but useless. It just means that the best crafted items require dropped components, or alternatively certain items (slots?) can only be filled by crafted items. Then of course things like consumables or other augments that can be added to equipment...

I did like the fact that crafted goods were useful in EQ2. What I did not like is that a solo player could run around and collect the materials and create something that rivaled dropped equipment. It wasn't a big deal for consumables, but when it comes to weapons and armor, the best items should...

Nope, I didn't go back. Yes, some of these observations are surely anecdotal, but I do follow the stats. There was an influx with Black Desert following the steam launch, for instance, but that tapered back off as well. As such, numbers like 1.8 million total users on a game that runs sales for...

Feels data my ass. Just because people still play games, doesn't mean they're doing great. Still, new mmos are suffering from player exodus as well. The premise of these games is elaborate and persistent worlds for players to inhabit, yet they're lasting a matter of weeks for most. This is a problem when you're dumping years and lots of money into them. Something is amiss, and I...

If you're against instancing, you should still be against the way Agnarr does it. They dumped 3-5 servers worth of people into one when they didn't have to. If they just split it up into a few different servers, you wouldn't need instancing. It would also spread out the hardcores naturally...

That's retarded logic. If no one pledged more than $100, it would slow down development, if not bring it to a screeching halt. People who put in more money do it for love of the idea. Only time will tell whether that trust was misplaced, but claiming we have no idea if it will be something we...
