Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

Oh my god! Now please put this into perspective. When did you start playing EQ? Did you ever play in Blackburrow, Runneye, Unrest, CT, Sol A/B, Guk, Kaesora, Kanor, Sebilis or Chardok? The whole concept of EQ was based on STATIC dungeons with STATIC spawns and groups moving from one STATIC...

I think I know the guy. We actually exchanged a few tells when Raging Fury was first at something and he was monitoring our progress. Must have been during GoD if I remember correctly. Anyways, he seemed to be one of the cool devs, so even though EQ is way over the hill, it"s still a big loss...

This is the reason why EQ had a community while WoW does not. If people have to rely on each other, either to share the content or to deal with antisocial behavior, they will form an alliance of some sort.

I hope you have considered picking up this engine:Project Offset - Main Haven"t followed the development lately, but it made a huge impression on me a while ago. Rumors are, there is a leaked video on youtube

Grats Curt! That was quite an interesting series. I had the impression that the Rockies always came up like 10 inch short on everything. Some balls that got almost hit over the fence, some balls that were just caught and some that just dropped out of reach combined with a pisspoor performance...

That"s true, but once you find out you should honestly think about making it a feature instead of fixing it. Those EQ bugs turned out to be pretty good for the game after all.

Darkfall is an interesting project and it seems that Vanguard was trying to emulate just that. If you look at the similarities in content, it"s very obvious. Now the fact that Vanguard wasn"t successful with it doesn"t mean much, it failed because of the piss-poor implementation of these...

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

The first thing I would do as a company study would be to analyze why Vanguard failed. For this I wouldn"t rely on McQuaid"s own analysis (marketing, hardware), because it is designed to make their performance look better than it was.

Why all the nerd rage against Vanguard

Dude, that"s a nice posting, but you have an obvious advantage in information. Point is, there are lots of things going on and the customers do not have this info. They have to take a more or less educated guess and glue pieces of info together. Once you spot an error you come down to earth...

Why all the nerd rage against Vanguard

All I am saying is that it isnotimpossible. There have been cases in the past where people were paid to shut up at shareholder meetings, so sometimes there is a certain interest to keep the bad press to a minimum.

Why all the nerd rage against Vanguard

I mean theoretically speaking banning critics that can potentially endager a multi-million-dollar project isn"t that stupid of a move. If someone spends millions to get good press, doesn"t it make sense to spend a few bucks and press a few buttons to avoid bad press? So overall it"s not...

Why all the nerd rage against Vanguard

The human brain is trained to look for patterns. Some people look at the stars and see a Pegasus. They can even draw lines and make it appear. Still, there is no Pegasus. The pattern is there, but it really is coincidence. I don"t blame Utnayan for drawing the lines, because it fits nicely...

Why all the nerd rage against Vanguard

You can be sure that the reaction on this board blew everything out of proportion. Group dynamics on message boards and especially those all-against-one situations can and will lead to bizzare soap operas every once in a while. Blaming just one side for it is simply wrong.

Why all the nerd rage against Vanguard

Still you seem to have problems to confess that you were wrong with your judgement and the critics were right. If you don"t want to get reminded, why did you bring it up again? Also what do mean with fanatism? Do you call your math teacher a fanatic only because he insists against the...

No, but aparently he was the only person assuming that Brad didn"t change his character. Everyone else obviously expected him to have changed from the Luclin-asshole to Jesus.

Why all the nerd rage against Vanguard

I see that you didn"t get the point. Utnayan made predictions based on his experience in the past with Brad and SoE and based on screenshots and videos. That"s a totally different scenario in comparison to just predicting something out of the blue.

Why all the nerd rage against Vanguard

If people would have switched on their brains instead of listening to Brad"s bullshit, he wouldn"t have been the only one (to be fair, he wasn"t the only one). Unfortunately the majority of people was dead wrong and that was hardly his fault.

Why all the nerd rage against Vanguard

Wasn"t graphics the main point in Brad"s advertisement concept? The problem is that the formular "our game is so slow and needs such high specs, because our graphics are so good" got busted by LOTR. Obviously it is possible to get good graphics running on average PCs after all and we all knew...

I don"t mind boats if they are done nicely. Sailing from BB to FP was ok, except for the bugs of course. What I don"t understand is why wizard/druid teleport got shafted in VG. What was so bad about this concept that it had to be removed? Things like that are absolutely beyond me.

Why all the nerd rage against Vanguard

There is lots of talk about next generation games, but it seems to me that everyone seems to forget about the next generation of players. The players are finally starting to notice that these MMOs are nothing but an endless hunt for upgrades in order to be able to hunt for even better...

Brad, I got a solution for you and because today is Saturday, I"ll make it absolutely free: Introduce a chat channel named "/overland only call" or simply /ooc. It may sound pretty advanced, but in a nutshell it is nothing but a chatchannel that allows people to communicate with each other...

Why all the nerd rage against Vanguard

I don"t get this discussion. There are people who are happy with fancy graphics and there are people who are not. There is no compromise and neither side can prove the other right or wrong. Also this stuff about animations is ridiculous. Some like "em, some don"t. The question is not if the...

I haven"t played Eve, but this sounds interesting. Still I want to point out that there is a difference between "collect x amount of y"-type of quests and a real market where prices move up and down. The big idea in M.U.L.E. was that people had to work together to a certain degree, because if...

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

Dynamic market reminds me of M.U.L.E. on the C-64. Incredibly simple concept, but one of the best games ever. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M.U.L.E. Edit: To take this concept further, how about an MMO where the town vendors are looking for certain raw material in turns. Let"s say this week...

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

I doubt that there is an alternative to it. If you want to make levels easy and fast, then you don"t need levels at all. Reaching max-level has to be an accomplishment that one can be proud of and it requires a certain amount of mindless grind.

From all unfinished expansions, Luclin was the worst. Add to the list: - Sanctus Seru was 80% unpopulated - the storyline Katta vs. Seru was missing - Acrylia B wasn"t finished PoP was better, but unfinished also. PoWar was missing entirely* and I am not even sure if PoTime got released...

I have the feeling that this is all similar to the Olympics and carrying the flame. Brad used to carry it for years, then he stumbled and dropped it, now Curt has picked it up. Let"s see if he can reach the goal.

They do deserve lots of respect for getting the industry to where it is, but they also deserve tons of blame for what happend ever since. I am not sure what outweighs the other. It"s the typical hero/goat thing.

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

Funny, but Curt"s relation to baseball reminds me of something what describes Sigil best. It all started with a walk, then came a throwing error by the second baseman trying to turn the double play followed by a bunt single, because the pitcher fumbled the ball. Now you got bases loaded with...

I don"t fear the NDA going down. Besides that I don"t really know if I should laugh or cry about the fact that Brad, his people and their multi million dollar budget won"t be enough to prevent this disaster in the making. When I want to laugh, I go and read the Beta boards. Maybe this example...

McQuaid also made EQ at one stage of his career. Obviously it doesn"t matter what you have done in the past, if it doesn"t translate into the future. Seems to me that the best times for both of these guys are far behind them and they didn"t learn anything from it, at least their games seem to...
